"Developer Smallthing Studios and publisher Leonardo Interactive have announced the return of the 1990's point-and-click adventure classic series Simon the Sorcerer in the form of Simon the Sorcerer: Origins, an adventure-game prequel to the 1993 original.

As you can see in the announcement trailer above, Origins styles itself after a '90's Saturday morning cartoon, which both modernizes its look over the MS-DOS originals while also grounding it in a fittingly retro style as well. Origins is set a few weeks before the events of the first game, which saw Simon's dog Chippy accidentally uncover Ye Old Spellbooke in a chest in the loft of his house, which opens a portal once Simon opens the book, enticing Chippy to go through it and Simon to follow.

"It has been a long time wish of ours to revive one of the gaming industry’s best loved and iconic characters," said Leonardo Interactive founder Leonardo Caltagirone. "Our goal will be to create a new world brought to life with beautiful modern visuals and all new gameplay mechanics to tell the untold story of Simon’s origins."

IGN will have more on Simon the Sorcerer: Origins as development progresses. Origins is due out for PC and consoles in early 2023-2024."

[Edit]
The adventure community is buzzing with anticipation as Simon the Sorcerer Origins, the prequel to the iconic 90s point-and-click graphic adventure, has just released its all-new overview trailer. The trailer, which was premiered as part of the Future Games Show Spring Showcase, is teeming with brand new content that promises a nostalgic yet modern gaming experience.

Developed by Smallthing Studios and supported by publisher Leonardo Interactive, Simon the Sorcerer Origins is an all-Italian project that has managed to win over Simon and Mike Woodroffe, the original creators of Simon the Sorcerer. The game features British actor Chris Barrie, the original voice actor of the main character, and music from the soundtrack composed by Mason Fisher.

The game is being meticulously crafted by an 80-strong team of professionals, dedicated to creating a new adventure that is worthy of continuing the Simon the Sorcerer legacy. One of the most exciting aspects of this release is the inclusion of pop legend Rick Astley's hit, "Together Forever," which further amplifies the anticipation surrounding the game.

Simon the Sorcerer Origins is expected to be one of the more anticipated releases of the year and will be available in 2024 on all major console platforms and PC. To add it to your wishlist or to find out more, visit the game on Steam.

Simon the Sorcerer 1 is my all time favorite p+c adventure game, but to be honest I'm very skeptical about this as all Simon games have been a flop since the second game & the last one that was in development called "Simon the Sorcerer: Between Worlds" got cancelled, or dropped, or whatever happened to it.

The third game was awful as publishers wanted it to be in 3D - stupid publishers back in the late 90's pushed 3D so hard, even though it didn't make sense for a lot of game genres, & I personally think it was one of the main reasons that p+c games ended up falling off the map, until they started becoming more popular again after the release of smartphones/tablets.

The 4th & 5th games were made by different developers entirely & while the graphics looked ok, the story writing & voice acting & humor was terrible from what I can remember.

In regards to Chris Barrie, he only voiced the first game. He was supposed to do the voice acting for Simon again the Between Worlds game too, but I don't have a clue why that game fell through as it disappeared into a puff of smoke along with the storybeasts dev team.

Anyway, instead of this game, what I would really love to see is an ACTUAL HD remake of Simon the Sorcerer & not that sorry excuse for HD upscale that MojoSoft did with 2XSAI. That's not an HD remake, that's just being lazy & slapping a filter on it that makes it look inferior to the original low res pixel art graphics. I can apply that filter & upscale myself in dosbox for the same result. :(

Yeah all that news has disappeared like it never existed, so strange, the website, lots of screenshots (like Chris Barrie in the studio).

Absolutely true too about the horrible newer version, i don't know about dosbox but it's just one button with scummvm.

Personally i never disliked 4 and 5, they were okay, and the third? Well it was clunky, same as with monkey island 4, but once you can get passed that (and lots of running around) i still found it enjoyable.

Chriss Barrie will be included in this one.
