Seems like they're removing alternate inventories, though.

Funny how people aren't throwing a shitstorm over this, because if this was EA, a coup d'état would have been started already.

What is your definition of coal farming?
They're clamping down on people who made multiple accounts to get lots of stuff from the free achievements. That's what we're talking about. And they have every right to do so because the contest rules state that only one account per person may enter. Everyone who has coal on multiple accounts is fair game to be disqualified from the contest.

"One manual entry per Holiday Sale Objective, one Steam account per entrant, and one Epic Holiday Giveaway win per user."
What makes you think Valve doesn't have the right to hand out smackdowns?
Comment has been collapsed.
They do, actually. The Terms of service of every event, says you can't use more than one account.
Comment has been collapsed.
Whazze, they have all the right to ban you for whatever reason they feel like it; it's in their terms of use that you and everybody else has accepted that they will disable your account without prior notice deem they find it suspicious.

All I have for valve coupons is a 33% off, but I'm still glad to see that Valve is (trying) to crack down on the abusers. It's bad for business when some users cheat the system to get a thousand free entries and a large portion of the participation prizes for your holiday sweepstakes; kind of makes sponsors think twice about supporting such an event again. Not that that would be a bad thing considering the overall response.
Comment has been collapsed.
They HAVE to be banned or disqualified, as they would be in legal hot water if they didn't. Also, I don't know how you can justify giving people an unfair advantage unless you are farming yourself, in which case I hope this thread becomes a giant honeypot. . . .

"Because of their potential for abuse, sweepstakes are heavily regulated in many countries."
Great read if you are uneducated. The FTC CAN come down on you if Valve so chooses. I think they should imo.
Comment has been collapsed.
Because...they ran the gift pile out of non-Valve games and made the great giveaway barely worth entering? I doubt Valve has picked up on all of them. The giveaway would have been so much better if cheating people hadn't made things worse for the rest of us.
That's why we're hating.
Looking at your inventory, you're likely one of these people.
Comment has been collapsed.
they'll get them. They are using a programn to find the accounts that have humble indie bundles to start account. some scammers are stupid. If you one of them right now reading this Really stupid. feel that sweat as you rush to your account each time waiting for them to find you ummm . . . yeah I'll stop.

This is the thread for reference.
And Steam has every right to ban them, most people don't understand what the Steam Subscriber Agreement is.
Comment has been collapsed.
It's not illegal for VALVE to ban users. VALVE are located in the US, which makes THEIR rules apply, no matter where you are. Simple as that, they have EVERY right to ban you. You even agreed to have your account closed at any point if they think you're doing anything illegal;
"Valve may terminate your Account or a particular Subscription for any conduct or activity that Valve believes is illegal, constitutes a Cheat, or which otherwise negatively affects the enjoyment of Steam by other Subscribers."
Comment has been collapsed.
Actually you're wrong. For example, Valve operates Steam in the UK, which a registered UK store. This store is bound by UK laws, which take precedent over the eula and subscriber agreement. If you go looking you can find sources of people demands refunds in the uk, with valve telling them to gtfo, and they simply state some laws in the UK protecting them, and valve are forced to refund their money, even though there is nothing in the US that binds valve to this. By operating as a registered business overseas valve are bound to that countries laws. If you're in the EU, subscriber agreements and EULA's mean ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, courts have a precedent of chucking them out and will continue to do so.
tl;dr = "VALVE are located in the US, which makes THEIR rules apply, no matter where you are."

Valve is based in Bellevue, Washington. He was saying that the Steam storefront is registered in the UK as a licensed distributor of digital content, just like it is in the US, and is therefore subject to the laws in the United Kingdom as well. I don't know how the court system works in the UK so I'm taking Mir's word for it, but it's appalling that they would just disregard the EULA and subscriber agreement.
Comment has been collapsed.
then I'm mistaken. but as for laws, it depends. if a Eula breaches the set laws of a country then there is no standing of rules. Like the expiry date on valves coupons is against the law here in Canada, but that's minor. That's also why most people can't get games on steam. but no mater what country you are from coal farming would be classified as stealing or even fraud.
Comment has been collapsed.
Mir you are basing your argument over an image you saw that is in no way related to what is going on at the moment.
You do not live in the UK and should not spread misinformation based on assumptions, and bias; because you're a coal farmer aswell.

/Care
At every platform, game, community... there are always people who abuse the system.
and come on, a 10 week ban??? Even i would use 500000 steam accounts for farming, if the only consequence would be a 10 week ban xD

A friend told me that SAM is not even working for winter achievements.
Comment has been collapsed.
I actually did it with Crimecraft (not planning on downloading a 11gb game for one achievement honestly), the program worked fine and the achievement was registered without an issue.
There are few server side achievements at the moment.
Comment has been collapsed.
People have used SAM for a very long time. I have yet to hear anyone get banned for it. Multiple accounts.. well look at TF2. There are people with 50 accounts farming. Valve doesn't care. Once you started cheating at their event to receive more gifts that angered almighty Gaben.
Comment has been collapsed.
While Valve doesn't ban for using SAM, I do understand that they are beginning to implement serverside achievements. Perhaps, by the next event, SAM will be rendered mostly useless.
In case someone wants sauce, the best that I can offer is to direct you to gibbed's SAM site.
Comment has been collapsed.
While SAM doesn't get your account suspended as quickly as coal farming; it grants you a disqualification for the final draw. Steam will also reset all of your stats and prevent you from participating in future events case they find out you've been using any scripts or macro in order to complete the holiday objectives; which is stated in the rules.

If Valve couldn't tell the difference between coal farming and friends giving coal to each other, they wouldn't have made the damn stuff tradable. Give them some credit, will you?
Comment has been collapsed.
I have the same issue. My mother has her own account that she only uses for Bejeweled. She got all the basic stuff, and gave it to me because... well, what else would she do with it? Bejeweled is about the most advanced game she can play, so if she won all of them, they'd only go to waste. As did everything else she won. But oh well.
Comment has been collapsed.
she's on a different ip and you aren't using cheats to get achievements. It's if you have like 2-150 accounts and have abused their system. There are people who have created multiple accounts and have gathered like 300 coal to get free games and steal from others. IE coal trades for games and such. That's the issue. Not getting extra coal or trading for coal but coal farming.
Comment has been collapsed.
still on a diff ip, you have you server ip and your comp ip. that and you don't have user: gibob then user gibob1 all the way to whatever. you don't have to worry unless you would've gone out of your way to scam steam. Trust me if you were coal farming you'd know.
Comment has been collapsed.
I asked my cousin to give me all his coal (5 in all) in return for 2 games when I was over at their house. So that would be the same IP then? :'( Now it is going to be counted as farming :( Oh God, why did I trade for his coal...
Comment has been collapsed.
it's more the users created from the same ip. it's not hard to figure out guys. If you have two different legit accounts there's game time logged and games and movement of ip sometimes. Trust me the people who wre coal farming are easy, really easy to spot crazy fluke scenarios need not apply. trading isn't farming.
Comment has been collapsed.
Are you certain? :( I am really freaking out here... Any update on this?
Comment has been collapsed.
yeah they are only going after the people with multi account and hib with sam really. Trading is ok by the rules, they let us trade. you might fins a bunch of coal or games go missing if you traded with a farmer. I doubt it I think they'll charge the farmers for what they stole. why should an honest player get harmed for doing something legit?
Comment has been collapsed.
Ummm, hey guys, I have 150 brothers and sisters and we all live in the same house so we have the same ip. They only play games from the indie bundle and they all signed up 2 days after the event started. They don't want their free coals or games so they trade it to me. You think Valve will mistake me for a farmer?
Comment has been collapsed.
:O God, how many mothers do you have (no woman can give birth to that many children)?! How big is your house?! It's like a company over there then, everyone with their little cubicle?

Valve saw the coal farming and responded accordingly.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mx1IFy4m1YE
Valve has traditionally (and I think still is) very smart about business decisions, and I would stand behind this one as well. Nobody with 15+ steam accounts with a bunch of $0.01 humble bundle games who was hacking achievements should be surprised by this, and frankly I'm surprised the bans won't be longer.
Comment has been collapsed.
a lot of scammers started to be trade banned lately after the plethora of scams going on. It might not be related to farming, though it ,s certainly possible.
Comment has been collapsed.
Coal farming groups began recruiting members on this site since the promotion started. Members gave their coal to one person, and that person crafted and then made a giveaway for the game. Other people have been buying coal legitimately and have over 500, according to Steam Trades. How would Steam discern this from one person farming coal into their own account? There are about four million Steam users according to the website, and they'd have to cross-check every IP address to find out which people farmed into their own account, just to trade ban them for 10 weeks. It's more likely that people registering hundreds of games into their accounts are the ones getting banned, like that "woman" who had 1,001 games and ~5,800 screen shots.
I don't condone exploitation of the service, but realistically, I don't think even half of the coal farmers will be banned. There are just too many accounts to go through.
Comment has been collapsed.
One IP address creating hundreds of accounts, adding them all as friends on one account, looking at the trade history seeing coal and coupons and games being sent all to one main account.
Comment has been collapsed.
lol at all you coal farmers. cya next year. oh wait a sec... nevermind
:D
Comment has been collapsed.
It's not about them getting games and other people don't. It's the fact that they exploited the system by creating multiple accounts and abused it, it's probably why on the last day they ran out of 3rd party games and coupons. They deserve to be banned. No mercy.
Comment has been collapsed.
Valve punished about 40% of the coal farmers. Looks like a lot of people like this guy http://steamcommunity.com/id/ca89ra/friends didn't lose his games in the inventory and get trade ban.
Comment has been collapsed.
wait, they ran out of 3rd party games and coupons? wish I hadn't waited to get the achievements till the last day then :( and I worked my full 18 hours on both Saturday and Sunday just to get 4 more achievements :(
