Used to be a part of its community, it's something similar to 9gag in that they claim to be a much better community than places like reddit, even though 95% of their content comes from reddit

Harassment at first- fatpeoplehate got banned for harassing imgur mods- which was more OK to censor, but then striking down every seminally relevant subreddit and shadowbanning tons of people for criticism. For example, she tried to post a link to her inbox, and everyone laughing at her for not knowing how to use her own site in the comments got shadowbanned.

Fatpeoplehate harassed and violated the privacy of many people, not just imgur mods. Redditors are all "oooh gotta have privacy, NSA spying is bad" but then goes and shares their creep-shots just to mock people online. Too much of that subreddit was leaking and many of its members were just flat out harassing people in other parts of reddit including places where people post to show their progress in losing weight. (Damned if you do, damned if you don't?) This is why it was banned. There was no singular incident and it had been going on for months.
When the subreddit was banned for its behaviour against the tos they started flooding the website with pictures of their favourite subject and created some wonderfully named new subreddits. Only four other subreddits where outright banned, not "every seminally relevant" subreddit in existence. There are still many controversial grey-area subreddits up because they keep it contained.
Discussing obesity is one thing but what fatpeoplehate did was blatant bullying and so obsessive they couldn't control it any more. They'll probably say something about about "fee fees" but everyone who cried censorship about those subs being removed are the ones with their "fee fees" hurt once they were told "no" and they responded exactly like a toddler having a tantrum.
Pretty sure Ellen was a scapegoat for this whole thing, sure she did some dumb things but there's no way she was the only one responsible and who hasn't done dumb things in their life. Hateful people always looking for a new person to hate on and there she was. Even now you're bringing up one dumb thing that happened to try and make her out to be less than what she is. Besides, the internet has been around long enough to know you don't mess with mods.
So long as you're using a website with power dynamics there is going to be conflicts. If you don't like it, make your own website, then you can be the one to ban everyone who disagrees with you. Not everyone will be catered for and a website that big is that is also a marketing tool it's the filth that has to go.
If you genuinely have a problem with censorship, you should be angry at /r/technology. They censored some stuff about Tesla about a year back. Can't remember much about the incident but it sure seems more important that this.

I wasn't against the original banning of fatpeoplehate, they did engage in specific instances of harassment and stuff. I was against the whole way the affair was handled. No, I'm not going to go to voat.co because of it, and no, I'm not going to go around photoshopping swaztikas behind Ellen Pao, but I still don't stand by her. I preferred the old Reddit CEO, and I'm not obliged to say I support Ellen or a number of the other admins just because I use the website.

She's starting to turn reddit into a hugbox. It used to be anything goes on reddit as long as it isn't illegal, but now inflammatory subs are being shut down. I can't say I'll miss those subreddits, but I can understand some of the outrage.

I guess trollx and y are pretty close to a hugbox but good luck finding that outside, it's neutral or negative most the time. Though I expect that given the most angry are always the loudest.

Skip the middle man. 9gag just steals all its content from imgur, reddit, 4chan and similar sites, then puts a watermark on it claiming credit.

General rule of thumb is don't click on stuff you don't get from trusted friends.
If you're okay with blatent theft visit 9gag. If you're not, blacklist it.
Reddit, Imgur, Tumblr, Pinterest are all much better than 9gag. You've just got to know how to use them.
Voat is a good alternative to reddit if your knickers are in a twist about freedom of speech. It's quiet though.

I used to use 9gag when I was completely bored (Checked in for 5 mins, looked at some pics/gifs and then left) but after updating my phone to Android M Dev preview, 9gag doesn't work. Then I went to 4chan and read about a guy who f$cked his mother and regrets it. Well, it sometimes has some hidden gems in it.
