Looking for a decent gaming laptop(LoL, Lotro, L4D2) for my girlfriend, which of these is the more powerful? I don't really understand the differences between the GPUs and CPUs.

(Site is in swedish "Specifikation" tab = specs )

  1. HP

Processor- AMD A6
Model- A6-5350M
Cores- 2
Speed(GHz) - 2,90
Max Clock speed (GHz) - 3.5

Dedicated GPU - AMD Radeon HD 8670M 1GB

  1. Packard Bell

CPU Intel Core i5 (3:e gen.) 3210M / 2.5 GHz
Max Clock speed - 3.1 GHz
Cores - 2

GPU - NVIDIA GeForce GT 620M - 1 GB DDR3 VRAM

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

EDIT: Found another laptop,

  1. Lenovo B590, with an i5 and a dedicated geforce GT 720m 1gb

I can't see the specs on the HP ( the site is not loading ), but the other one is pretty good. ( and by "pretty good" I mean I wish I had one of those )

I'll be honest and tell you that I'm not familliar with AMD processors. I've been using only Intel tech and it works pretty good for me, since I need a good performance in gaming and image processing. From my experience, I recommend it.

Never ever ever buy an HP anything. They are cheap for a reason.

If you buy an HP, you will only have yourself to blame.

That's a pretty general statement... and not very informative.

Hp is good; Toshiba, and E machines are both shit.

I know i know, overheats like a mother, but not if you treat them right with a cooling pad(or so i hope)

This. Wouldn't touch a HP computer with a stick. When in doubt, get a ThinkPad.

I would go with the HP, the graphics card in it is marginally better, as for the CPU they are a fairly close call on performance.

EDIT: The price difference makes the HP even better, they are not cheaply built laptops please don't mind g00u :P

+1 (although u won't get nvidia technologies)

Good point and I'm an Nvidia fan myself but the GT620m is comparable to an HD7670M so the HD8670M in the HP is good step up.

I have a discount code that makes them the same price, hence my dilemma :P

I'd definitely go with #1, cheaper and overall slightly more powerful.

Get a good cooling pad though, you will need it :P

CPU is processing power for general use. GPU is processor dedicated to graphic (Games!, also for physic for some game with Physx, TressFX) and video encode, decode in some case.
So normally you don't use GPU. Use it a bit when watch some video but good-bad gpu performance don't make any different.

Edit: AMD APU + Discrete in the first one may use Dual Graphic which I'm not quite sure exactly how they work. I normally use Intel+nvidia.

his girlfriend is going to play (LoL, Lotro, L4D2) (quoted) I would go with the laptop which has a stronger GPU than CPU.
I think that the one with the better GPU (the first one) would have higher frames per second (FPS) compared to the second one generally (for L4D2; LoL isn't an intensive game anyway)

True. For game, GPU is a lot more important than CPU. I even discovered that Core i3 is often enough. The real bottle-neck is GPU (except MineCraft that we even have to set it up on a Xeon server)
I'm a dorm student and I always use laptop for games. We all play on mid-high for laptops.

Their resolution is low, so at the end it does not matter how much their CPU/GPU is more powerful. They both have 5400 rpm crappy HDD, go games will load slow. Replace it with an SSD and select which one looks more beautiful since it will be for your g/f.

PS: in general speaking, GPU is responsible for drawing. The better GPU, the faster/sharper/nicer graphics you have. SPU handles everything else (bots, bullet/shrapnel/debris trajectories, rolling dices, ...). The more powerful CPU, the smoother game play you have for most games.

PS-2: Until recently, I've suggested one simple formula for every computer buyer. The higher the number, the better, except price of course. For example: 9800GT is better than 8800GT. Recently they (manufacturers) have discovered this technique and exploited it. now GTX 780 is like GTX 690.

PS-2 not true. GTX 580m is better than GT 620m.
How it's done is to not count the first digit (which is series/gen digit). Other digit go the same way you say (higher is better, not directly comparable across manufacturer).

For example, back in the day, GF 7900GS vs 8400GS. First, cut off the first digit so it's 900 vs 400, but 8400GS is one gen ahead of 7900 so give 8400 a little boost.
Say, bump 400 to 550, 900 vs 550, 900 still win. GF 7900GS win the 8400GS
But GeForce 8000 series support DirectX10 while 7000 doesn't. That's the part where series number play some important role.

I would go for the HP one, but that one is still far from being a "decent gaming laptop". The overall performances are quite equal and it's a tad cheaper. The GPUs (grafikkortet!) on both are basic entry level ones. Also both have slow harddrives (try to find one with 7200rpm or better a SSD one) Both also have low resolution screens (good thing with that is that the GPU might be able to handle games better, bad thing..well..it's low res :)

Sure they (HP) have had their fair share of heating problem, but to be honest they have become better. Also most heating problems (in any laptop) can be prevented by treating the computer nice (and also by giving it a nice cooling pad) I would however try to find a laptop with aluminum chassi instead of a plastic one. That helps to transfer heat away and normally adds a bit more stability (as in build quality) to the computer. sometimes cheap plastic computers have horrible and flexing keyboards

That PB is a big no for me, cause Packard Bell is since a handful of years owned by Acer, and PB is one of their "cheaper brands" Acer themselves are not known for their good quality to begin with (at least on the step-in models of the Aspire series) so I wouldn't pick a PB ever.

I would also recommend you on looking for a ASUS laptop as an alternative (preferably a aluminum one)

Lenovo is a good brand isn't it?

Yes better brand. But the graphics from the HP are still better. HP and Acer are the chapest brands, Packard bell too. But I would prefer the HP. Really good brand are Sony, MSI, Asus, Samsung.

How much better exactly is the AMD Radeon HD 8670M? I can't seem to find any reliable info on the subject :P

Yes it's better, the 8670M is middle class GPU and the 720m/620m are entry level, so they are not good.

But if you have more money, buy a better brand, like Sony, Asus, Samsung or at least Dell, Lenovo is good too.

EDIT: in my opnion better to buy the Lenovo, because as I see they offer you a 4Gb RAM memory stick for more price, this makes the same price as the Packard Bell, and the 720m is newer than 620m, for the games you mentioned they will run decently, I mean the 8670m is not that much better, so you will have 8Gb of RAM + better processor, that is good, HP costs less, but I do not recomend you buying any HP or Acer laptops, because of their quality. Just because "Cheap is often more expensive"

A truly "gaming laptop" will cost you a lot more, MSI or Alienware for example are the more popular laptop gaming brands.

Thanks. I think I've decided on the Lenovo as well. And I don't fance the HP catching fire and burning the house down when I'm not looking, so there's that.
It's not meant to run BF4 on ultra, just enough for it to play some older games. Seems like a good fit.

Thanks for the help! I feel more confident about the purchase now :)

As I saw on the link that provided the guy below, the 720m can run BF4 on medium settings :), not 1080p obviously, but weren't talking about 1080p anyway. Lenovo is a good brand, even looking at the plastic of HP laptops, they don't give me confidence.

Lenovo is a good brand yes! Still when it comes to performance all these computers are rather equal (some are better than the others on a few things, but not as good on other things). I would say that the "gaming performance" is rather equal. All three have low res screens, slow harddrives and so on.

Where do you live? Do you have a Siba close to you? If so go check a lenovo and hp (and also a asus) laptop out. They might not have the ones you listed but they do have the same "chassis" so you can take a look at them and how they feel (keyboard, build quality, where ports are located and so on)

If you want to see a Packard Bell, asus, hp you might also go to a Media Markt, but they don't usually have that many Lenovos

Elgiganten also have PB and Hp.

Not saying that those are cheaper or better deals, but it's a good way to "feel" the computer, because the build quality (especially the keyboard) is important for gaming!

Here's a site where you could compare different cpus/gpus - >example comparing GT 720 (Lenovo) with the 8760 card (HP)

If you want a gaming laptop the most important spec is the graphics card. If you want to run the latest games at settings from low to medium you have to go for a Nvidia GT740M or a AMD Radeon HD8750M. All the laptops you listed will run the games you listed, but not the latest games. It depends on what your girlfriend wants.

I also have a list of very good laptops you should check out here.
