Welcome to my new event, the PEW PEW PEW Trains❗

[For updates to the game, please see my first post below the thread description! If you want any of these features, you need to download the latest version and install it over the top of your current version!]

Hi, everyone! I've sent out all of the keys for wins where the player code was valid! I have also tried to reach out to each person individually that did not have a valid code to explain what's wrong (e.g., the player never added their player name and code at all, the code is the default one for "player" [this happened a lot], etc.) and to please fix it ASAP. When you update your invalid code with the correct one, please send me a SG message or IM me on Steam, and I'll check it and get your key sent out as soon as I can (I'm going to be in a training class the next couple of days, so will only be online in the evenings).

If there is an issue with a key, please agree to delete the GA, and I will find an alternate prize for you!

Congrats to all of the winners!

This event is all about action games! All of the games in the GAs for this event include one of three things:

  1. Guns!
  2. Lazzzzers!
  3. EXPLOSIONS πŸ’£πŸ’₯
    Or, preferably, ALL THREE!

When I thought about how I wanted to do an action-game-based set of trains, I thought, "why not make it so participants have to actually play an action game and get a decent score to enter the trains?" Yeah! But where was I to get a game that would let me insert links to trains in it? Well, I looked and looked, but couldn't find anything that would work. So, there was only one answer: I'd have to make one.

That's right, people, I MADE YOU A FREAKING VIDEO GAME!

I think that this is the first time we've done this on SG, but I could be wrong. Either way, I wanted to do something new and different for this event.

[For the mods: yes, people are going to have to download something that I made. No, I do not make money from this in any way, it includes no advertising nor any type of promotion, and I do not intend to sell it in the future. In other words, there is no personal gain of any type for me in this. I developed this strictly for a SteamGifts event to give to the community. Just wanted y'all to know that I always try to follow the rules. πŸ˜πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘πŸ»]

Please read everything that follows! I know that it's a lot, but it's all important (plus, I took the time to write it 😏).

So what is this game?

The game is called 1954, and it is an endless, RNG-based shooter that heavily rips off was inspired by the classic 80s video game, 1945. It started out as me doing a tutorial for a very, very crappy version of that game, and I thought, "man, I can work on this and make it way better than this garbage," so I did. I found a guy who created a sprite sheet that replicates the graphics from 1945 almost to the pixel, and he was offering it as full public domain for use in anyone else's project. As I'm not any kind of real artist, I grabbed it, thanked him, and used it as my inspiration to create this game. All sound effects were either from packs I own or came from Freesound.org (I will be adding credits to the end of this thread later).

Hey, that's super. How does the event work? The trains, man, the trains!

Ok, there are two trains in this event. The first one contains 82 carts and the second one contains 83 carts, for a total of 165 GAs. They're running from today until mid-day (CT US) on February 10th. To enter the trains, you must play the 1954 video game and achieve a good enough score to expose the 5-character code that you can type into the URL of the first invite-only GA of each train (if you don't know how to do this, I or many others around SG can help you understand how to make it work).

First things first: you need to download the (very small) installer for the game from HERE.

Then, play the game. Be sure to change your player name to your SteamGifts name! You need to score at least 10,000 points to get the code for the first train. You need to score 25,000 points to get the code for the second train. As you would expect, the games in the second train are of higher average quality or are more rare/unique/etc. The second train also includes a couple of non-bundled GAs at the end.

You will see the train codes on the Game Over screen after you game ends if your high score is qualifying (meaning that if you are trying to get a higher score and don't do well on another game, you'll still see any codes that you qualified for from previous games). They will be clearly labeled Train 1 and Train 2. You can use these codes to enter the trains by replacing the ????? in this URL: "steamgifts.com/giveaway/?????/"

Also, don't try to hack the saved high score. It's encrypted. You'll likely fail. Just play the game, Cheaty McCheaterpants. 😜

So what's to keep people from just giving the codes to their friends so that they can cheat and not even play the game?

Hey, I'm glad you asked! So, the other thing you'll need to pay attention to is the winner code that follows your name on the Game Over screen. When your game is over, in the middle of the screen, you'll see your score, the high score, your player name, and finally your winner code under that (see attached graphic at the bottom with this and the train codes highlighted in green boxes). This is why it's important to enter your SteamGifts id as your player name. The code that is generated is completely unique to your player name and is generated using a terrifying algorithm that I created. If you're a cryptologist, you might be able to break it in a few hours, but it would be a lot easier just to play the game.

So, when you're ready to enter the trains, go right ahead. But, the other thing you need to do is update this Google Sheet with your player name (SteamGifts id) and the generated code. I will be checking all winners by running their SG name through my algorithm, and if it doesn't match, I'll be contacting you to prove to me that you played (in case you just made a typo or your arch enemy changed your entry or something). But anyone caught cheating will have their GA re-rolled and they'll go straight on my blacklist for life, so please just play the game that I took the time to make for you, ok?

RECAP:

  1. Download and install the game
  2. Run the game and be sure to enter your SteamGifts name as the player name
  3. Score at least 10,000 to enter train 1 and/or 25,000 to enter train 2
  4. Take note of your winner code and add it to the Google Sheet

More about the game

The basic instructions are included in the game (just click on the question mark on the menu screen), but I also want go over some things here as well as provide some more semi-spoiler-level stuff for those who are curious about where/how the difficulty ramp-up works.

Controls are simple: you move your plane with either the WASD or arrow keys. You shoot with the space bar (you can just hold it down) or the Enter key. Press the pause key or the P key to pause the game. No, I didn't make reassignable keys (it's actually a big pain in GameMaker Studio...you should see the code that I had to write just to allow you to enter your player name and save it), but at I did try to include two sets to support both righties and lefties. 😎

You can turn the music on/off by simply clicking on the musical note on the menu screen.

You can resize the game window, and the game should scale appropriately. You can also switch to full-screen (and back) by using alt-Enter. For ultra-wide-screen gamers like me, it should letterbox things appropriately in full screen.

Shoot everything that moves. At first the game starts very slowly, but believe me, it will eventually get close to a bullet-hell game. Be vigilant about picking up power-ups...they are your key to survival when the difficulty ramps up. At very high scores, power-ups will be very frequent and practically litter the screen. Grab everything that you can...they're worth points, plus caching as much of the spread-shot power-ups as possible is key to carving through a screen full of enemies.

I've tested the install on multiple PCs, and everything seems to run ok even on a fairly-potato computer. Oh, and sorry, you need to be running Windows to play the game. No linux distro (I'd love to, but no time for the extra build and testing). No Mac (shouldn't you be running Parallels, anyway? 😜).

Notes and tactics

  • Enemy bullets remove 10% of your health.
  • Colliding with an enemy plane is instant death (so if you have to choose between a plane and a bullet, clearly choose the bullet).
  • When you lose a life, your gun speed powerup will be reduced by one, and you will lose your diagonal shot
  • Your bullets can collide with your enemies’ bullets in midair! This is a key tactic to surviving in the game.
  • The most important tactic is to upgrade your guns and use them for defense as well as offense.
  • The second most important tactic is to load up on every spread shot powerup you can grab.
  • No bonuses will spawn before 500 points
  • Bonuses will come more quickly as you progress through the game…at very high scores, they will drop rapidly. You’ll need them to survive, so grab everything you can without colliding with enemies.
  • The first gun speed powerup only spawns after 1K
  • The second gun speed powerup and diagonal shot powerup only spawn after 2K
  • You can have a maximum of 5 lives from collecting powerups
  • Grabbing a spread shot powerup gives you 5 rounds of shots at 1 shot per second
  • There is no limit to how many spread shot power ups you can collect, e.g., if you grab 4 powerups, you’ll have 20 seconds/rounds of spread shots
  • Enemy shooting speed increases as your score increases
  • Enemies arrive more quickly as your score increases
  • Bombers arrive every 2K-2.5K
  • Kamikaze Storms arrive every 2.5K-3K
  • Formations arrive every 1K-2K starting at 500-800
  • Jets arrive every 1K-1.5K starting at 3K-3.5K
  • Bombers get tougher to kill throughout the game, with a maximum HP of 200
  • Bombers will travel along one of three various flight paths
  • Bombers have three different shot patterns: burst, spiral, and volley. Learn them and use your guns to protect against them
  • Under 3K, enemy formations are always comprised of Fighters
  • From 3K-8K, enemy formations can be Fighters or Heavy Fighters
  • At 8K, enemy formations are always Heavy Fighters
  • At 4K, Fighters and Heavy Fighters increase in speed
  • At 5K, the Jets increase their fire rate
  • At 5K, sometimes the Kamikazes will attack from the side
  • At 6K, some of the Spewers will slide sideways
  • At 12K, the center (or 2 leads in double-V) plane in a formation will be a Spewer
  • At 15K, the Jets get 50% more HP
  • At 25K, small enemies other than the Kamikaze gain an extra HP
  • At 30K, the Jets arrive in pairs

Important note: lior9905 has added 29 new carts to the end of the first PEW PEW PEW train! If you haven't already found them, go back and enter some more GAs!

If I missed anything or anyone has any further questions, ask away.

Ok, I think that covers everything! So play the game, which I hope is fun for you, and best of luck with all of the PEW PEW PEW GAs!!!

Update #1:

I just updated the install on the Google Drive. Changes:

  1. Both the "P" key and the Pause key will pause the game
  2. I added code to draw white boxes behind the code text on the Game Over screen since it was so freaking hard to read. Yeah, I know, too late for some of you who already have eye strain from reading it, but at least I can save the others. πŸ˜†πŸ˜‚

Update #2:

  1. Fixed a bug that Corran found where the enemy planes disappear at very high scores.
  2. Added a fire-lock (autofire) feature: Just press "L" (for "lock") to toggle it on or off...no more holding space bar or Enter if you don't want πŸ€“πŸ˜ƒ

Update #3: (Feb 2, 2020 - 3:16 am :D )

  1. Added 3-second invincibility on respawn -- now you'll have time to fly away from the jets or bomber if either are sitting right on your respawn position. Just get your butt out of there fast! The code to make it happen wasn't quite as bad as I thought, so I knocked it out tonight after I got back from dinner. πŸ€˜πŸ»πŸ€“πŸ€˜πŸ»
  2. Updated instruction page graphics with newly-added keys for pause and fire lock

Update #4: (Feb 3, 2020 - 2:39 am :D )

  1. Per request, I've relocated the warning texts (Kamikaze Storm, Incoming Formation, Invincibility) to a higher location on the screen so that they have less chance of blocking the view of planes/bullets/etc. that are likely closer to the player (since the player is probably down toward the bottom of the screen)

So, if you want these changes, download the updated version and install it...you should be able to just slap it right over the top of the other one. πŸ‘πŸ»

Played it today, nicely done. If you're considering to keep improving it, I think it could use some tweaks:

  • Shooting should be automatic, as there's no reason not to shoot at any time during the game and having to press a button doesn't make much sense.
  • It feels like it's a pretty generous game, I had to purposefully end the run because despite dying relatively often (kamikazes are so annoying) I could just grab some more power ups and lives that would just spawn for me. Having enough time, I could just go on forever.
    • Maybe add difficulty levels and just have power ups spawn less often the higher they go.
  • Also I got a feeling that I gained more points from the power ups than from killing enemies, which doesn't make much sense to me.
  • Maybe it was a joke, but I couldn't find the pause button. - EDIT: I've reread the OP, dunno if I just missed the thing about the P or if you updated that later.
  • Boss battles, with your usual boatload of HP, complex movement and attack patterns... You know the deal :D

There's more I could think of, but it's making me feel like I'm saying the game is bad, which is not. Also, from reading other comments before submitting, you already realized most of this... anyway, most important than anything else, thanks for the event and all the effort you put towards this community. It amazes me that we have people like you around :)

Hey, thanks, and everything you've said is right on-point. I'm not sure how much more I'll invest in this game, as it's really my very first one in GameMaker and I primarily made it to learn and then leverage the results to do something fun on SteamGifts. But I might, you never know. If I make it better at some point, I'll probably get a codejam account and post it for free there.

It's definitely too easy if you're good at schmups, so doing a few more things to keep the action interesting and make it challenging will be top of the list if I add more.

BTW, there is a fire-lock now...I coded it yesterday based upon feedback. I updated the instructions to reflect that as well. Just press the L key and no more having to hold down anything else. I also coded invincibility upon respawn late last night, so no more chain deaths because the bomber or a jet was right over the respawn point. Just download the game again from the Google drive, and you should have the most recent version.

Also, I've been putting update notes in the first post past the main thread. Yeah, kind of hard to notice since the thread is so long, but it's there. 😁 Thanks for playing and for the feedback!

Yep, I think the toughest point is between 3K and 8K. Depending upon how the RNG gods treat you, that part can get tough if you haven't been able to amp up your guns. That's where powerups still come slowly, but the enemies are starting to get a little harder to deal with.

There's a point where you're juiced up enough and the powerups come quickly enough that, even if you get dropped, you should be able to fight your way back pretty quickly. Once you discover how to essentially use your guns as a big shield and what priority order to go after enemies (hint, be very, very aggressive taking out the Spewers and the Bomber when it's on-screen...clear them out and then you're able to easily deal with everything else), you can play almost indefinitely. I cracked 130K yesterday and eventually just committed suicide. :D

Indeed, at some points power ups are starting to appear so commonly that it gets pretty easy to continue.
The second run was a lot better, 70k points.

Overall, it was a fun run! Thanks for this little gem!

Nice! Yeah, I actually feel like the game is a little too easy. I kept adding things and then finding places to ramp up the difficulty, but I found that if I went much further, it tipped past challenging into unfair. I would have liked to introduce other, new things to find that nice middle ground, but at some point you just have to call it done when you're making something for an event. I'm not trying to sell a game on Steam or anything, here. :D

yeah im pretty terrible with those types of games. I would keep gaining health then suddenly losing like 2 or 3 only to return to surviving and gaining them back. Couldn't make up my mind then as soon as i hit that number it was like okay lets free you

🀣🀣🀣🀣🀣 Nice

At 30K, you've pretty much hit max difficulty, as then the jets start coming out in pairs. This is sometimes more challenging than expected. Adding the jets was the last thing I did...I realized that it was too easy to stay alive by just sitting at the bottom of the screen, so by having some enemies come from behind, it makes that another potentially deadly spot, which forces the player a little higher on the screen to keep from being insta-killed. It makes the rest of the game more interesting, because you have to react just a bit faster if you're closer to the middle.

I went 150540. I thought I would eventually get killed, but I realized after a while the only way I would lose is if I ended it myself.

It was a nice small game. I'm just glad the kamikazes never came from behind and that I never saw two bombers on the same screen.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, I considered kamikazes from behind, but that seemed like a bit much. You can get two bombers on the same screen if you don't take one of them out fast enough. One time, the RNG gods were unkind to me, and the game kept throwing spewers at me at a fairly high level, and then a kamikaze storm came...and I just couldn't get to that bomber. Well, his buddy showed up a couple of minutes later and then I was really in trouble.

Maybe I'll go back later and add a higher difficulty setting and allow things to get really out of hand. :D

Yeah, I considered that, but since your bullets are a totally different shape, I found that after a bit of practice, I didn't have too much issue. Plus, I kept thinking the game was too easy, so if this added a bit of challenge without being unfair, I felt like it might be a good thing.

Plus, in the original 1945 game, all shots are the same color. :)

Anyway, I hope you're having a good time playing, regardless of the shot color. πŸ˜πŸ‘πŸ»

WOW, this seems like a great event! I'll definitely have to try this out!

One thing of note:

Press the pause key to pause the game.

My only computer with a dGPU is a laptop (yes, you read that correctly), and thus it is essentially the only computer I ever use myself. My keyboard--following the trend of laptop keyboards of choosing aesthetics over usability and thus deleting all the useful or extraneous keys--has no Pause/Break key. (It also has no scroll lock/right context menu/print/Sys Req keys) At least it has a windows key, unlike my previous laptop--which had all those extra keys.

If you or anyone reading this ever makes a game for an event here at some point in the future, please map the Pause to "Pause" and "p." Thank you!

~A frustrated (but not at you) gamer who used to rely on that key and misses it desperately when it isn't there. Railroad Tycoon 2 (100s of hours logged) Is essentially unplayable without it.

Hey, thanks for the heads-up. I'm getting ready to head out to dinner, but if I get time later, I'll try to add some code to make P the pause key as well. Assuming that I get that done, I'll update the installer on the Google drive, and post in the thread so that you can get an updated version. :)

Thank you for being willing to consider adding that! I truly was not asking you to change or update the game, as I would be happy to play it as is, I was merely grousing about my laptop's keyboard design as well as providing hints for future projects for whoever read it. :-)

I hope you have a really great dinner! :-)

PS: I realize I forgot to include the "at some point in the future" bit in my first comment, even though I meant it in my head. 😳 My deepest apologies! I certainly didn't mean for it to come out as a demand or anything of the sort, and am very sorry if it did.

No worries at all! It's a good suggestion. I just got home and am trying to answer messages, but I'll fire things up after bit and see what it will take (the only reason I have to wonder is that I got the pause module from another GML dev that created it as an add-on, which saved me at least a couple of hours of coding, and many thanks to that guy...but I'll have to modify a bit of his code that I borrowed, so I don't know it as well as the rest of the app :) ).

You can pause with the P key now as well. :)

Also, I just added new draw commands to put white boxes behind the text on the Game Over screen to make it a LOT easier to read.

Just download the updated version from the Google Drive and install it over the top of the old one, and you should be good to go.

Thanks. Yes, I did feel like, at some point, you can just sort of bulldoze the whole thing. The difficulty pretty much maxes out around 30K-40K. If I were trying to make a more commercial product, I'd have waves, bosses, and spend a ton of time on balancing. :)

Lol, ok fair enough. Sorry that I don't have time or resources for a Mac build. I do have an old Macbook Pro in the house that I could probably test it on, but I think that I'd have to get the dev tools separately for Mac as well, then get the code ported over there, build it on the Mac, etc. It's actually a pretty cumbersome process. Sorry about that...I'd love to have builds for every platform, but there are definitely time and money constraints on that. :)

No need to be sorry. I think it's awesome you're doing it at all! It's kind of inspiring, actually--there's an ambitious puzzle I've been itching to put together ever since I joined SG, but I would need to learn a LOT of programs I'm not familiar with yet (mostly image-editing software). The fact that folks like you do stuff like this just for the hell of it encourages me to think I could too!

Uh, there's one character that can be accidentally misinterpreted as a number. Try swapping that. :)

I'm silly. I kept putting /giveaways/ instead of /giveaway/

Thanks.

after 100k it became much easier because I realised that those big rocks can't hurt me xD Killed myself after 200k - have to go to bed xD
Great game though :)
Reminds me my first gaming experiences (in a good way).

So double thanks! For nice game and trains :3

You're welcome! Yeah, I kept it old-school and pure reaction/skill-based. It very much reminds me of playing in the arcade or on my old Commodore when I was a little kid.

I may get crazy another time and play around with adding some waves/patterns/other stuff to give it more variety. I may limit the drop-rate on the powerups a bit more too, just to increase the challenge level a bit.

Yup. I was also thinking about C64.
And seriously - If you would add some late/mid game stuff. New patterns and maybe bosses - that could be even sold on steam xD
Hell - even in current form it's much better that 98% of stuff that they let enter the store xD
