Vuelta a España 2017

I wasn't gonna do a Giro or Vuelta event but since a few people asked me if I was going to make one, I couldn't resist.

How it works

Predict who is going to win each stage of the race. Anyone with at least one correct predicition will be eligible to enter the (50+ games) winners' event that I will organise at the end of the cycling season.

Leave your prediction for each stage on the giveaway for that stage. Below you can see a table with all of them but you can just go the first one and use the next stage link on there to go through all of them.

Preview

This event is a little more limited than the Tour event though; no Tour Touristique and the preview is just a direct copy/paste of Fernando Escartín's comments from the offical site, so no speculations about the individual stage winners (by me, that is, feel free to add your own).

I can't help but do a very quick listing of a few riders for the general qualification victory. :)
Keep in mind only predictions for stage winners qualify for the winners' event but feel free to discuss the possible general qualification winners below.

  • Chris Froome is going to try to become the third man in history to win both the Tour and the Vuelta in one season (and the first to do so since the Vuelta got moved from Spring to its current slot in the calendar). The bookies seem to think he can do it. He'll have Wout Poels there to help him.
  • Many of the contenders you'd expect are there this year; Fabio Aru, Rigoberto Uran, Vincenzo Nibali, Esteban Chaves, Romain Bardet, etc, all have done the Tour as well.
  • Alberto Contador announced he is retiring after the Vuelta so this will be his final farewell.
  • Last year's winner, Nairo Quintana, won't be there, however.
  • Also not starting is Tom Dumoulin, which is a shame. However, he won the BinckBank Tour just last week, which was contended by a whole raft of great riders (Sagan, Van Avermaet, I could name ten more).
  • As I am keeping this short, I am bound to have forgotten someone.

You have a few entries but no comments yet (that I noticed on the GAs) ... here's a bump and a question - I don't really follow or know much about cycling. Is it OK to guess the same person for every stage? I don't need to participate but it would make it slightly more interesting, and maybe I'd even pay attention to the results (like playing fantasy sports).

Well, every single stage would be a bit boring but it's perfectly ok to guess one person for all mountain stages and someone else for all the flat stages, for instance. I'd say two minutes on Google would result in some likely candidates. :)

I would probably have better odds if I picked the same cyclist for all stages, but I did my best :)

again, sorry for all the notifications, but you asked for it ... I guess I feel weird being the only participant at this time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

No need to apologise for the notifications, that's what comes with the event. :)

And thanks for all your predictions, you really went above and beyond, I think there's a good chance you'll get at least one right!

Hopefully more participants will show up soon. I think the average Giro stage had about six or seven.

Let's hope he'll be attacked more than in the Tour.

(Also wish I had some actual time to watch the Vuelta; hopefully I can from Thursday onwards.)

I do think he will be attacked more because this is really a Vuelta for climbers as there are 8 stages with the finish at the top of a mountain.

Warren Barguil was taken out of the Vuelta by Team Sunweb because he wouldn't wait for Wilco Kelderman when he had a flat tire...

It's being streamed on the website here from 16:00 onwards and also broadcast on tv in the weekends.

But today they showed our hockey guys beating Belgium 4-2 to become European Champions. :)

Commiserations; Belgium should have won the match based on the first half.

You should have seen the Tour de France event. :)

Damn!

QuickStep has a lock on the best sprinters this year... How can one team have Kittel, Gaviria, and Trentin? lol

Here's an impressive stat; this year, QuickStep has won five stages each in the Giro, the Tour, and the Vuelta.

And they might get more as we have over a week of Vuelta to go.
