The one time I needed Steam support, they copy/pasted 2 different parts of a FAQ I already read, whoch did NOT answer my question.
Luckily the Steam forums are quite active and someone had found a solution to my problem already.
Steam is like Ikea: you get the best prices, but you need to do the rest on your own. :)

IKEA offers delivery and assembly if you pay them a bit more, but then again who will do that? People who buy stuff from IKEA are mostly cheapskates, including myself. :)

Same here. All the furniture I bought from IKEA were assembled by myself. Its not even hard. They come with very detailed idiot proof diagrams and instructions and even with tools like Allen keys to do the assembling. Don't see why is it so hard for others?

I know that feel bro, I only used steam support once, and had similiar experience. You are literally better off asking on forums or using google than writing to them. Irony, biggest virtual game store having worst support of them all, just hoping one day they finally realise its not good to save money on support

So your saying that because he was involved with whats causing the problem he gets a free pass at being a jerk? Frankly if I takes over a week to get a response and that response is "stop being a cheating dick" I would be pissed as hell.

well - support is a "customer service" - even if he had 1000 or 10000 fake "I was not cheating" replies in the past it doesn't change the fact that as a customer service he's facing clients on behalf of his employer - and even one unnecessary rude response means much more than 100s of polite ones. Because it's freaking job of customer service to be polite towards their customers. So him being nice is just doing his job. Him being rude plus falsely accusing user of cheating is just plain bad - doesn't matter if "he's usually nice guy".

I mean, I've done my share of support work in the past but I never got so famous that people would discuss my actions let alone know how long I've worked there and what I've been doing in that time.

It looks like your answering a question I didn't even ask but I'm a nice guy so I'll respond anyway. I get that he possibly gets tens or even hundreds of questions from cheaters but its bad form for him to simply assume that they are the problem and not with your service, especially if it takes a week and a half (seriously Valve you make how much money and you can't hire more support people, even just to filter out the garbage?) for you to respond. And no this one instance doesn't give him "history of being an asshole", Banning someone someone on a forum, opening a thread about it and releasing their name does. I did put myself in his shoes and I understand why he may of responded like that but I think onevoltz deserves an apology.

Your right I looked and it isn't onevoltz's ticket and your also right that a couple slip ups don't make you an asshole, but in my book the fact that it took over a week to respond and this was his response earned him an upgrade from jerk to low-tier asshole. Of course that's just my opinion and I will admit I am a bit biased after having been jerked around by the costumer support with both my phone and home security providers over the past year. Also your little what-if situation is as extreme as it is unrealistic.

It's unrealistic because the people that had there lives ruined did, whether truthfully or allegedly, a little bit more then be impolite when interacting with a customer and a normal support guy would have been fired for the shear number of complaints that would happen before people got organized enough to start such a campaign. So please put your slippery slope argument to rest.

First of all I was responding to your little slippery slope what-if scenario that's why I said more then one person. Secondly I never said they had to do anything outrageous just that it's incredibly unlikely a life ruining harassment campaign is going to start from little shit like what happened here.

Calling a fair user a cheater withourt running any background check (to find out if he was actually cheating or just system gave him false positive) is rude - doesn't matter what form you use. Other example - I decide to call you a thief. I may say "you're a fucking thief!" or I may say "I'm terribly sorry but I cannot help you, as you are a thief and our company policy doesn't allow us to help thieves". Even if second sentence is written politely it's still falsely accusing you, undermining your reputation, putting you together with criminals etc. Now tell me that you wouldn't mind someone calling you a thief just because he'd do it politely...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I wouldn't say that's really the same thing - I do see your point, and yeah, someone calling me a thief outright like that would be shocking and quite possibly rude but I think that depends on the situation and how it got to that point.

I don't agree with the support but I still wouldn't say it was rude, I'd be more likely to say that it was an ignorant response and he jumped to a conclusion.

Also, could this have been one of the automated responses they give the support to choose from?

Edit: Just to clarify, I don't think Steam support is the best, I just personally haven't had problems with them and don't think that was as serious as OP is making it sound. If anything I find it amusing at what a dumb response that was.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I honestly don't think Valve would give their support employee a copy-pasta response "Please uninstall your cheats." to choose from ;p And yeah - he was ignorant - but it doesn't mean that he couldn't be rude at the same time. He falsely accused someone of cheating - this is rude itself imho.

Also - I may be more critical of Steam Support, as I've had bad experiences with them before - at start of my time using Steam I bought a Super Meat Boy on sale for 2.5Eur - money was sent from MoneyBookers, but steam "didn't receive it" - after waiting 3 weeks for response they finally found the payment but informed me that "now game costs 10Eur and as you paid only 2.5 Eur we can only add this value to your wallet". Doesn't matter that it was paid to them when game costed 2.5Eur - took me 2 more months arguing with them, waiting at least 1.5 week for response each time etc. after after almost 3 months I finally got a game I paid for -.-

Eh, you may be right but I know there are a lot of places that have really stupid copy paste messages.

Also, I can see how that would leave a bitter taste in your mouth, I don't blame you for that either, I'd probably hate them too... especially that they denied you bought it cause the price raised...

I've had to deal with this Barton or "Ponylover Chestmullet" guy before. He embodies all that is wrong with Steam support. He thinks working for Valve = licence to be a cunt. And this is why the Steam and Gaben love gets on my tits. I like Steam a lot, it's great, but their support is totally unacceptable and manned by people who seem to believe they can talk to people however they like. I've given Steam thousands of dollars and I've been ignored, condescended to, had my time wasted and otherwise treated like shit by Steam support, Steam staff, and Steam mods. It's not cool, and when people go overboard with the Steam love and Gaben love, it makes me angry. Just because Steam has a lot of positives doesn't mean they can treat customers however they like.

Well to be honest, Counter-Strike: GLOBAL OFFENSIVE is known for having over 66% cheaters playing the game, the new generation youth who don't think it's fair they need to play against oldskoolers who almost are 30 years old and have 20 years of FPS-experience using a mouse and keyboard. Can't blame Steam/Valve for that answer.

I played CS since 1999 until 2007, a half year ago I bought CS:GO, after not playing any CS for over 7 years, the first match I played, I owned kids who have played CS:GO for over 2000 hours while I had 2 hours played, they will never be better. They played the last years 24/7 each day praccing with their clan and still getting owned by someone who hasn't touched a FPS-game for 7 years.
