Will you subscribe to the Slow Game Club?

View Results
[YES!] I'd love a slow roll-out of curated games, engaging in a community and supporting future developers!
[Yes] I think this is a good deal for well-reviewed indie games
[Maybe] I need to know a bit more about the games and perks before I get this
[No] I hate indie games, game developers and charity!!

whew, seems like a lot, esp. given how many games get deep discounts within 6 months of launch.

I was thinking that too, and not sure if I should put these details up too.

Each one has been bundled once:
Thank Goodness You're Here - Safe In Our World Charity Bundle 2025 - Fanatical
Sorry We're Closed - Build Your Own Supreme Collection Bundle - Fanatical (2/3/5 items for USD$12.50/12/11 each)
Despelote - Stories from Latin America Bundle - Humble Bundle

The publishers are Panic - that don't seem to frequently bundle their games (Arco once, Herdling, Untitled Goose Game, and Firewatch) and Akupara Games - that bundles occasionally but doesn't heavily discount many of their games (Darkside Detective series, Rain World, Behind the Frame, GRIME, Mutazione, and a lot more).

Not to say that a carefully curated set of games doesn't have value - there's too many games coming out to sift thru them all.

But at the risk of just repeating myself, this doesn't even sound like a significant discount over what the first good post-launch sale would be. For being locked in to a year of curation, which undoubtedly will result in some personal misses, that hardly seems like a worthy trade. Rain World was free on amazon way back in the day, heaviest discount there is ;-) Untitled goose game is often 50% off. Etc.

But interesting to post, IMHO, so thanks for doing so!

For discounting, consider the Fanatical Supreme/Platinum BYOBs. Those can be as low as USD$2.86-11, while this is about $4.38 per game. Unbundled, the lowest sale price for these three so far have been $12, 14.36, and 9.75 (of course, potentially being cheaper as they get older).

I still think this fits in as a pretty decent deal if you wanted 12 games. Most of the responses I've seen here is whether gamers want to play a 3-hour game about a kid growing up in 2001 Quito's football hullabaloo where you talk to friends and family while kicking a ball around, or not.

Yea, back when games released complete, relatively bug free, came with booklets, maps, and all sorts of physical goodies besides the game cart itself, and where 1 out of every 10 game would become a classic people talked about for decades to come.

We're living in a very different time.

i mean, its actually not that bad of a discount if you want to get good indies for like $4,80 a month, kinda slow for my liking tho. It would also be good to know if you get the games after their designated month, looking at the other games may change my perspective in favor of the subscription

I really don't get why everyone seems to think subscriptions are attractive to anybody.
You pay in advance for something you may not be interested in at all and it's a recurring disappointment every month?
If I wanted that, I'd pay for Netflix.

I can see why they'd start with Thank Goodness You’re Here, it's a really fun game and is worth its asking retail price.

The other two on display, not so much. They might be great but they might also be indicative of future choice curation quality.

The Indy scene has been incredibly vandalised this past decade or so making Indy harder for developers looking to pull off another Lemmings or Tetris success without running into those there trying to steal the wind from their sails.

No X, but yes to BlueSky over at the parent company Into Games (X icon is still there though!) and so I'm thinking semi-militant sales force with political leanings. Cool for those that are into it, I'm just more of a Crisis comics fan over Oink! person but the tides seem to be favouring this new style and so I'll grow old gracefully and wish them well.

Wouldn't hurt them to have their 'merch' have some presentable images for the extra 26 quid. A canvas tote bag, sticker pack, Field Journal. pen and gift card (All branded) seems a bit steep, but these could all be collectable artefacts worth big bucks in the future.

£108 for the digital only after January 1st 2026 strikes though, so almost 1/3 of that price for those that think they're getting a bargain just now :)

If you are getting someone a gift for Christmas, Thank Goodness You're Here is a superb choice for a gift and their developers, Coal Supper, will no doubt turn heads as they continue to churn out gold with their games. Another Ayrton would give your recipient a bit of mystery and let them explore the Indy scene for themselves, could be an eye-opener for them.

I think people should be political and sharpen their teeth on the rocks of debate, perhaps even change their views through learning, or at least be open to the concept. If that means taking a stance against a company and their services - so be it. Good luck to them!

An organisation open and accessible to all cannot be that though, it has to accept the differences in people and the trials the tribulations undertaken by all. Let each voice, as long as it is within the confines of the law, be allowed to speak and countered in a transparent and safe environment.

When organisations give up one free information feed to people while retaining another - it shows alignment and sadly no political ideal has ever been set which welcomes all and to exclude some is presented in heaps of hubris.

Fine for an artistic subculture, perfect for a group solely dedicated to the plight of certain communities and their principles - not fine for a charity drive of someone else's works which get curated under the eyes and minds of those decided what is right for all whom they deem fit.

Just my tuppence ;)

Actually, I know where you come from in terms of debate and learning online, so for anyone else that isn't easily swayed:

X is a social media site that generates money for the world's richest person by selling ads and users' personal data. It has a lot of advertisements, bots, nazis, AI slop and celebrity influencers. Engagement is very low unless you pay money for engagement. Engagement is typically not moderated, so death-threats, NSFW images or falsified information are all eligible comments in debates. It's features and promoted posts are usually full of fascist rhetoric (for example, Grok/'Mechahitler' and Musk's posts alone). The site frequently breaks with pop-up errors, continuously loads or unloaded content. None of this is new or difficult to figure out.

Any of those are decent reasons to leave the platform and find a better social media site, or meet real people in real life to talk to. Anywhere else someone might actually be able to "sharpen their teeth on the rocks of debate" or learn interesting concepts and novel ideas - the kind that X typically bans or pushes down in the algorithm. Read Kropotkin, Goldman, Graeber, and Bookchin, instead of listening the same boring and try-hard political rants of Peterson, Kirk, Shapiro and Walsh. ;)

Thanks!

That's a lovely round-up of why some people don't use X.

Now if only IntoGames could get their Prismic designer/coder to get rid of their X icon there wouldn't be any reason for this conversation.

It's the having the icon, having had a Twitter account and then deleting their C account but keep the icon which shows that they don't align with that group of people you mention.

I mean there are plenty of other X users who aren't those people, and BlueSky isn't without it own problems with users, but a clear distinction has not been met fully. That lack of integrity in delivery is what puts me off the idea of them being impartial in their service curation.

While I might not participate, I like the idea. For everyone who is curious, the last year's run so far has been on the theme of mystery:

  1. Tails Noir
  2. Genesis Noir
  3. Paradise Killer
  4. Case of the Golden Idol
  5. Dahlia View
  6. Killer Frequency
  7. Bustafellows
  8. Arsene Lupin
  9. The Darkside Detective
  10. Phoenix Springs
  11. Fallen Aces

The 2026 theme is "Indie Hits and Hidden Gems", and they said that they will be be pulling indie games from 2024-2025.

The caption for [No] seems to be too harsh..

Most games are now bundled early (unless they're selling well), so I'm not sure how strong the "2024-2025 gems" theme will be. The starting roster is neither the worst nor the best, and buying annually is a gamble but otherwise not worth it.

I'm really going to seem harsh and unforgiving about this but whatever:

This is a total rip off and waste of money for a start
They call it, "the book club...for games." With the membership, every single month for a year, members get access to the following perks:

A critically acclaimed indie game straight to your inbox
Live Podcasts and subscriber AMAs with the developers of every title
An exclusive Discord community with curated chats and challenges
A monthly email showing how your subscription helps kids make games

If you look at what they promise they promise a great game but from the three mentioned they are choice level of games at a much higher price

For example if you pay 8 a month fro choice you get 5 months for the locked in price of 40 a year with this but here you get 12 games and with 5 months of choices you get 40 games so way more for your money

Live podcasts - well if live means listen as it is being made most people won't even be able to do so with time zone differences and the like and I bet there are many podcasts for free which talk to devs

A Discord is no selling point everything these days has a Discord or Twitter or similar these days

Charity - well helping kids to make games isn't much of a charity but even if it went to a good charity like cancer or the lifeboats nearly every gaming site donates some money to charity even the new ones

Can't say this is very good at all

I was very hesitant about sharing this here, since I don't fully know the culture of SG. Are our backlogs already full from <$10 bundles? Is this a place that respects the racial and gendered diversity of video game designers and curators? Will gamers here enjoy a 13 hour narrative adventure in a post-modernist style on the horrors of the economic system? I'm not entirely sure, but I'm hopeful that maybe 55 (not 136) of yes and maybe voters heard about this here and might enjoy buying or gifting it.

Nothing to be concerned about, it's a deal. Some will be interested, many others won't. But even if some complain that it isn't of interest to them, that doesn't imply that posting it was a bad idea.

Posting was very helpful, and if I didn't have an overwhelming backlog, not enough time for everything, and not enough money for all the things I'd like to spend it on, I would probably go for this. And I know some just like to support an interesting charity or indie developers. (Which I would also do with infinite money. I try where I can.)

Like most kind of large open groups, there's a broad mix of people. I bet a few will hop on it. And I like knowing regardless. (Reading my first post I realize that it might sound like you shouldn't have posted, which I didn't mean. Just that it's larger audience might not be quite laser focused at gamers with enormous libraries.)

Thanks for sharing.!

Yeah, basically another Humble Monthly. Even the Humble "Annual" doesn't lock you into the year's selection, but works on a credit system. Looking at the previous lineup, I personally wouldn't have felt that I got very much value out of it.

Yes, in terms of value, it can't compare to Humble Choice, but you can vote on future games, and some of last year's games are fantastic. And ultimately, there's no point in having 100+ new games if you're not playing them...

Nobody says that you must support an organization just because it is a charity. But it's not up to you to decide what organization is a charity or which one is not. For most people, it's rather easy to understand the difference.

From the FAQ the Slow Game Club website (near the bottom)

What platform can I play the games on?
Slow Game Club is only available for PC gamers and is delivered via Steam keys. Whilst most games are playable on Steam compatible handheld devices such as Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion and similar you may need to adjust settings to get the best from the game. For the best experience, play Slow Game Club games on a PC. The club is not currently available for consoles.
