i know of quite a few who could easily fall for it, there are those out there... sadly

If stuff like this didn't work, my Facebook home feed wouldn't be littered with spam daily of "click here to see blabla", "You won't believe what blabla did to blabla", etc., etc.

I got this message a few minutes ago, i clicked on it but then i looked at the link and saw the .tk^^ Well i didnt fill in my account information and closed the tab, but i changed my password now again, because i dont wanna loose my account :O

What 'friend' would send you this crap on Steam anyways?
Since you can't SPIM people on Steam unless they're your friend, that pretty much means your friend's account has to be compromised and sending these messages? I'd be much more concerned about your 'friends' account being suspended/banned for this behavior if they have been taken over by a bot or some kind.
Am I correct in that assessment?

A friend was too stupid, he opened the link hoping to get a free game, and got his account hijacked. He's probably sobbing in some corner now. It's not the friend who sent me the message, it's the hijacker using my friend's account. What is so complicated about that?

You do realize Steam Guard is there to prevent exactly this kind of spam, right? And that Steam Connect is there so you can login to websites with your steam account without entering your password, right?
It's like downloading an app that says "Hey, this app is not a virus, but please disable your antivirus and firewall to install it!"... only so much we programmers can do against stupid people.

It probably asks you to turn it off at one point. I wouldn't do it, you wouldn't do it, but people would. I don't know why, but they would. It's like saying, "Let me borrow your cellphone to make a call, but you'll have to stay away, it's a private call".

well it really seems like very interesting STEAM Virus to me, anyway.. if this app can take control of you sending msgs to your friends, it ussualy means you already lost your account details :/ I suggest changing passwords + emailpassword + secondary email adress details
Im quite sure we will see ton of "steam accounts for sale" :// CHANGE PASSWORDS GUYS ASAP!

Yeah, once a hacker had control over my pc and opened the cd-drive, wrote funny things and shut my pc down. Today they only have bots etc, but i want to talk and laugh with them again :O

Or that its an extremely easy one to do, regardless of how comparatively successful it is.

Really, this is a scam? Oh well, it doesn't even matter if someone steals my stuff now. I just got an email from a Nigerian prince who needed my help, and after sending him some money as collateral he's going to pay me back with a million dollars! I'll buy all the games I want!
Comment has been collapsed.
Funny, I got the same e-mail... My prince's name is Prince Rajah. I thought it was odd that a Nigerian prince had an Indian name, but maybe his parents were open minded. Doesn't matter to me, I've got millions of dollars coming to me! W00T!

[sarcasm]Thanks to http://steamxxxxxxxxxhappyhour.tk I got all the stuff I never want.[/sarcasm]

Should we post the user's accounts to know who to be away from? It could help some people out.
Comment has been collapsed.
Should we report those accounts on Steam, then. Not really sure since it's possible the account might have been just stolen.

Thank you http://steamxxxxxxxxxhappyhour.tk, now I don't worry more about steam games, because my account is GONE! [yeah, this is sarcasm]

I see people asking stupid questions about .sfv and .iso files. Such as what they are for, how to open them etc. Even what does it mean to "unzip" a file.
I am not at all surprised about people falling for links or vids saying they should send their passwords to whatever site or email.
Heck, I remember the old days when it showed that hacking a hotmail account meant sending YOUR account to whatever mail.
P.S. anyone remember the days of the I LOVE YOU virus sent via IRC with Love_Letter_For_You.htm ? Those were the days :)
The internet doesn't have an age limit. So a 12 year old could really wish and hope for something free... just look at game admins that are < 19 that ban you for stupid reasons. (ok rant off) Point is, don't be surprised that people fall for it. Back in the old win 95 days you had to remove a virus manually since there weren't as many (or as sophisticated) antiviruses (not to mention lack of internet). Same with installations. You had to manually install each driver before Plug N Play went into action. Point is, veterans find this common sense now, so a "strange funny looking link" seems suspicious, but to newcomers that think installing a card means plugging it in, putting a cdrom in the drive and letting the OS do everything for them means installing, that have no idea of common dos commands (or how to remove a virus manually), a link such as www.free_steam_games_for_you_but_it_means_i_steal_your_steam_account.xxx is a legit site.
Remember the new generation is not that wise (no offense meant, but with all the automation you get, it's no surprise)
[second rant off]

This is definitely a fair statement. Although people are trying to keep the younger generations educated to issues like this as much as they can, it just never seems to be enough. It really should be common sense to be skeptical of any site that claims you can get free things (hell, I didn't think this site was legit when my friend first told me about it), but there's always going to be people out there who are willing to throw common sense out the window to be able to cling on to the dream that they are lucky enough to randomly be chosen to get something for absolutely nothing.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well I'd not open that for many other reasons. People just need common sense, too bad they don't sell that online.

I can assure you that Steam users got something exactly like this last year.

I have recently been contacted by a friend on steam, he sent me this.
"Breaking News !!!
It's the Steam Happy Hours! You can get your really free game now with the link below : http://steamxxxxxxxxxhappyhour.tk
Hurry up it's an Exclusive offer for limited time !
Don't forget to say Thanks !"
Now. I know not to open that site for various reasons. First is .tk, second is, I've seen that format on plenty of other scamjobs. Come here, get a free game, don't forget to say thanks.
Beware that, if you do open it, what happens is, it asks you to log in to steam, you try doing it, but it gives you an error (There's actually no error, it's just meant to look like one while it steals your password). Somewhere in between, you'll be asked to disable your steam guard. What happens then is, it tells you that your steam account has been logged in from somewhere else, and that you are logged out. After that, a majority of your friends, online ones, get a message in the format presented above. Do not be stupid and fall for this. There is no free game.
Yours truly,
Ghost.
EDIT: Blanked out the link for safety reasons.
