Nooby question about keys/refs?

I'm sorta new on trading on these things, and I know this is a really nooby question about this but I really don't understand. What are these tf2 keys, dota2 keys, and refs everyone wants to trade for?

I tried looking it up on the market but there many types of different keys for tf2/dota2 as well.

Mann Co. Supply Crate Keys, Treasure Keys, and Refined Metal (which isn't marketable, so you won't find it there)

I'm assuming refined metal is from something you do in-game?

Yup. You can craft metal with regular weapons which drop ingame (8-12 drops each week = +-2 reclamed metal = 0,66 refined). 1 key is like 5.77-6 refined metal right now. Price changes quite often though

Keys open crates which might contain very valuable items. Ref = refined metal, which serves as crafting material in TF2 (hats, weapons etc. - some are valuable, some are not). Keys can be bought in ingame store. Both keys and metal serve as currency among traders.
