I played both.

Play the remaster, it's better. Most people review it negatively, because they have trouble running it (crashs), but I haven't noticed any issues.

Original has better graphics imo. Also better atmosphere - because they removed a lot of things water related (wet floors, sinking windows and so on). Also original can work on now outdated pc without problems and remaster has shitty optimization. Also when I tried to play remaster of bs2 - it was crashing to desktop quite often (like 3 times during one hour) while original crashed maybe 2 times during whole game.

Seriously it's not only not needed remaster but also one of those lazily made.

Played the first game with the remaster, Never crashed, looked slightly better than the original, framerate was smooth. The audio was the only issue, but I am guessing that's also a problem in the OG version. I don't think there is any difference in gameplay.

If you're an achievement hunter, Bioshock 1 Remaster has achievements while the OG does not. On the other hand, many people report they've experienced a lot of crashes with the remaster. It's been a while, but I don't think I ran into many problems when I played it.

I played the OG, so can't compare it, but it ran nicely, so the only reason to play remaster would be for achvs.

I also played the OG BS2, even though at that time I could have chosen to play remaster. Again, I guess achvs might make a difference, as they cleaned up some of them in the remaster (MP-only ones I think)

I played the remastered version since the OG crashed and destroyed my saves.
It a very good game with good storyline.

I tried the original Bioshock first, but had no audio and couldn't find a working solution for that, The remaster needed an update for my win 7 and microsoft disabled the windows update function in their last update for that system. With some workarounds i could enable the update function again on my win 7 and so i could install the necesarry update i downloaded from github. You won't have this problem with win 10. Also the remaster has some nice achievements to collect.

I played both remaster versions with a few crashes. There are some really good guides on steam on how to run them minimazing the number of crashes. Bioshock 1 can be finished with a few occasional crashes. Bioshock 2 really needed that bugfix, because my game crashed whenever i tried to use a vending machine, sometimes even when i went to the main menu to save my progress. Afterwards i had as much crashes in 20 hours as i had in 2 before.

I just finished playing the Remaster a few weeks ago... Bioshock is still a fantastic game, even all these years after its original release. There's a reason so many others have imitated its mechanics. If you play the Remaster rather than the OG, I would recommend sitting through the Director's commentaries after you finish. I don't usually go in for that stuff, but I actually found it quite interesting.

As reported, there's a few stability issues. I found there was a fairly high risk of crashing whenever I opened the level map. If I avoided doing that, I avoided 99% of the crashes. Once, and only once, I experienced a crash-on-save that deleted my save game. I made sure to alternate save slots after that, but it turned out to be unnecessary.

I agree with you on the graphical presentation which oddly enough is a common opinion regarding remasters. I didn't have any technical troubles playing through the remaster though. I think they solved most of the issues early on but I may be misremembering things and I've just been lucky.

  • Remaster has higher resolution/better textures and achievements, but was less stable for me when I played it (near release date). Unsure if they ever fixed it. Oh and it also has a development museum like thing which was nice, and three dumb trails if that's your thing.
  • Original is more stable, but no achievements and lower resolution

Definitely the Remaster. It works flawlessly now, unlike its initial launch issues.
