Let me start by saying I haven't owned an Xbox since the original. My brother got a 360 when they launched and I remember playing Gears of War with him and enjoying it. That said, I'd like to play through the series but unfortunately it's not complete with PC releases. I'm a stickler for playing a series in its entirety and am therefore struggling to think about getting into these games. As far as I can tell, only Gears 1, 4 and 5 are available to PC users with 2, 3 and Judgment being Xbox exclusives. So, my question is, is it worth trying to get into this series with such a massive gap in games or should I just mentally write them off as they're only half available?

Worth it with only half the games available?

I played recently through 1st Gears and was well worth it. If you can grab yourself the Game Pass when you have time you can give them a go this way without spending money.

I played 4 having never played a Gears game. They have a good summary of 1-3 and the game is a heck of a lot of fun. I recently got 1 on PC and while I haven’t played it yet, it looks great on my roommates rig. When I bought 4 I got 360 digital copies of 1-3 (maybe judgement too?). I’m not sure if these are still included but picking up a 360 should be super cheap these days if you really want to play them in order. Or they’re part of the backwards compatible list on the One, I believe.

I usually like to play a series in order too, but it was more effort than I was willing to put in to play other titles. Ultimately I don’t think you’ll really miss out not playing every single title in the series. I’m able to follow the overall story and the game itself is enjoyable.

If you enjoy being glued to a chest-high wall and taking pot-shots to evil bug-people (or another kind of bug-people AND robots in the latest one) while marvelling at the pretty skyboxes and the individual texture of every pebble, then yes.
Essentially, if you like modern railroaded shooters that must drop an explosion every 30 seconds because they fear the children playing them will nod off otherwise, then Gears (of and not of War) can be one of the best entertainment you can get as long as you can disregard the comically ridiculous male musculature (seriously, their necks are thicker than their hips). The PC versions are quite solid, considering Microsoft is now trying to treat it as an equal to Xbox. In terms of being able to play it under most circumstances, Gears 5 is one of the most configurable and accessible game on the market as a whole.
