I take it that I'm not the only one here who still owns a few physical game copies. This is slightly inspired by the fact that my sister recently really wanted to rub it in my face that she got one of those 3DS XL collectors edition Zelda consoles for less than 1/5 of what they sell for on ebay (and it was new in box), so I feel the need to rub it in someone else's face that I've also been a bit lucky with these things. So here are some of the lucky ones I've been able to pick up: picture

You might go "Baldur's Gate, well that's nothing special". Try to find a complete boxed copy in good condition for less than 4€. Some of the other ones might need a bit of explaining:
Redguard While not a super rare game, it's one that still fetches a decent price due to the series it's linked to. It's an elder scrolls game, released between Daggerfall and Morrowind. Got a new in box one for I think 5€ (was a while ago, so I don't quite remember).
System Shock 1 Again, not super rare. Found a shrink-wrapped copy back in 2003 (I think) in a bargain bin for 2€. Budget edition, so it came in one of those old blue boxes that EA used, but still, not a bad find.
Pink System Shock 2 You'll never be as fabulous as me until you own a pink System Shock 2. It's from a compilation that I bought back when System Shock 2 was hard to find, for next to nothing. SS2 still stands as one of my favourite games of all time, and it was the standout game of that compilation (I bought it from Dungeon Keeper 2, which turned out to only be so-so)
Limbo of the Lost For this one it's more down to the story behind it, which made the game get recalled. Sadly it's the more common European release (being European and all, that's no surprise), but still, it's a game that is quite interesting to own and (try to) play. This wiki details what makes it special. The game is awful though, absolutely awful, it's just the story attached to it that makes it funny.
Ultimate Wizardry Archives Here is a game that actually holds some value. I've seen it go for like 70-80€ on more than a few occasions (and that is without the box). Sadly my copy also lacks the box, but I got it for 1€+shipping, courtesy of the local Ebay counterpart not drawing a huge crowd (Sweden does not have a large enough population, so it's not super uncommon for rare and expensive thins to be overlooked).
Mr. Gimmick It's one of the most expensive NES games in existence. No, it's not as expensive as the tournament cartridges, or the very small handful of rental-only games (actually, it's more expensive than some), but it's still really expensive. I ended up getting it before it became expensive, back when I was just a kid. I traded a copy of Ice Climbers for it. The reason why the game is so expensive is due to the simple fact that it got a very limited release. It was only ever released in Japan and the Scandinavian countries, and right at the end of the NES's lifespan. The game itself is also really good, I would even go so far as to say that it's one of the best NES games ever made, and it also had an outstanding soundtrack. The Japanese version of this game had a special sound chip, which the Scandinavian one lacked (so the Scandinavian release sounds a bit worse than the Japanese one), but what's more special about it is that the game also had a custom graphics chip, which might be why it did not see a wider release, because it was so expensive to produce.

So what are some of your luckiest gaming pickups?

And because I know that you would never be here if there was no chance of a giveaway: here goes, a game about finding hard to find things

I have Bubble Bobble part 2 NES version and snow brothers but turns out latter was just a well made loose copy.

You mean as in reproduction cartridges? Yeah, that can be an issue when you are looking for expensive NES games. I don't collect NES games, so I've not come across any, but I would guess that it's really hard to tell them apart.

Nope they were unlicensed copies, just checked out Mr. Gimmick, pretty damn nice.

I just looked it up myself, and it would seem like the price on that game has gone up since last time I checked. I should probably consider selling it. Sure, it's a darn good game, but is it $500 good? The answer to that is no, no it is not. No NES game is that good (actually, I can't come up with a single game that I would consider to be that good).

  • I saved a physical copy of Killer is Dead: Nightmare Edition from a bargain bin a few weeks ago. 2 euros spent to move a title from my wishlist into my backlog.

  • I also found a complete set of The Sims 1 + all expansions in a fancy metal box for 10 euros once, for someone else. I was trying to track down a copy of the base game for around that price.

  • And I should have a boxed copy of the Ultimate Wizardry Archives I believe. Should see if I can still find that, haven't really seen it after moving house a few years ago.

  • I forgot: I'm also the owner of a copy of the pretty rare Blaze and Blade. But that's more for sentimental value than money worth, as more than a decade later it still doesn't go for more than bargain-bin price.

Found a physical copy of Homefront in a bargain bin for 2 Euro. It's the Steam version, but I didn't even open it yet, too many games on my backlog.

At least it's the best discount for this game so far ... until the next Humble Deep Silver Bundle ... ;)

Awesome! That's a nice one to have.
I've got one of those, too, but it's part of the GTA classics collection. It comes with GTA: London and GTA2.

My biggest treasure has to be the 10th Anniversary Myst Collection that is practically new, only had some damage on the box but otherwise it was still closed. For 1 dollar, it was truly worth it.

BF 1942 Anthology edition. I don't think is that rare, but I've spent much time looking for one. And I'm happy with it.
Another would be Super Meat Boy Ultra Edition. Again not that rare, but I found the manual instructions very funny and entertaining. And I bought cheaper that it ever was on Steam, which is nice.

I still have the very first Prince of Persia on a floppy disk if that counts. Don't remember the price though.

It was the very very first game i asked as a present back in 1992 and it is still playable as back then. The funny/lame part of the story is that at the age of 9 i could beat the game but now i can't :D

Bought Anachronox, Rune and Arx Fatalis still sealed at a pawn shop for about $5 each. Don't know if they qualify as rare. Picked up ESO Imperial Edition(physical edition) for $35 and Heart of the Swarm Collectors for the same price.

I would've stopped by without a giveaway, though. This is an interesting topic!

I got a copy of The Legend of Zelda collector's edition disk, complete with manual and original case, all for ten bucks. That was when GameStop was selling it for around forty bucks. Right now, they only copies I can find are going for around sixty to a hundred+ dollars. I'm incredibly thankful that I got a good deal for the thing. Not for +1 Rare Game E-Peen, but because I really love the whole LoZ series. And this is the easiest way to play all of those games.

I also picked up a couple of PS2s and a shitload of games, all for just twenty five bucks. Though all of the disks are rather scratched. But that's what my Game Dr is for, of course!

And I'm still looking for the Metroid Prime collection. Don't know how well I'll do with that one, but I'm sure I'll get it eventually. Didn't sink all of those stat points in Luck for nothing!

I somehow managed to get my hands on one of the rare copies of Cave Story 3D. I also got an elusive copy of Pokemon Conquest, but that game sucked, so I got rid of it.

The Cave Story 3D with the lenticular cover, I take it? I saw one of those a while back. They look really, really nice.

Nothing of the sort. It was just the game, no game cover. But it was still pretty cool to get one of the rare copies of that game.

Bought this for $7 while working at a used game store. Had no Idea it was worth almost $1000.

Wow, that's quit a find! Was it just the complete game in a test cartridge, used to see if everything worked, or was it a beta?

It's the whole game. It was used at Nintendo repair centers to fix broken systems. When I was working, this guy brought in a box of weird old Nintendo stuff (he had other test carts too). If I'd had any idea that it was all equipment used at a Nintendo repair center I would have bought the whole box of stuff.

You would have loved a store that me and a few friends stumbled upon in Tallinn. They were selling WW2 things (Russian and German mainly) and in the store they had what must have been the worlds smallest SS uniform for ~250-300€, in a very good condition. As everything else in the store seem to have been genuine (one of the people I went there with bought a Russian medic bag for I think 10€ and it was later identified as "most likely a real WW2 one").

And I'm not really a collector either. Out of the games mentioned above, I only knew that Wizardry Archives & Limbo of the Lost held some value when i got them, and I wanted to play both anyway (turned out that I liked neither. Expected that from LotL but not from the Wizardry games).

Got 2 lucky pickups:

  1. At a secondhand shop I picked up these items for the little prize of 20 euros.
2x Jumper pack, 3x Zelda Ocarina of Time, 2x Donkey Kong 64, YoshiStory, Banjo Kazooie, Pokemon Stadium and Super Smash Bros :D
They aren't in the best condition, but are playable and it's really cool to have them in my collection.

  2. Picked up a copy of Half-life in an other second hand for 1 euro, tested it on steam and it turned out that it wasn't activated yet.
So I activated the key and got a premium package or something with all the old valve games in it.
Sooo I got Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Deathmatch Classic, Half-Life: Blue Shift, Half-Life: Opposing Force and Team Fortress Classic.

Not that these are super rare games, but it saved me a lot of money hehe
