In Poland I have also +VAT for every tier. Prices are actually: 11,07$ for first tier, 15,99$ for second, 24,60 for third. It changes A LOT for me. Trading system is cool though, but I think third tier games should give you WAY more than 200 points for each game.

This is strange. Humble never collected VAT this way, and they have the exact same legal duty. Seems like Digiphile is based in California.

I vaguely remember reading something about this in the context of gray market sites. Something about how it's their duty to collect and pay the VAT, and it's questionable whether you'd be on the hook for selecting the wrong country with the "I want to pay less" option. This is some strange and probably untested loophole though, so don't take my word for it. Just throwing it out there in case somebody knows better and can chime in.

They do, though.

Humble doesn't let you select a billing address on a different continent so you can just not pay the VAT. Only grey market sites did that as far as I know. It was widely abused and nobody cared as far as I know.

Now Digiphile is guaranteed to see a suspiciously high number of EU customers vacationing in South America.

Except that doesn't happen. I set my region to US initially then selected where I am (Japan) for my billing (despite it being a UK card) and everything is fine.

Region has nothing to do with billing address. These are two separate things. You can put whatever country in your billing address and you will still get keys for the region you initially set during account creation. Where did you get that nonsense from?

And my billing address didn't even match so they don't check anyway.

Repost of my comment from the other thread:

For me after tax it ends up being whopping 32.84$ CAD for all 7 games. There is a 5$ blood west DLC separate tier which seems a bit excessive too. I guess if you think about it from the perspective of giving money to charity (rather than getting some games for cheap AND supporting charity) than its a good bundle. I am surprised they don't let you adjust donation split. Maybe that's the feedback from publishers they talked about. As for the games line-up - I think it's pretty strong. Almost all of them are on my wishlist. Unrelated, but the website seems a bit "stock/template".

yeah, when i'm paying $20 and only $1 of it goes to charity, that doesn't feel like i'm supporting charity.

i also like the games on this one, so buying for $20 to support a new bundle site i hope i'll like. still waiting for someone to pick up where the old humble indie bundles left off because those got me to try games in genres i normally wouldn't and i actually found some i really enjoyed that way!

I would rather pay $15, and give $20 bucks myself to a registered charity. Then my donation becomes a tax deduction, so I can give even more the next time.

Had some issues linking to my Steam profile at first but then went without issues. Too bad for the ones who have VAT, lucky for me I didn't get that, an average of €3,58 for each of the 5 games I wanted is quite ok for me, and I even got a 6th small game on my wishlist (Genopanic) thanks to that system to convert already owned games in points, but even to reach one in the 300 point range (eyed Backpack Hero and Athenian Rhapsody in there) it will need at least some other bundle with a few games already own.

It's a solid start in my book (of course, I'd have been less generous if the selection of games was less of my taste - System Shock 2 is one of my favourite games ever), to see if it will hold up or fizzle out.

very bad quality of service.
1) no paypal
2) i can not do anything with the game i already own except trade to points or gift to friend
3) exchange for points is not reasonable because it has 3x less rate
4) gift function not works, i asked my friend to register on the site and sent him one game as the gift. He is not able to accept my gift for some reason received error 'Gift not found or already accepted', in the same time i not able to do anything with game for which i already sent gift... tried to resend gift link (only this available for already sent gift) , tried to send mail to support.... silence here

Ah dang, the exchange rate is that bad? Getting 10 credits per $1 of the game's tier doesn't look so bad at first glance at least. I own Shadows of Doubt and System Shock from the $13 USD tier, so that would be 10132 = 260 credits. I want a few games on the Exchanged that range from 300 to 360 credits, so it's not enough, and I don't know if it'll still be on the exchange by the time I have enough credits, though...

A friend sent me one of his keys via a gift email, and it kept giving me 404 errors for a couple of hours. I was finally able to claim it earlier today... but it required me to make an account and link my Steam to it.

It also kept nagging me to let it scan my game list. I refused.

I wonder which ex-employees went there, because they took all the payments problems with them. Why don't they use Paypal, like normal people. And what's with the stupid approach for extra keys, VAT, region-locks and tight expiration dates. Yeah and all those hoops you need to go through during the checkout, just to end up in a payment error. Wonderful start.

Can anyone elaborate on the exchange values for games in the bundle? If I already have some of those games, is it 1:1 value with the games listed in their exchange? Or are purchased bundle items worth less?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's based on tier level. 10 credits per dollar tier. Ex: Blood West is in the $9 tier, so you'd get 90 credits. System Shock in $13 tier gives 130 credits. Their cost in the exchange is 3x the points you'd get from the trade-in.

Got it. Not making a steal this way then. Was somehow hoping to buy tier two, and trade in games to get a tier three game. Not going to work that way though at those values.

Too expensive, two games that were already bundled so they've immediately broken that promise, and no option to change the amount going to charity unless you add more. And 90 day redemption window on top of that. The trade in is a nice idea, but don't think this site will be for me.

I'm unfamiliar with Digiphile and this bundle, what promise was made that was broken by having games that were already bundled? I'm hesitant about the Exchange as well. It's interesting, but I feel it could be more rewarding.

All I know about them is from this previous thread: https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/wW5Vq/

Here's a list of compiled cons so far; will be updated whenever anyone discovers something new.

  • Keys greys out if you own it on Steam, you wont be able to re-trade it, only "gift" and exchange and currently gift seems to be broken
  • Exchange rates are x3 lower, System Shock 2 will give you 200 Credits, System Shock: 130 Credits, etc. ( It's based on tier level. 10 credits per dollar tier. Ex: Blood West is in the $9 tier, so you'd get 90 credits. System Shock in $13 tier gives 130 credits. Their cost in the exchange is 3x the points you'd get from the trade-in. )
  • No PayPal
  • VAT is added to the checkout. (21% for EU so 18 euros would end up as 21.74 euros)
  • All Steam keys have a 90-day redemption window. After that, unredeemed and unrevealed keys will expire and be returned to the developer. You will keep any games redeemed to your Steam account

Comment has been collapsed.

  • first point is easyly avoidable... link an empty steam accoount.
  • second point too avoidable... never exchange there
  • No paypal... i wait this be temporal.
  • VAT... avoidable changing country
  • 90 days redemption... well this is the future of bundles, only fanatical is ouy of this trend

Crappy website. The game selection seems good and somewhat fresh, but the price is too high for me. And given this is their big splash debut, I kind of suspect it's their "loss leader" and the prices will only go up from there. Oh well.

EDIT: annoyed also at the 90 day expiration date, but at least they are up-front about it, unlike humble. +1 for honesty. 90 days is really long enough if you know that's what you are up against.

They have a big stance against the grey market, so it's not surprising at all they have a good amount of safeguards in place.

I honestly can't fault them for that. Ultimately, the grey market is bad for developers and they're trying to be safeguard from it, while also being transparent about that by telling us about the 90-day unredeemed key expiration window.

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm friends with a lot of devs in Indie and AAA studios I've had a lot of conversations with them about things. Some of them won't even put their game in a bundle because they know once they do keys will be all over the grey market and the value of their game goes to shit. With the safeguards in place for Digiphile, they may actually work with some devs and publisher that normally wouldn't put their games in bundles.
