As a suggestion, could you add a column listing the month that a certain game was added? This would greatly help those of us who only sub now and then, but wish certain Trove games. In my case, I have Tacoma on my steam wishlist, and do not remember if I got it from the trove or not. Having the month it was added to the chart would help, as I could see at a glance if it is an addition since the last time I subbed.

Tacoma was added last month, it was a Twitch Prime freebie previously.

Hello! Why not, I could add the month. If you search in the comments, you'll see that I post the new games every month. Finally, the last games are added on the top of the chart.
I'm not sure what you mean when you say you don't know if you got Tacoma from the Trove or not. It's a DRM-free download, so I guess you already "have" it if the installer is present on your computer. When you're not subbed, you don't have access anymore to all the games in the Trove, not just the new ones.

When I had commented, I had not looked at the older comments, just at the chart. I had not before realized that the new games were at the top of the chart, sorry.

Because of storage issues, I keep offline installers on an external, unconnected hard drive. Thus it isn't quite as easy as opening the folder on my PC. When I had written the previous comment, I had not yet gone to the bother of digging out said external drive to look.

A benefit of having the months in the chart would be (in the future) we would be able to sort by the month games were added, and maybe be
able to see a pattern to games' removal from the trove, and thus guess as to which are going to be removed soon.

As always, thank you for running and maintaining this thread! I really appreciate it!

All right, I understand, thank you for the explanation :) I'll try to update the chart asap. For removals, there's no clear pattern, it's probably the end of an agreement between Humble and publisher/dev.

No rush at all. Now that I know about the comments, and that the new ones go on top, I can find them easily enough. :D
Yeah, that would make more sense that the agreement would expire and not HB go "this game has been in the trove for too long, let's get new blood here."

Quick question, around which time of the month do they usually add new games to Monthly Trove? I definitely want to cancel my subscription, as the September early unlocks are a big fat "no thanks" for me - just wondering if I can wait for the next games added to Trove before doing so.

Yup, already did so on Friday. Grabbed the Linux version of Chaos on Deponia (comes in handy, I already have it on Steam, but I don't want to install a Steam client on Linux) and Broken Sword 3 (which was missing in my collection entirely). Now let's see if it takes another 2 years before I'll resubscribe ;-) Thanks for the reminder.

There's only a few that have been been removed, which you can see in the list.

If you are interested in downloading all the games from the Trove it's roughly 90.6 GB(with the 3 games removed included and the original Knight Club as well as a small updated version that came a few days later).

Yeah it's unfortunate that those titles are removed. I believe this is the largest amount of games removed at one time so far.

I believe I have all of the titles that were in the trove downloaded just because they do get removed. With the 3 new games and all the other titles(I believe I have them all) it's 97.1 GB.

About twice that (~191GB) for all Win/Mac/Linux versions. And the latest batch makes my HDD more crowded than I'd like for the time being, so that's only up to date for last month.

Is there any kind of warning when or what will be removed? Stupidly it didn't occur to me that this might happen. I always considered the Trove to be a nice DRM-free 'backup' in case the games disappeared from other platforms. Doh!

No warning unfortunately. I just count the games every month and see if it matches the total from last month. Then I try to find which ones are missing.

i just have trouble playing games that are also on steam and come with achievements. if there are no achievements i will play anywhere any time. but knowing i would have to play a game twice kills it for me. risking having to play it again on steam for achievements makes me not wanna play at all till i get it for steam

no one forces you to play it twice. games should be played for fun, not for achievements.

+1. And while it's nice that achievements can give longevity for a game, I doubt it's really needed in the era of bundles and overwhelming amounts of good games released.

Some of us get genuine enjoyment from earning achievements though ;)
You can say that it's silly or that it's pointless when there are those achievement spam games and both would be valid points, but to each their own. Me, I like my achievements and if a game has them, I want to have them displayed on Steam :)

games should be played for fun, not for achievements.

Some games have meaningful or communicative achievements, so if you're playing the version without them, you're basically missing out on some content.

I had this experience, for instance, trying to play Pillars of the Earth on Twitch.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Umm, they look standard achievements that spell out what you just did. I'm not sure if having a written " you did X" really counts as content, as you just do that on screen anyway. At that point not using closed captions is missing out content too, because you get "extra"info written by that.

They're part of the choice and consequence element of the game which is thus diminished.

There are feats that are not acknowledged in any other way in game other than an achievement, so if the achievement is missing the player might not even know that they've pulled off something for which the game dev think they deserve some kind of reward or that might have consequences later.

They're part of the choice and consequence element of the game which is thus diminished.

They are outside of the game though. Many games doesn't even unlock achievements without having an online connection.
Also not knowing "that they've pulled off something for which the game dev think they deserve some kind of reward or that might have consequences later." impacts literally nothing. This is the shitty nature of achievements. I could make a give and literally give achievements for everything. Or for a few things. Or for nothing. And while still playing the very same game, people looking for external confirmation can be manipulated into feeling happy about the thing that they wouldn't even consider doing if not for the "shinies".
The game doesn't change. People get a different experience because they want something for playing, getting through the game and its story is not enough anymore.
Seriously though, that's like saying a book having a bar of chocolate packed with it is a superior product than the book itself, because if you write every 50th page "now reward yourself with a block of chocolate mate" then it has something extra!!!4!
You may have better time with cheevos. But they won't make the game better, and fueling the thirst harms games without cheevos in the future.

This. I will never understand this. When a game is developed, it doesn't have achievements. It's meant to be played and explored. Part of the fun is figuring things out. If someone's goal is to play a game within 2 days and get all the achievements with a guide, they haven't really played it. They've gone through the motions of "playing" but they haven't experienced the game. I used to play games on console only up until a few years ago. I took my time and my first play through could take a while, but I liked it like that.

Does it make those people feel awesome to have completed a game in a short time frame with all the achievements? Do they expect others to believe that they completed a relatively difficult puzzle game in record time with all of the achievements without having used a manual to basically bypass all the puzzles? I roll my eyes every time I see a negative review for a relatively difficult and great little puzzle game where some idiot claims it's too easy and they finished in record time. XD

The game doesn't change. People get a different experience

Music is useless then. Music doesn't change the game, just the player experience.

I have a friend or two who play games muted, they will agree with you on this wholeheartedly.

Music is in the game regardless of platform and internet connection, that is an important difference though.
Also it often serves a purpose (sound cues, step sounds in csgo, sound feedback) while not having Skyrim environmental music rather picking a celtic playlist from youtube doesn't really impact the game experience, especially if not knowing how the original music is :) But for example the songs of Bastion tie into the game and convey additional information, not just tone.

On the other hand one would say that having a crying kid in the background is a negative experience, so someone not having kids have the superior version of the game (strictly talking about the game as piece of entertainment!) compared to parents :P Because if we value games by external slapped on things, then go nuts!

As a clarification: I'm not saying you as a person can't have more fun with a game if it have achievements. Though I absolutely oppose saying things like " if you're playing the version without them, you're basically missing out on some content."
Achievements that aren't inside of the game on every platform/client is extra content, not a core one "missed out" while playing a version without it - that is just elitism. (If you're not ordering your pizza with extra cheese or pineapple, you're missing out some content. Absurd when I put it this way, right?)

You are entitled to your opinion, but all of the arguments you have brought to the table are argumentative fluff on the best of days, which makes it pointless to further discuss any of this.

Now you just skip over the "it's extra which is nice to have, not core that is missed out" which is a fact if achievements
are not part of every iteration of the game.

True, there is no point talking with you until you get off the high horse with your "argumentative fluff" (It wasn't me who started comparing ingame music with a frame client's achievement systems.)
Next time at least have something kinda okay before graciously wanting to end a non-argument, will you?

thats 100% my point, you dont know you are going to be forced to play it twice. so it does force you. if you play it off steam beat it, but you magically win the game a year later or get it in a bundle a year later. you are then forced to play it over again to 100% it and get all the achievements

how are you forced exactly? by what or whom?

Let's face it, without achievements, you'd probably fly through the game pretty quickly anyway. If it's a good game, why not play it again. No one gets all of the achievements in one play through anyway, unless they are using a guide or the game is pretty linear... and using a guide takes all the fun out of playing in the first place.

i always use guides when i do my first play through, i hate missing achievements lol. i like to make sure i 100% in a quick and orderly fashion xD

I can't do that. For me, it destroys the whole experience of the game if you know exactly what to do next. They're not meant to be played efficiently. They're games, they're supposed to be enjoyed and part of the fun is figuring stuff out. Screw the few missed achievements. I just go back and get them later if I feel like a replay.

I can't help but think that to you, Steam is the game. lol. The games themselves are just a means to get achievements. xD. Like, you're not actually experiencing a game in the way the devs intended if you're worried about finishing it as quickly and efficiently as possible. It's okay if that's your thing, just kinda sounds that way to me. lol.

I noticed I got the german version of The Whispered World when I clicked to download. I am from Germany so it's alright (and German is probably this game's "native" language anyway), but out of interest, is there a way to influence the language version that is going to be downloaded, for Trove games in general?

I got the german version as well, and I'm in the US. There are no language options on the site, at least as far as I can see.

Also FYI, there are no language options inside the game, so if you don't speak german, avoid this one, at least for now. It was probably a mistake since it's (also) not the special edition, as the graphic on the trove page indicates.

Yes, probably a mistake. Plus the special edition should have a multi language installer.

It's now the special edition; not sure when they re-uploaded it.
