Haha, the blanket to the head thing! Its the same with me too. :) Its silly, i know, but i got so used to it, it feels uncomfortable sleeping without anything over my head even today. The fear faded, but the habit remained.
In my case, it was caused by Gremlins and the flood of self claimed alien abductee interview documentaries, reconstructed on TV, as they were very popular at the time (early 90's).

Sadly it's not linked to potatoes.
I still jump on my bed rather than walk to it because I'm scared something under the bed will catch my leg.

What kind of Halloween celebration is there in Poland? All the stores probably sell all the halloween crap but that's just capitalism for you, I've never heard about any actual celebrations.

well maybe it's not your thing, that doesn't mean there aren't any Poles who do that. every year some kids do treat-or-tricking in my neighbourhood and I always make sure to have some candy for them. also, carving pumpkins is enjoyable!
I see it as an innocent and fun event and it doesn't interfere with All Saints' Dy at all. of course it isn't OUR native holiday but we definitely need more joyful things in our lives.

interesting. where do you live? Tovstonoh said he saw that happen in Warsaw. I have not live in Warsaw. But I've always lived in a city. Maybe it's more of a suburb thing? Or a country one?
This really is a strange phenomenon for me 'cause as I've said all my life I've never gone trick-or-treating myself. None of my friends did. I have never seen kids walking from door to door begging for candy nor I have had any child knock on my door asking for some! I really thought that barring some "halloween parties" beeing just an excuse for adults to get drunk in costume Poland was "Halloween-free"!
And hearing someone came from abroad and experienced halloween for the first time in Poland makes it even weirder :D

I've seen kids dressing up and asking for candy in multiple cities, including Warsaw, Lodz, Bialystok. I even went myself once and it was fun, some people actually baked special cookies for tricksters :D I've also seen some jack-o-lanterns and other decorations.
I'm personally surprised you didn't have any contact with Halloween celebration in Poland, especially in such a big, lively city like Krakow. it still isn't very popular but like I said, there hasn't been any year lately when someone wouldn't knock on my door on Halloween. :)

Hope you enjoy your Halloween! We don't really celebrate it in Australia either, but we do some dressup and horror movies, so close enough ;-)
