Although emotionally grey is typically viewed negatively, it's the perfect the neutral color (it's between the absence of color and the presence of all colors). Every color shows up on grey, even most other shades of grey (except of course the ones that are close to the background color). Have you ever tried to read dark shades of red, purple, or blue on a black background? Or how about light shades of yellow, green, or orange on a white background?

The previous color of blue was fine, but think about this: what is the default color of scroll bars, tool bars, and the border for screens? It's blue (at least if you're on Windows...I'm not entirely sure about the other OSs). Blue is already everywhere, so your stand on the site going grey should have also applied to the site being blue in the first place.
