From what I read, "just OK" is quite the praise for it, as it is said it's boring and with bunch of bugs for flavor and overall big step down from SR.

The last part is the key. SR was really really really good, so people expected similar levels of quality; "just so-so" was extremely disappointing, especially given that the same people made SR4, which was so similar in concept that it's hard to see how they screwed this up.

If I remember correctly SR4 was already pretty far along in development before THQ shut down. Perhaps some key staff did not come along when the development moved to Deep Silver?

Could also be that Deep Silver enforced different design priorities?

Maybe. It's also possible they just wanted to do something different and screwed it up.

I mean... SR4 started out as a SR3 mod, and still inherited a lot from it. And SR3 was in many ways almost a remake or elaboration on SR2. I can see people just saying "all right, we've been polishing the same game for almost ten years, let's do something different."

I mean... look at Mass Effect: Andromeda, which was a similar situation. Yeah, partially it was shifting to a different team, but they also had a lot of new ideas (some of which, like a massive procedural galaxy, sounded really cool) that didn't pan out and which damaged the end result by wasting time. Sometimes you can take an established formula, tinker with it just a bit or have just a few issues in development, and the whole thing just falls apart.

OTOH I wouldn't want just endless reiterations of SR3/4 or the Mass Effect trilogy forever. They gotta try new things now and then, which sometimes, unfortunately, means failures.

(And, of course, SR1 wasn't anything particularly special - so perhaps they'll make a more polished sequel to this that gets everything right. Who knows.)

I was 100% sure this game was multiplayer only. But the store only lists single player. Have I been bamboozled? If it's single player only, it's worse than I thought.

SP only and it was supposed to be that way when they annouced it first time.

Well, then making this Saints Row "rip off" makes even less sense. Why not just make a proper Saints Row game? In my head, the excuse was because of it being a multiplayer mmo sorta thing.

It was a 3rd person shooter version of what Trine did. No reason to do more SR games.
It's good that they try new things...

This game is like this robot

Volition, the studio behind Agents of Mayhem, laid off over 30 people including general manager Dan Cermak.
The studio previously had around 200 employees.

These layoffs come one month after the release of Agents of Mayhem, an action game set in the same world as Volition’s longrunning Saints Row series.
Deep Silver, the publisher and parent company of Volition, was unhappy with Agents of Mayhem’s sales. (Although video game publishers do not publicly share their sales data, UK sales charts painted a bleak picture for the game.)

Jim Boone returns amid layoffs at Saints Row creator as studio development director.
He had been part of the Volition family for most of its life.
He was there in 1994 when it was part of Parallax, working in QA on the publishing side on the likes of Descent and Descent II.
He witnessed Parallax split into Volition and Outrage, and became a producer on the FreeSpace series.
He witnessed the birth of Red Faction and Saints Row, acting as one of the company's main spokespeople, before leaving 18 months ago for a role at League of Legends creator Riot Games.

Most reviews said that it was just so-so. Not completely terrible, but a disappointment compared to SR3 and especially SR4, which is more like what people were expecting.

What did you expect? Didn't you see how the Saints Row franchise ended up? Saints Row 2 was great and then they made some comedic bullshit games. So, their newest game would obviously be bad too, wouldn't it? :/

SR 3 & 4 are really fun and were kinda successful, not sure why their new game MUST be bad.

SR 3 and 4 are as much fun as sitting on rusty nails while listening to Justin Bieber. They went from a totally awesome game with a detailed storyline (Saints Row 2) to some crappy comedy 'Murican games (Saints Row 3 and 4). Screw them for ruining an awesome franchise. If I wanted some "brainless fun", I would play with marbles. Although it's true they're successful - because people can't understand the difference between a quality game and a stupid one. That's exactly why some hidden gems remain hidden for ever, while some shitty games get easily sold for 20-60 euros.

Well as you said, they're comedic, they're not meant to be taken seriously story-wise and were originally meant to be spin-offs. They even called it "the third" instead of 3 and IV was originally going to be called "Enter the Dominatrix" but at that point the devs realised that they didn't had any intention of going back to the original story.
Not every sequel has to be just as its predecesors, if it was that way then we wouldn't have masterpieces like Resident Evil 4 or Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance that mostly broke with tradition and ended up being great because of that.

Thing is, they weren't great games. They didn't have to be like Saints Row 2. They at least had to be decent. But, as you said, I can't take them seriously. I can't even consider them to be games. I had more fun while playing flash games when I was a kid (like the frog in a blender game). In Saints Row 2, we saw a capable competitor of GTA. In Saints Row 3 and 4, we saw 2 jokes?!

Let's just agree to disagree, otherwise this will turn into an endless loop. I respect your point of view that they're jokes, but the thing is that I laughed at those jokes so it is hard for me to see them as something bad or harmful.
Anyway, if the dev studio manages to survive this failure they may reconsider going back to their roots so there's a chance that you get a direct sequel to SR2 at some point in the future. Spoiler! They stablished time travel as being a thing during the credits of SRIV so a rewrite of the whole story is not outside of the realm of possibility.

That's sad, they probably shouldn't have dropped the Saints Row name, at least that would have meant some extra sales.
