I occasionally restore a backup, i copy everything from the user folder, 99% it works fine, apart from the few games that saves into the windows registry, then you are screwed.. Is there a list somewhere of what games? Or if not maybe we could make a list together.

It might also be possible depending on the game to change possible resolution settings in their registry.
I can't check each one myself, so if you say something should be in (or out), or maybe it changed, let me know.

Doesn't GameSave Manager take care of this? At least Pony Island is in the supported games list, although Mimpi Dreams isn't. What exactly happens in the latter case if you don't also save the registry? Do your saves then not work at all?

Gamesave manager is so slow on my pc (old pc and alot of games), and just copying the user folder, works 99% of the time. I also don't know what games that program could potentially miss.

The full save information are stored in the windows registry for both games (possibly the other Mimpi game too), there is no other save file in the installation map of the games, so if you didn't save the windows registry, you basically have no savegame anymore which makes you have to restart the game from scratch.

List of supported games for GSM. I rely so much on automatic cloud saving features these days that I don't back up my saves as diligently as I used to (even with GSM), so wasn't really aware of the registry issue.

EDIT: Fixed copy/paste error in url :S

Thanks maybe i will give it another go, but if in the example of Mimpi it skips it then won't be fool proof either, but i think overall not many save to the registry, let alone ones that Gamesave manager would miss too, probably with my luck i picked the only game. :p

I can't remember what exactly but i had some problems with using cloud saves, so why i don't rely on them.

Have you tried the 4.x testing version of GameSaveManager? With it I can scan and backup everything quicker than the 3.x version took to just scan and select stuff.

No, i haven't tried it for a good year i think. I will try it again.

Do you have a link for the 4.x version? I've been using 3.x since forever and it'd be great if it could scan quicker. I tried enabling beta updates in the settings but it still said no new version is available

Huh, I went looking at it seems to have vanished from their site along with stuff like news and others.

Looking into it, seems they suffered an attack couple weeks ago, found a post from the dev saying that things should get restored within couple weeks, so I guess wait and see.

I don't see the point of having a list, why would you ever reference the list. I make backup saves of every game I play and never had a problem. You install the game, start playing, and then find the save and make a backup. What would the purpose of the list be?

The saves are usually in one of the 3 user/appdata folders, the main steam game folder, or in the registry in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software.

If you can't find the save location, pcgamingwiki.com usually has it listed or someone has probably asked in the steam community discussions for the game.

Also, I recently played Construct - Escape The System which saves in the registry.

That is easier if you have like a handful of games installed, not 100/200+ like some do...

If someone said well that and that game saves to a registry too, then it's sharing the information and they could see "oh i am playing pony island, i need to back that up" rather then finding out the hard way, it happened to me twice now with both games mentioned in op, if i could warn someone and prevent it that way, i'd say it's useful.

I don't know how many games it does that way, maybe just a handful.

Do people really install that many games? I have 5 installed. I couldn't imagine playing more than 4 or 5 at any given time. I usually play 1 main story driven game, another that has very little or no story, and then a couple online competitive games. When I beat the story driven game, I uninstall it and start another.

For me it's i get a game or win one, then try it but then something else comes along and you want to try that out, and so on, downside of having so many games and if you keep getting so many (but next year the amount of games i'd get will really slow down, so atleast i get less distracted).

But beside that personally i'd have different moods, in which some genre's would fit better then others depending on how you feel.
If you really think about it more then 100 at one time, does sound insane, but i doubt i'd be the only one. :p

A large portion of the shitty unity asset flips do but I'd guess you aren't all that worried about saving any progress in them.

Personally no, but if one of them would be a game where you could lose several hours, maybe, but usually they are very short games.

Some games that I have backed up from registry:
Akin - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\DahlGames\Akin
Forward to the Sky - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\AnimuGame\ForwardToTheSky
Slash It - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\KupiKey\Slash It
TurboPug DX - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\AppDataLow\Software\SnowFlame\Turbo Pug DX

Can't run Game Save Manager, since I'm on Japanese locale to get some Japanese games to display correctly.

I think Stick It To The Man! have this kind of weird save, because like you I try keep a track of my saves and I never found this one.

Edit: https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Stick_it_to_The_Man!#Game_data
Checked, It's in registry, but I'm not familiar with registry and I don't know which lines from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Zoink Games\Stick It To The Man!\ may contains the save.

It saves installation files to a registry yes, not your savegame information no, there aren't alot of those as most just put them in the installation folder thorugh a savefile.

In some cases you don't want to automatically have your savegames written to steam (like with certain achievements, like no dying), i can't remember the exact reasons but i turned them off more then a year ago because of some issues.
Sometimes savegames also get screwed up and saved to the cloud and you are left with a broken savegame.

As to keep save games, i always just copy my user data folder away each time on a backup and i keep 99% of my savegames too, aside from those that store themselves in the windows register.
