Ok guys, whenever you get a new PC you turn it ona nd it starts the windows installation once you turn it on. I am selling a PC on craigslist and I just bought Windows 7 for it. How do I make it do that? cuz I son't want to preinstall the whole OS.

By booting from a CD, DVD or USB device that is prepared especially for that.. bootable install disk.

But you won't be able to make the OS be on Disk and ready to be fully installed on boot like companies do.. those are scripted and prepared for their systems. Just the fact that you ask the question means you don'T have the knowledge of how to do such a scripted install setup.

there are tools out there that let you create a custom install disk, go educate yourself before telling someone it can not be done, unattended install

Where did I say it could not be done ? He didn't ask for a custom install disk.. he asked for a pre-installed automatic install on first boot. The fact he asks here if and how it can be done shows he didn't search for it first or doesn't even know what he's looking for.. for these reasons I wouldn't suggest him to get into it.

What is it I should be doing ? Your reply is kinda pointless.. if you wanna help the OP just reply to him, trying to find a comeback for your inability to read correctly in the first place is kinda futile.

And I will repeat myself.. I never said it could not be done. I can tell you really have a hard time reading.. sorry about your condition.

Again.. you want to help the OP answer him directly.. no point replying to me with your attitude. You understand pointless?

Press and hold delete key on the MB screen (the startup) to get into bios and there change the booting sequence to boot from CD/DVD. Thats the usuall way.

If it's an old computer of yours, know that people can fairly easily get your personal data off of it even if you deleted the data or formatted the drive. This can mean credit card or other sensitive information. You should really use some (relatively) secure deletion method like http://www.dban.org/.

To answer your question, you need to go into the BIOS. I generally spam delete and some function (f#) keys to get there because they are the common ways, and the exact method depends on your motherboard. Ideally it tells you briefly on startup.

are you talking about the first time setup wizard that runs? while i'm not sure if this is it, I remember being able to trigger that wizard using something called windows Out Of Box Experience (OOBE) removing all user settings and getting ready for a new deployment. might be worth a google

Why would you buy an operating system for a computer you're selling? Seems like a waste of money. Just reformat using whatever OS is already on there.

what you want to do is called sysprep. its usually only done by MS and resellers. i used to work for such a place and we used a special disc to do it that came with our OEM(not retail or public) copys of windows to do it. i have no idea if these can be found online but i would think so.
some versions of windows had this built into it and could be done without the disc but its been a couple years and i cant remmeber which ones tbh

Have you checked that the bootable OS media source (DVD or USB stick) is at the top of the boot order list in your BIOS?

If I understood the OP correctly, he wants to ship his used computer to someone and have it install Windows 7 when the buyer turns it on. If that is true, then a few things come to mind:

1) The hard drive in the computer had better be new/unused or wiped with a program specially designed for that. Otherwise, it's free data.
2) The easiest way to install Win7 on boot is to set the BIOS to boot from CD and insert the Win7 CD. (See the other comments, above.)
3) Any installation of Win7 is going to want a key, so the buyer will need one (either his own, or the one you provide).

If your idea is to set up the computer to install Windows 7 without a CD and then have the buyer use his own key for validation, there are ways to do that. Unless you have a sysprep CD, however, it would probably be less effort to do the install yourself and leave the software validation for later.

Make sure the option is on in your BIOS, restart your computer, you might have to press a key at startup ( it will tell you to ), like F12, depending on the machine.

Make sure the DVD has been burned, not just copy paste.
