Doom 3 is the scariest game I have played. And it's not even one of these "try hard to be a horror game" types.

Sometimes they are. I got myself Outlast some time ago. Played for few hours, and must say it's more disturbing than scary. There are jumpscares, but I'm pretty much immune to such things. It's just a game after all :P Not like anything's gonna jump out of the screen to eat me.

I've also played few other horror games, most notable are Amnesia(the first one), Nosferatu(many years ago, but got it on Steam when it was a freebie too - great game). It's all about jumpscares...

And since you set one of the answers as Not playing them anymore since i wet myself while playing DooM, I remember my friend used to get mortally scared when playing Thief games. He tried a real horror one, and... Wish I had a video camera with me. That would make a good laugh :P

Yes, but be sure to play games with creepy atmospheres, like Amnesia, instead of random jumpscare games like Outlast. Having this creepy feeling and wanting to get away from the game all the time if better than just going through a game on rails and being shocked by flashing stuff like in a tunnel of horror...

System Shock 2 had traumatized me when I played it as a kid.

Today it's my all-time favorite game.

Also enjoyed F.E.A.R. and Dead Space back then.

It depends. I've played scary games. But I've also played plenty of games that were supposed to be scary but weren't.

No one played They Hunger? It is a free HL mod.
It is old, but back then it was scary.

They're certainly more scary than movies, mostly because it's interactive and it feels like you're in control of everything.

Resident Evil 6 is still quite scary today, I think.

I mean it's scary that Capcom is capable of releasing such a disappointing game.
