And why that length of time?

How long do you make your GAs when you create one?

I've been making mine last days (just started here a few weeks ago), but I've noticed some GAs popping up with just hours of length.

48 hours. It's a nice balance, as 24h covers every timezone, and twice that covers the off chance a person isn't around for a day. Longer than that is alright too - 3-4 days is nice. Anything over a week starts to be too lengthy to my taste, I like to get it done faster so it isn't just lingering there for me to forget. :P

Edit: I should probably make a note I've only been making giveaways for private groups in recent years, so that certainly has a factor in it, especially considering it's a ratio/activity based group and my giveaways are usually made like, 1-2 days before I become "inactive" hence the urgency to get them done. But even when I made giveaways on the forum here, I usually had them up for less than a week.

3 days, that the normal users can join and not only the very active or autojoiner ones.

1 week, considering everyone's schedule.

I like to balance the chances for people to see and to win, which means not too long and crowded generally, and that depends on how fast people enter. The more selective the giveaway(regional, groups, tests, level), the longer it takes to end. From 8 hours to a week.

Most of my giveaway run for a week. I like to give plenty of time for people to see them and enter, since not everyone checks in on a daily basis. This is especially true for group giveaways.

When I do run shorter GAs, I never go less than 24 hours. With users all over the world, I don't like exclude anyone simply because they are asleep.

Something around 5-7 days. To (hopefully) give everyone who might be interested a chance to see them...

I'm not in a rush. ^_^

At least 24 hours, so every timezone has a chance to enter, often longer.

three days to one week, generally. always end them at 6pm my time because that's when i know i'm inside and at my computer so i can sort through the winners and hit the send button relatively quickly.

How can one avoid autojoin/bot participants? I guess that's where whitelisting comes in. Are there other ways?

I like the idea of a short GA because the few participants would each have a better chance. Those who never saw it before it pops would never know they missed something.

Only way is whitelist, you can also do groups or invite-only but for those you can't 100% be sure either, but I think the most auto joiners are on public.

Shortest is 1 hour, so minute can't be done, but I always do the shortest or if I have to leave soon, I choose the shortest I can do in which I am back again, giveaways give me a lot of stress so the faster it's over the better :3

A day at least, 7 days as max.

Depends on what kind of game it is and for whom. Quality games get more time. Group giveaways usually last about a week, public might just run for a day.

2 days for everyone to have a proper chance to join ; sometimes it's longer, usually ending on Friday (so it's ready for the weekend to be played, if the winner wishes so :3 )

Win Friday, play that weekend? Ha!!

Ubisoft recently did a free weekend for AC: Odyssey, actually free Wed to Mon. Catching wind of it Wed afternoon, it wasn't until Saturday morning that the download was complete, at my 5mb/s download speed (small town).

Usually till the next day, ending set at a time when I'll be available to send out key(s) right away.

I find this to be most practical.

It's pretty random with me but with all the bots/scripters out there I haven't made any quickies for quite some time. So now it would be between days and weeks (latter mostly when I have time/will to make GAs for some kind of events in advance). I chose 'days' answer in the poll though because I feel that up to a week length is well balanced.

Always 24h. The reason is that I don't like having anything "unfinished" that I'll need to attend to for longer than that, but also want to give all time zones a chance to enter.

I always go for hours, rarely for Days (weeks only for community train) in case an asteroid prevents me to send the key at the end...
