It's improving, but the players are still CoDing all around the map, the devs are still lazy as fuck, zombies are still bugged as hell, payed hacks are still working...
Though you have the new "Colorado v2" servers, which are pretty good, as people can't use their GI and everyone starts with only a flashlight.
If you want a survival there are quite a number of options, I personally wouldn't choose that. I would even go for the old good DayZ before going for WarZ. And there is a new player in the board: Rust, from the same developers as Garry's Mod. I haven't tried it yet, but I will definitely do it.

You have loads of them. Most of them with zombies.
You have Arma II and Arma 3 mods: DayZ (Arma II) and Dead Nation (Arma III) (the original zombie survival, with lots of different maps and mods of the mod - inception much...-) or Wasteland (survival, without zombies, but with two sides (blue and red) and an independent party (green). It's a bit more fast paced than DayZ and the rest of survivals and not that much oriented to finding gear and crafting objects.
DayZ Standalone should be released soon(ish...) but has been delayed a couple of times. This one looks really promising.
You have "Dead Linger" (haven't played).
You have "7 Days to Die" in alpha state, mix of minecraft with DayZ: crafting, surviving, destroying things, making a stand in some house. It looks OK.
You have "How To Survive". Quite new, I haven't played it yet.
Then you have plenty of mods for other games, such as GTA SA, Crysis 2, some minecraft servers...
If you and your friends just want a survival I can't tell you what to choose because they all look pretty much the same but for a couple of things.
If you also want the best military simulator ever, go for Arma 2 or Arma 3 (I personally prefer the latter, but some people prefer the 2nd) and install the mods (plenty of info on how to do it, plus some very useful tools). To play DayZ the best is Arma II, and then download the mods (you have DayZ, DayZ+, DayZ Origins... and many more islands to play with). The community is quite good, and with all the different mods there will be for sure one that fits you.

If you don't mind the fact that it is still an alpha, then you could try The Dead Linger.

Well, if you want to play a survival game, buy Arma II: CO and download the DayZ mod. :D

Steam has not yet made a 75% off sale for ARMA 2. DayZ standalone still lack of a release date but it shouldn't need many months. I bet ARMA will go on sale soon.

I'm really looking for a survival game to play with friends, and well, I know this game was a huge flop, but I'm wondering if they did something about it in the end.
