Well I was a bit disappointed tbh. Being in Europe I waited excitedly for the 24th... only to realize it would be the 25th for me! cry
Now I have to wait for next weekend, since I want to see it in certain weekend company :D

Mhm, half a year now I guess? A bit more probably, but never was that anxious about a new show or the start after holidays or anything. I know that from Amazon with some, but... somehow didn't think of it with Netflix :D

I don't think that the title sequence will grow on me. The final 15 seconds are nice, but overall it's too long and doesn't wake any emotions.

I think at this point everybody who occasionally visits this forum already knows that if it's not a Slice of Life Anime about little kids or a little kids show you won't watch it. We'll take this as a given from now on and you don't need to post in these threads anymore. Cool ? :D

I stand corrected then. And I agree, IT Crowd is hilarious :D

I don't know (or haven't seen) most of the other shows but judging by the few Red Dwarf clips I've seen linked here on SG (motivated Toaster scene) I'll probably check it out soonish. I've become quite a fan of BBC programming over the last few years after Misfits, The Musketeers, Sherlock and Doctor Who.

Not at all. Actually I felt like my comment in the morning was a bit dick-ish but it was early and I can be a bit of a grumpy Corgi when I haven't had my morning Red Bull yet.

On the note of Anime with an Slice of Life aspects / young protagonists: I've just started watching Made in Abyss the other day and from what I can tell so far (6 episodes in) it's pretty cool ;)

Most people don't pay for their Netflix themselves. Apparently in the US it's common practice to share a Netflix account with your friends while on this site of the great pond many people watch it through other means coughPrimewirecough or outright torrent it.

The new movies are remakes (and are crap imho), this series isn't. It's a new crew, new timeframe, new story, but same shared arc with TOS-TNG-DS9-Voy-Ent.. Not that that means it'll be that good, but at least it can be disliked for the right reasons :)

As for Sherlock, there are actually 2 shows and a movie. There's the British one, the American one (with Lucy Lu!), and the movies.

So I watched the premiere. I enjoyed it and thought it was good but they should have just had the whole series air on regular TV like every one, or at the very least be complimentary to subscribers of streaming services like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Hulu, etc. As such I am sorry to say that despite the fact that I liked it I definitely would not pay for CBS All-access and I think there are many people who are going to feel the same way, so to me this put the show in precarious position that may be fated for doom right from the outset because of the format chosen.

Unfortunately, this is the shape of things to come. Companies have finally seen the value in online streaming and are looking to monetize their properties exclusively. In fifteen years, we'll look back in awe at how spoiled we were with a handful of reasonably priced streaming services.

Well I hope that it doesn't come to pass like that. Hopefully enough people let their wallets do the talking to CBS (and others) by not opening them. On a side note this is why people are driven to piracy. And honestly I can't blame them in this case.

Well I hope that it doesn't come to pass like that.

As an industry insider, I can tell you that it is not looking good. De-centralization is gaining momentum: CBS All Access (with other major networks soon to follow), Disney pulling media and forming their exclusive service, and even the dominant services such as Netflix and Hulu are forced to adjust their pricing to either afford the higher wholesale contracts or in anticipation of impending fallout when the existing deals cease (without renewal).

As I said, it's been heading this way for awhile. Consumers are only just starting to feel it because the Networks' infrastructure is finally up to snuff to justify pushing the new services.

Comment has been collapsed.

Trends come and go. Sure, they are all over themselves now, to establish their own services. But just because everyone wants their share, does not mean that all of them will succeed. Soon enough several players might have to reconsider their ambitions.
If US customers should reward the fragmentation of the market though ... well, it certainly wouldn't be the first time that they harm themselves. ;)

You are mistaken, it is set shortly before the original series. Otherwise it wouldn't make sense that there is a cold war between the Federation and Klingon Empire (not really a spoiler if you have read a description of the show but I obfuscated it anyway).

Really difficult to compare from what I can tell so far. Orville is a Star Trek Spoof that feels like it's build around the premise "What if everybody in Starfleet Academy was a frat boy ?" while this is a real Star Trek show.

Well, it's not like Orville is really good and it's also rarely funny, but I liked the plot of the episodes so far.

I'm only 2/3rds through the first episode so I can't really tell yet but judging from the scene in the spacesuit in the beginning it seems to be pretty decent in the action department for a Star Trek show.

I didn't get this. :P

In Star Trek all members of Starfleet Academy always act very professional, you don't really have any loose cannons like Starbuck in Battlestar while in Orville everybody likes to party, get drunk or smoke weed on their job, goof around and in general act more like a member of a fraternity / sorority in college.

Not a big fan of Orville either. I mean decent effects, no complaints on acting, but the comedy doesn't work for me. I like smart humor, not jokes I can see a mile away, or overly forced.

What i was afraid of, a crew that doesn't seem likeable (maybe needs to grow) and it focusing more on action (rather then the soapy bit star trek was also) and being faster like the last few movies (which i didn't like) to keep the young kids happy.

Ah well i will gonna watch it in a bit too, to find out.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It definitely seems more like the last few movies, but I can't tell yet if it's because it's the series opener or if it's going to be a regular thing.
I do like the cast, though (what little they've focused on so far), and maybe they'll be enough to keep me watching.

Edit: It does seem like a program I'll be watching on the DVR, and not something I'll be anxiously waiting for each week. Entertaining, but meh at the same time.

Last show i was still anxious for every week was under the dome (which just got weird in the last season) While in the nineties there were so much more good (sf) shows, alot cancelled after 1 or 2 seasons.
But no, another singing/talent show or reality crap was more important for networks, the last decade.

I actually kind of liked that aspect. It's definitely different. They always struck me as perhaps appearing a bit too human-like, especially in the original series, so I didn't have a problem with a bit of a departure from the traditional. Although I will say that it now makes hybrid offspring between a Human and a Klingon less plausible.

I gotta agree. Their look, their armor, and even their ships had a fear-inspiring look to them that the other series and movies lacked.
They were the one thing that really stood out to me about the episode.

After finishing watching the first two episodes the Supreme Council of Corgis has come to a preliminary verdict.

We like it.

The only thing I really disliked was this "This Season on StarTrek Discovery" BS at the end of the 2nd episode. My attention span is long enough to keep watching without spoilers from upcoming episodes.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I got the impression they weren't confident enough in their pilot episodes, and wanted to assure us that the show'd improve. Certainly, that's what I got out of it- I'm far more interested in what the previews show than I was in the opening episodes. :X

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I can't say much about the teasers at the end of the 2nd episode because I rushed to the computer to pause as soon as they started.
Full disclosure I don't just hate those little teasers in Discovery, I have despised them eversince I first saw "Next time on Walking Dead presented by Microsoft Surface". I don't mind summaries at the beginning of an episode but I hate those spoilers of upcoming episodes. Sometimes they contain so much information I can basically reconstruct the whole episode from there.

If that is the case I wonder why. Despite the fact that Star Trek still can't make an interesting battle sequence even if their live depended on it, I thought it started out rather strong.

You'd have a hard time arguing that Trekkies "fell in love" with any series post-TNG.

Maybe DS9. Definitely not Voyager or Enterprise.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

In the past I probably would have agreed with that but after years of reruns and reflection I can honestly say that Voyager is probably my favorite series because it offered something different and storylines that the others couldn't. Incidentally, DS9 is the one series that I never really got in to and ended up largely skipping.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

me tooo :) - I watched voyager and finally enjoyed something that was different to the normal of a star trek uni - most people don't agree though - if you ever go back to DS9, treat it like your watching a space soap opera TV series and it becomes watchable :) even comfortable :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

As far as I know, "Trekkie" doesn't only refer to fans of the original series or two, but to anyone enamored with the Star Trek universe on the whole. As far as that, the very, very different approaches of each of the shows means that the preferences of the fanbase end up being quite split among the franchises. In fact, while polls consistently have TNG being labeled as the hands-down most popular iteration of the series, Voyager typically follows in second- so as soon as you open "Trekkie" to refer to anything except TNG exclusively, your previously stated sentiments become rather flawed.

Well I saw the first 2 eps. I went in expecting nothing, and come out the same.

It had its moments that I liked, but a lot I didn't care for. This can of course be forgiven in a pilot, as it has a lot to build up in a short time, but after the second ep I wasn't really looking for more. I'll keep watching to see if it hooks me, but for now it doesn't. At the end of the eps I only really felt anything for two characters, and it wasn't the star.
As for the preview, that didn't help any. Infact the reverse, it left me with more doubt about the series.

New Klingons, I don't hate them, but when they had them all get together there should have at least been some that had the more traditional look imho. I can accept the new ones being a more pure older bloodline, but give us some normals too. Like we had in Enterprise and the Kirk movies.
For anyone saying 'But but but the TOS Klingons!' one of the few good things Enterprise did (in an otherwise meh episode arc) was resolve that issue! And it was never one that affected the whole race, just part of it for a few generations.

Just finished the first episode. This is....not good. So much exposition that it's really insulting to the viewer. Dialogue at certain points feels like it's written by unpaid interns. There is zero chemistry between characters, everyone is just reading lines. The ship interior looks too dark for no good reason, how does anyone see anything in there? Not to mention the ridiculous amount of lens flare and especially dutch angles.
I'll watch the rest but only because I have nothing better to do til Punisher.
At least with the decent CGI the show is nice to look at but it doesn't have anything else besides that. IMHO it would be better if they slapped some other name on it instead of calling it Star Trek. It just doesn't feel like it at all.

I'd also recommend Orville to anyone who felt slightly disappointed by this like I did. For a show that sells itself as a parody of ST bordering on parody, it has far better written characters and story.

Permalink

Orville is...watchable. Most of the humor falls flat and feels forced and obvious. I did just watch ep3 and have mixed feelings on it, but overall it was a solid 45 mins of tv.

I liked it. It's far from perfect, but what was perfect. I mean, TOS was cancelled and TNG was booed the whole first season until it became a fan favorite. Give it some time. I really like that they did TOS-pilot thing where nothing is a real start but more like a prequel to real season start.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Almost every Trek series since TOS has suffered the "give it 2 seasons" syndrome:) TNG, DS9 and even VOY all get better after around season 3 and then in DS9's case especially 4. Only difference is Enterprise because it never got more beyond season 4, but the "Expanse/Xindi arc" of Season 3 was a huge step forward imho. Fourth season had some great episodes, too.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, that's kind of the issue: I had a season or more to get to like TNG, but I had half a pilot episode to decide whether or not to spend $6 a month with commercials or $10/month commercial free. It's $60/$100 for a full year, but the season's only 15 episodes and there will be months without a new episode (December, for example), so the annoying piecemeal approach of signing up, canceling, signing up again might be the best way to go, if all you're interested in is catching the latest STD.

Personally, I'm thinking I'll sign up for a one-week free trial at the time the season finale is released. If All Access offers as much value as Netflix or Amazon Prime (which also provides free kindle books, free music streaming, free shipping, Twitch Prime, etc.), then I'll consider shelling out $100 a year. CBS will need being a lot more to the table than a new episode of STD once every few weeks and the ability to watch old episodes of CSI: Miami on demand, however.

well in fact that wasn't all too bad. some cliche stuff obviously plus we all know how things turned out the last time we saw a female captain. ;P

but for now it seems more interesting than archer's enterprise. i stopped watching that during some season break and i never felt like watching again.

at any rate it can't get any worse than the last few mockup star trek movies. decent sci-fi action if you are into that but utterly terrible star trek movies.
