Depending on how long ago it was, I may have forgotten, but that doesn't mean my reasons for blacklisting someone aren't rational for me. So telling you would be pointless. And telling you I forgot will not get it removed.
As far as I'm concerned, people wanting to know why they're blacklist is basically just "why doesn't this random person I don't know not like me."

If I blacklist someone, it's likely not something you can fix. Since it tends to be a personality problem. Other people tend to blacklist for other reasons, like making sure their giveaways aren't being won by the same group of people, etc. On top to that, no one should need to keep a mental note of why they blacklisted someone just because that someone might want to ask if they found out. Otherwise, if you're blacklisting for silly reasons that you can't be confident about having blacklisted someone after forgetting the reason. Then you're using the feature incorrectly.

So you're basically saying that if you can't be sure you'd never make a mistake you shouldn't use blacklists. I can't say that I agree. Anyone can blacklist for whatever reason they feel like but people have as much right to ask about the reasons behind those blacklists. Not that I would care enough but some people are willing to make a lot of effort to be on good terms with as many as possible.

Pretty much, the point of a blacklist is to cut communication with an individual. Blacklisting people for "funsies" or because of poor/weak reasons is a waste of the feature. And with the change to a reciprocal blacklist, such frivolous blacklisting can negatively affect the individual balcklisting.

imo only if it were linked to a giveaway. the capability to PM can only occur from a gifter to a winner, without the need of a comment on the giveaway.
(basically winners see comments of giveaways they've won in the "comments" section of said giveaway in their inbox // but it would need to auto disable this feature for 5+ copies)

You're right of course. This is a long overdue enhancement which would really improve the website. Its advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. Like many other great enhancements that cg added this year, he'll probably add this too when schedule allows. I can't believe he considers posting-to-one's-old-GAs the messaging system that this site needs.

I see your point beacuse it´s a tempting idea as long as everybody shows good manners but unfortunatly there´s no place in the internet where everybody shows good manners. Not even on SG. I'll concede the 1st point if you tell me that you actually derived joy from that "private" messaging incident. Most people I know would feel badly about it, which is why I wrote "didn't work so well for you", but I can't read your mind so shouldn't assume. If you enjoyed it, sure, it worked great for you.
I won't concede the second point. Anyone who witnessed how things played out would say that both members would still likely be with us if a proper private messaging system was used.

I can see benefit in this - though on here the issues at hand (such as others have pointed out) would make things problematic. Perhaps there could be some form of approval: "userxxxx wishes to send you a private message, do you accept?" - to aid in filtering the flim flam bad mamma jam?!
Edit: and for that matter, perhaps PMs should be "opt in" - those that dont want, wont get at all.

Really, it's quite okay IMO. I think everyone knows we have limited ways to make contact and understands how some people will add you just to talk about a particular matter, and then remove you once the exchange is over.
Also, another way is to set up a temporary e-mail and display it in your profile description. That's what I do (although not may people actually use it...)

I know there's no rational reason to avoid kicking Steam friends once the discourse is over, but I still don't like it.
Using old GAs (or even responding to people's old comments in old GA not created by them) is the workaround I'm currently using, but it's far from optimal. Much drama was caused by people who used it and thought they are having a "private" discussion.

This is asking for spam and trouble - No need to elaborate on why and how (well, mostly because it's late and I'm going to bed). Basically, Steam messaging is already a perfect option, because you won't receive messages from people you don't want to add. At best, SG should have an option to request to send a PM to a user, and the user can decide whether or not they accept the request to message them. Anything else is, as I mentioned before, just a shit show of spam.

Cue everyone who comes across as being even remotely female getting a slew of unwanted attention. At least if the messages have to be publically visible we can point and openly mock those who show all the flirting skills of a 10 year old.
And of course as others have pointed out, you'll also get a lot of spam from people marketing their RPG maker asset flips, begging for steam keys and trying to run scams. Fine if they add it, but at least give us the option to opt out then.

Hmm ok. So the fact that some girls, 'might' like that means it's OK for random guys to do this to any girl they encounter, even on a website that has nothing to do with dating at all? And it doesn't even have to be sexual in nature to harrassing. I've got a few friends who just don't even let anyone know they are girls anymore online, because the minute they do they start getting 'hey beautiful' messages in their inbox from desperate guys, or those looking for a side chick. Yeah most girls on the internet are probably so used to the comments that they've learned to ignore or mock, but I don't think this website needs to open up another way for anyone to be harassed.
It's not even with the weird pervy comments guys feel it's ok to send to girls (or those they think are girls), but this is a relatively inclusive community, with a huge cross section of society which means people are going to disagree with each other on points of culture, religion and sex, and I just think that private messaging is opening up a can of worms. There are other means of getting in touch with someone already (add them on steam, request an audience on one of their private giveaways), all of which leave it as a mutual decision, so why add something that is just asking to be abused? Hence why I say the only way the feature should ever be allowed is if it has an opt out.

It's not about protecting females, it's about not giving those who have a tendency to harass people who are different to them, (not just females) the tools they need to harass people in private. The fact that people can defend themselves or don't need protection from trolls, doesn't mean automatically that having to do those things is something that people signing up for this site want to do, considering the main focus is ultimately on giving and getting games. Adding it will mean either a lot more moderation for the overworked team or having decent people leave because they get tired of harassment. Doesn't seem to me that the benefits private messaging would offer could outweigh that, especially when there are already enough ways to get in touch with people.

Eh sorry about that. But as I say, I know from second hand experience (ie: people close to me) how awful people can be and how getting those kind of messages really got to friends I cared about, that I just don't think it's a good idea. This site is not billed as a social platform, so a lot of people just come here for the games. It's different to a dedicated forum where you are signing up for the purpose of discussion and interaction. The site is also not age restricted, and I know of a few who are under 18, who came here to try and win free games. It just seems like an unnecessary risk to allow strangers to message each other purely on the basis of being members of the same giveaway site. So the only way it could ever work is if it was purely optional, and the number of people that would chose to opt in probably wouldn't warrant the effort required to add a PM system.

Really not into the whole SJW thing personally, but being married to a person of the female variety who is quite attractive, I know how awful private messaging can be, even when it's clear the person is not interested in chatting and doesn't have any photos posted that show what she looks like. A point made in one of the comments above is that this is mostly useful between a giveaway creator and a winner, and I do think that's something that makes sense for that purpose, so a messaging system private between those two people would be good while closing a big concern about spam for a site-wide PM system.

What if you could comment on a giveaway on your won and send page, this way only winner and sender see the comment. I don't really think there's the need for PMs other than solving problems with giveaways.

Private messages. This way if a user needs to get in touch with another and they are having difficulties, PM's might help.
IE- a user gives the wrong game or doesn't activate your GA he/she/it won, you can contact and ask politely without going through the process of emailing or trying to add them as a steam friend.
Would make things easier for many users.
