When Windows 10 comes out, I will be switching over, most likely asap.
In any way, if I don't like it, do you guys think there will be a way to go back to Windows 7 without having to do much?

You could always dual-boot it, so you can just switch back if you're not impressed.

Nope, you are converting your existing license to a 10 one. You can only revert it back within the first 30 days.

If you're using an OEM version of Windows 7 with a BIOS-embedded SLP key, I don't think it's possible for them to revoke your W7 license (since many, many computers share a common key) unless they overwrite the SLIC table in your BIOS. I don't think they'd do that.

I only said what Microsoft announced a few days ago. And they even said they will show "good will" regarding OEM versions. No idea what they actually mean with that but I guess you can still activate it.

For sure. I was more wondering how they would actually enforce that in that specific situation, not trying to say you're wrong.

Doing a bit of reading, I found a post purporting to be a response from a large OEM saying that after 30 days, reverting is only possible with recovery media. I'm not sure if that applies to OEM machines only (since they can't deactivate OEM SLP licenses).

Where did you read that? The base license stays intact. You can always reinstall the upgraded system. Those 30 days you're talking about are only valid for technical preview's automatic rollback. At least there is no information on how the rollback will work in the actual public release. But I'm 99% sure you will be able to reinstall your previous system, because they do not plan (or never mentioned it) that the initial licences will be canceled. When you will upgrade within 1 year from the Winindows 10 release you will get activation for the new system as an OEM, but your previous OEM/Retail license will stay intact.

PS. OEM systems are getting update too, at least the stand alone OEMs (not preinstalled by the laptop manufacturer etc). Checked by myself. Both types of OSes are getting the WIndows 10 upgrade notification and upgrade is available.

No, you are converting the license. That's how it works.

Read it for yourself, in case you are fluent in German (or just use a translator like the build-in one in Chrome)

I looks like this is a rumor spread only by computerbase.de. There is no official confirmation anywhere. Probably they based it on the technical preview's rollback menu. Also Microsoft's systems always allowed downgrades, so why should it change this time? Anyways, it's still a rumor. Personally I don't believe that it will transfer Windows 7 license to the new OS version and disable the activation for the previos OS. But I guess everything is possible nowdays.

PS. Called Microsoft - they say that they do not expect any key conversion, and the new license should be upgrade OEM. Those 30 days are only for automatic rollback from the menu. After that you will have to manually reinstall the old system, and that's it.

Pretty sure you could clone the disk drive and upgrade to Windows 10 on only one of the drives, while keeping the Win 7 disk in a dual boot environment?

Nope. Look at the second link I posted.
It basically says that "Users of 7 / 8 / 8.1 who upgrade, will renew their existing license and convert it to a 10 one. This license will then only work for 10 but no longer for 7 / 8 / 8.1 . In case you don't like 10 you can revert back to your previous OS within 30 days and you'll get your old license back"

I thought I read, that W10 will be free for everyone. Not just those having a W7/W8 license?!

Comment has been collapsed.

Nope, it will be free only for selected Windows 7/8 licences. For sure those will be reatail and non-preinstalled OEMs. But maybe they will change something in the future. Also it's not true that pirated version will be upgraded to licensed Windows 10 for free. They will update, but will stay non-genuine.

If you buy a new license for windows 10, no problem, they cannot stop you
If you are going with free update, check the EULA and upgrade conditions before upgrading. I wouldn't be surprised if it was one way ticket, MS wants from some time reduce amount of versions in use (ideally for them would be if everyone used the exact same version)

I'm still pretty unsure if I'm going to update or not, my concerns currently are; user interface, drivers, the update it self, file size, ram use, software being compatible, having to re download steam library.
I'd love to play with a vm version to work some things out =D

Unless you erase your steam folder or format, you don't have to redownload :)

I've kept my Steam folder for years. Just launch Steam.exe in the new OS and Steam will detect all your installed games. Just remember to backup your saves that aren't located in the Steam folder (My Documents, AppData, etc.).

Well, they give us something free and everyone says it's suspect. >.< And there are not errors occuring, I installed it for more than 1 week now and it runs perfectly. :) It will not be completly free also, this is kind of closed beta, everyone that asks for one, get an invitation, but when it will be launched it will not be free anymore for those that didn't get a key, also, if u don't activate the key in the closed beta, you won't be able to activate it when it gets launched in the final state. :)

Yes, sorry, that was just my first thought... like: it's free, you test it and after a few months it's not working anymore and you have to buy the key.. lol.
The FAQ says: "It is available for a limited time: you have one year from the time Windows 10 is available to take advantage of this offer." A pretty long time!

AFAIK you can use the insider version (basically the perma-beta version) and keep it for free forever

yea, I figured it out when I've read the FAQ :p
but my very first thought was, that after some time we'd have to buy the license.

Ye, that was my first tought also, but I also tought about not judging that fast and gave it a try, it's really good for now, I hope it won't get bad at a time and pop errors all the time, I would get back to windows 7 gladly. :) You should give it a shot also, you can always revert back.

Find a friend that studies at a computer science university.
For example i'm getting any version of windows for free.. (Vista -> windows 10. ) + windows server edition (2003-> 2008)
The only versions of windows 10 that are currently available are Windows 10 preview and windows 10 insider.

I'm expecting to see windows 10 pro available for download a few days before the official release.

Check if your school/university is.. "green-lighted"

I study computer science myself, and we only get time limited licenses (for as long as we're registered. Also only one per student.

Not abuseable in any way in my country (Germany). Is it that different in the states?

Well, i finished studying a while ago and i still have access. Also there's no time limit here.
And yes, it's only one copy/user but we're allowed to install that copy on multiple pc's.

Now with the free windows thing in the taskbar i'm expecting to get a free Win10 because i had win 8.1 pro already installed, and then i'll be able to get a additional copy on windows 10 from the onthehub thing.

If you choose to upgrade to Windows 10, and decide that you want to go back to the previous Operating system, you will have the option to do so within 30 days after the Windows 10 install.

After 30 days, your only option is to reinstall the previous OS from scratch, as Windows 10 will automatically remove the windows.old file to save space.

Obligatory Linux comment.

In all seriousness, downgrading is always possible so long as you still have the Windows 7 install DVD.
