With todays announcement of Torchlight 3, I thought I'd ask SG, which Torchlight game did you like better?

I liked the second one better. I LOVED my Embermage. Might reinstall and do a Berserker in the mean time.

So, if you played a Torchlight game, which one did you like better?

Which Torchlight did you like better?

Torchlight II

I tried one of the Torchlight games years ago while it had a free weekend, but didn't enjoy it much because we were playing it co-op. I've been meaning to get one of the games and play them, but kept forgetting.
Anyway, long story short, I watched the video linked in the article and it looks good! I also like how it was supposedly meant to be an online game, but they changed it based on the feedback. Always a plus when the devs are listening to their players 👍

Coming to Steam this year apparently, so it'll probably be a new addition to my wishlist. And who knows, maybe I'll actually buy one of the previous games, too.

While Torchlight II is better for almost every aspects, I liked the gem system in the first game more. It was more Diablo-like.
As a Torchlight fan I didn't like Frontiers in pre-alpha and gave the feedback like that. I'm glad they changed it to Torchlight III but still not sure about it. I hope it will be a good successor.

Edit: Developer is not Runic Games, probably won't be the same as previous games. :/

They're both great games, but what sold me on the original was the self-contained narrative and relatively laid back atmosphere. It wasn't dark just for the sake of being dark, it had a simple loop of town -> dungeon -> town, and the fishing and pet interactions had a simplistic charm to them.

Torchlight II lost a bit of that charm in expanding to a more co-op friendly setting; it went from being small in scope to a grander adventure. Large chunks didn't feel like they were balanced for a solo experience, and it gave in a bit more to the requisite darkness all loot-based ARPGs seem to share. The core gameplay was still there, if a little more complex, and it was great being able to have a buddy or two join in. But somehow, in expanding the world, it actually felt like it lost some of its soul.

What I've played of Frontiers didn't have a whole lot of what endeared me to the franchise in the first place, and rebranding it into Torchlight III doesn't mean a whole lot - even if they claim it's being rebalanced for a solo experience, there's only so much they can do if they're aiming to release it during this calendar year. I've got it wishlisted, and if the price isn't outrageous I'll probably pick it up early on. But I'm not expecting it to capture me the way the original games did.

TL1 felt cozy. TL2 feels uprooted and constantly going for the next thing, but never really arriving, always just transient - for me.
For example I loved Grim Dawn's endless town-portal skill that let you sell everything you want easily, but as you're the one moving to town instead of the pet, you get more accustomed to it. That was something that was technically a setback from TL's pet system, yet I loved it :)

and a little edit: TL2 did better I think with skills, also with balancing the game, TL1 was a cakewalk then a boring boss that had a ridiculous health pool.

Hard to pick as I loved both my Destroyer in 1st game and my Engineer in 2nd.

torchlight 0, they were very boring.

ok, torchlight 1 was good, i liked the engineer (? the one with summons). crafting was terrible, i remember using mods to lower the chances to lose everything.

My problem with Torchlight is that it was too much like Diablo. Similarly, Torchlight 2 was too much like Diablo 2. Both are well made, but for someone who spent a lot of time playing Diablo and Diablo 2, the Torchlight series was a bit underwhelming.
