Overall positive. the gameplay is great... accesibility? heck no, it took literally more than 10 tries to like the game, seriously i played it several times only to dislike how clunky it felt until one day i started to like it. story its pretty good, it would be great if it was more consistent but hey, its interesting trying to piece it together atleast.
now i have the same problem with clear sky, started it and cant bear to play it, i hope i come to like it someday

I bought this at release on disk, still have the box and disk too. I never finished it though. One of the first patches was incompatible with early saves. I didn't want to start over, so I kept playing the unpatched version until I ran into a game breaking bug. I don't remember now what the bug was, but I remember I made it to that radar station area just before going to Prypyat.
The atmosphere in this game is creepy as hell. My cat made a noise behind me once while playing it and it sounded like one of the creatures and scared the crap out of me. It's definitely best played now with mods that let you sleep. The nights are dark and without decent night vision goggles when you don't get for a while it's hard to see the things out there that want to kill you. I didn't have the luxury of such mods back then, so when I was caught out in the dark I found a safe place and just waited for day to come.
I picked it and the sequels up on Steam, and then was able to use my original CD keys to get them on GOG. I've started it up a few times since then to check out some mods, but I've just never gotten around to playing it seriously and finishing it.

Great setting and atmosphere, solid mix of rpg, open world and shooter elements, the story is alright but nothing special, almost unplayable on release due to game breaking bugs. With patches and mods it turned into a very good game. I played and enjoyed all 3 parts of the series with Call of Pripyat being the best of the series imo. You will also need some time to get into the game as it does not really hold your hand.
Suggestion for next thread: Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

its been ages. i beat all 3 of em. fun fun. multiple endings etc.
BE SURE TO MOD\PATCH YOUR GAME TO LATEST BEFORE TRYING. i never ran into any bugs that i can remember.
unfortunately if you play the 3 games in chronological order. its like Playing
Ok , meh\ok, their best?
2nd game , 1st game, last game
but since you're just asking about the first game, (2nd chronologically)
then it was a nice introduction to the series. definitely play with headphones and mood lighting for night \ dark areas.
I liked #1 for being the first in the series, so it had lots of silliness to it since the other 2 games really harshed it out and made it more serious.
example. in shadow of chernobyl, the artifacts. special stat affecting items you can find throughout the world, are really wild and loose with some stats increase \ decreases. whereas in the other games they really toned them down so much. that and depending on the chronology of the game, some artifacts are removed \ tweaked accordingly :(
With this series of games, hardest difficulty is easy for the most part. just gotta get used to old 80s 90s action games where the enemy would spot you a mile away and shoot right away sometimes.
'gameplay' its a mix of shallow\deep?
shallow being that no matter how many times you kill people, there will be respawning groups that creep back in eventually from the edges of the area. (after some while though so once you've cleared an area it'll stay cleared for... some time?)
Deep in that it has night n day cycles, and monsters\people that move about accordingly to such conditions... usually.
that it has multiple ammunition types and that you hafta manually switch between them (well toggle a key oh whale) unless you shoot out all of your A ammo and then you just automatically start reloading\shooting with B ammo
You gotta eat \ keep stamina up... at least you did in the other games.
Accessibility. Overall easy for the most part, just semi constantly remember to quick save while you're running around. Especially when you're in an anomlyous zone where every single step is one step closer or away from death.
can't be stuck since its a semi linear several interconnected large open areas with decayed buildings kinda game. But man do you do a lotta running.
Story, you're an amnesiac mute. How typical of shooter games.
you pick up the storyline through how much you interact with other npcs. story critical ones usually cannot be killed.
cutscenes really put the atmosphere\mood of the game too. Also depending on how much storyline you want, you hafta explore every damn nook n cranny. which is creepy spooky scary as hell depending where it leads you. but of course curiosity has its own rewards too...
think of it like any other shooting war game, you're dropped in the middle of the action, you hardly know anybody. everybodies out to save their own hides, so you won't get much backstory about anyone much since you're all busy trying not to die from everyone n everything else.
Overall the games were enjoyable.
butt fuck the online multiplayer abortion money grab they made SZONE. such a pity they coulda made an actual nice thing for the series for all to see.

Positive, even with all the bugs and the issues they had with Directx 10 and some graphic cards. Very positive.

Great game, really loved it. The mission in an old laboratory (or whatever that was) still gives me chills. The story was pretty good and interesting, I was looking towards knowing the whole of it. The whole atmosphere of the post-nuclear catastrophe place was really lovely, too.
On the other hand, the game was filled with bugs, which could get pretty annoying, because some would require you to reload a previous save to progress.

I just wanted to say I loved all 3 stalker games. Shadow of Chernobyl being my favorite one. Too bad it didn't have the equipment upgrade system yet.
Edit: I think it was on that one that we were in a corridor when a psy-emission-yoda guy showed up? Scared me sh*tless
Also I'd like to suggest Diablo 1 for debate/discussion. I'm playing it right now.
