Hi all,

When I want to play an ARPG game Torchlight II is my go-to game, a 30-minute dungeon feels good. Though I cannot play it because somehow native build doesn't work on my system for a while. I'm aware that it works fine with Proton but there is no cloud support on that one. I'm on Manjaro and used to add LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libfreetype.so.6 %command% to launch options would've been enough to play. Now it doesn't work anymore. I tried a couple workarounds but no luck. Do you have any ideas?

Also here is a little giveaway.

Edit:
The problem is solved (quicker than I thought) though the giveaway will be here for 4 more days. Hope you have a nice day.

Do you play games on Linux?

Yes.
No.
Potato!?
What's Linux?

I need more data.
Do you get any error messages?
Also, do you have problems with other games or is it just Torchlight II?

Thanks for the reply.
Well, the launcher opens but the game doesn't start, no error just stops running. It's just Torchlight II, other native games are fine. I can run Steam through terminal and write here the output but not sure that would help.

What "regert" said on the next post sounds reasonable. When attempting to launch something and behaves like that, sounds like a path issue or a missing library or both...
Try it and let's hope that it will work.

I tried that a couple days ago but didn't work somehow. After I manually put libfreetype.so.6 finally it works with the launch option. Weird.

If you're playing TL2 natively on Manjaro, there are 2 methods to get it running. You don't need to do both, just do 1:

Make a symlink of libfontconfig.so.1
$ ln -s /.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/amd64/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libfontconfig.so.1 /.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Torchlight\ II/lib64

or,

Go to TL2 > Properties > General > Set Launch Option:
LD_PRELOAD=~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/amd64/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libfontconfig.so.1 %command%

I check ProtonDB all the time, hence I tried what you write here. It didn't work that time. After I put the newest libfreetype.so.6 in Torchlight II's local files it worked with this launch option. It starts with windowed mode this way. I guess there is a problem with fullscreen for me. Windowed fullscreen is fine.

After days I tried, well, this was quick.

This perfectly demonstrates why I could never chose Linux as main desktop OS. I get best of both worlds with Windows for gaming etc and remote desktop to a Linux server.

I'm using Linux since the "dark" ages back in the 90s. Many attempted to make it user friendly and there were humongous changes since then, but unfortunately there is no way to completely avoid the command line. On the other hand, you do not have the atrocity called "Windows Registry" :)

Me too. Command line is great for playing Nethack etc tho.

For gaming, yes Windows is still better because games mostly created for Windows. With a compatibility layer like Proton, if I can play my games mostly as good as on Windows, I choose Linux over Windows for gaming too. There can be problems since there are tons of different systems out there and thinking Torchlight II is an old game and I needed some newer file to replace, it really not so different from Windows at that point.

Mostly is the key word, I just want to download my game from Steam and play it, not check what tweaks are needed for this game and particular version. Steam also just installs any missing dependancies without me needing to rename anything.

Well, it's a choice in the end. If you're happy with Windows, there is no need for Linux. However as a Linux user, Proton is a felicity and I'm happy that I can play my games on my operating system of choice. And it's getting better everyday. As for today, "mostly" (again) we don't need to deal with dependencies either, Steam handles them.

Like I said, I'm choosing to have both in the way that makes most sense. Why choose 1 with some problems when you can have both and do things where they are least problematic.

For most of the cases I'm completely agree with you. Though there are reasons I don't use Windows unless I have to. One of those reasons is privacy. So if I can do something on Linux, I don't use Windows. And I keep Windows installation only for two reasons. For games that I cannot play on Linux yet and for game developing.

It works fine for me without any tweaks on Debian.

Normally it should work that way but Arch-based distros always had to add a launch option for TL2. Though it seems my problem was more like a fullscreen issue with a font config problem. Could be related to i3 but not sure.

Glad to hear that you are able to play the game again! :)

I've not played Torchlight 2 yet, but I used to play Torchlight 1 all the time. I really enjoyed it. It took a while for me to find the old boot! ;)

Thank you. :)

I love Torchlight games and I love the makers are the same guys who made Diablo 1 & 2, even the composer which is a really good touch.
I'm sure you would love Torchlight 2, it's so much better than Torchlight 1 in so many aspects though there a little you may not like. I have only one thing that I don't like about Torchlight 2 which is gem combining. In Torchlight 1 you can combine the gems to make a bigger gem. But it's not like that in Torchlight 2 and I really miss that feature.

Anyway, have a nice day. ^^
