afaik, more and more people don't even use address bar in their browser, they just type the address in google and then click the first link.
and no I don't mean someone's mom or even grandma, I'm talking of kids 10-17 too.

Was just going to comment the same. Except today the address bar and search bar are kind of the same thing.

That's what we get when kids learn how to Internet from their grandmas and not the other way around.

I use Firefox for just about everything I do on the internet and then I have Chrome installed just to use with SG. So yes, my homepage for Chrome is SG since that is the only reason I open this browser.

Sg-book? That sounds interesting :)

I'm neither a kid nor a grandma, but I totally do that because that's often faster (I'm too prone to typos).

That's like 100 times slower than using autocomplete so you just have to write 1 or couple letters and choose the right one.

I've got a slight suspicion that we are talking about entirely different things. I meant sites that are new to me and my browser; as for steamgifts and such, there are bookmarks or autocomplete for that, sure.

And we were talking about people who do that every time for any site. New sites you usually get linked to from somewhere, it's rarer that you hear about a site's name and then Google what the actual URL is.

Yes, they tell the same story.

I guess this type of community needs a steady influx of new users to maintain its size - and if this influx is reduced then the community will eventually die.

site (and community) is alive and kicking, if you ask me (don't do that).

honest question: what makes you think site is dying? those graphs?

Those graphs, yes.
But also

Though the decrease could be for other reasons.

Why's this community so different from others?

It is not different from other communities. There is a time for everything.

I'm not saying steamgifts is dead. It can still reach a equilibrium.

"this type of community" was the part that got me to ask that mainly.

But yeah, I agree that Steamgifts is past its prime as of now, though new peaks can come still since it's not like the Steam community's tapped out or anything.

But I don't think "this type of community" has much more or less of a chance of losing members. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

This type of community (more accurately: this type of site) has a high chance of losing it's giveaways which in turn will cause a loss of it's members. The community will not die completely since there are users here that like to give games just to give and users that just enjoy talking, but it is not going to see the number of giveaways or users that it has in the past and the odds of winning will continue to drop for the average user. Users involved in groups, whitelist, or invite only giveaways will most likely continue to win a decent amount, although they are usually giving more than the average user as well. These "walled off" parts of the community will probably also hurt the site popularity because they are not public and most users will not be able to enter which does not help encourage new users to get involved.

I don't claim to know a way to fix the issue, but I think it is due to the design of the CV system. I explained in further detail in another thread here.

The rise was when Kickstarter, Greenlight and Early Access were kicking, Steam catalogue was flooded with low quality games, which were given away and sold on many indie bundle shops. In a year or two people started to realize they are getting shit, and began to ask Valve to stop all this, and then Valve changed it's policies towards indie games. Now the very concept of indie game is discredited, it's percepted more like trashware, people don't buy bundles anymore, bundle shops are dying. Do you want another shovelware 2-dollar game made merely to get a share from wallpapers/emoticons transactions? Me neither.

I agree with your first sentence but I don't think it's necessarily that attitudes to indie games have changed. I think it's just that the games that people would rather giveaway than keep are less plentiful since Valve's newer practices like having an assessment period before developers can profit from trading cards.

I don't think the community here will completely die because there are a decent number of users here that like to give games just to give and there are users that just enjoy talking, but yes, the number of giveaways and the chance to win for the average user is going to continue to plummet. Seems the spike in zero value giveaways seems to have caused the decline in giveaways.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't see why that would have much of an effect. I guess new users joining could see the flood of free games and think there is no point in using the site because it's just people giving away free games, but I don't think that is why. It is weird that the number of giveaways created started to drop right around that the time when free games were allowed to be given away in Jan 2018, but if you look at the number of new users joining the site, it has been steadily declining since 2015.

I don't claim to know a way to fix the issue, but I personally think the site is declining in popularity due to the design of the CV system. I explained in further detail in another thread here.

Are you talking about because I said it is because of the CV system? I still don't think it is related to free games, they have no effect on CV. I think it is because people get excited about leveling their account for one reason or another and then when they are happy with a certain CV level, they stop creating giveaways. Now there are more users entering giveaways, but less being created which causes a dramatic drop in odds of winning which discourages user from using the site because they very rarely win anything.

Do you know how to have a conversation? You are just talking in circles without explaining anything. As far as I am aware, I never contradicted myself. If you want to try and explain how I contradicted myself we might get somewhere.

Or the conversation would get somewhere if you explained why you think zero value giveaways could cause a decline in giveaways. Or you could explain why you think free games have an affect on CV.

Damn... I might be responsible for a few entries :) of course, if a combined search is registered here. I do not know if I am a lazy person or super lazy, but if I have an old key and I want to create a GA for it, usually I simply write "insert bundle name; steamgift" and this way I check region restrictions. I know, there are other, wayyyy easier, methods for that, but old habits die hard, especially since Google search bar is sitting right above the bookmark toolbar.
