I don't like the GOG client, i want text lists of my games, not having to browse hundreds of boxes to find a game i am looking for, alot of clients do that (Itch.io too) also their whole catalogue by far still not is going to match Steam's either.
Desura was decent for indie games (and they had about 2000 games atleast) until they closed.

The thing is you do not need the client to play the game. Yes they do not have that much titles because they curate their titles and yes not all Devs want their games to be DRM-Free. I would say the reason for not being popular as they could be is that they hasn't tap the bundling market much yet. :)

No you don't need it but if you want to install a bunch of games (like i uhm got 400 installed now on steam) then it becomes a hassle, also i don't need all those seperate desktop icons (it would be too many) in steam i could just click recent or installed and have quick access to my most recent played games, again also harder without a (proper) GOG client.
I am also not really playing alot of games on GOG anymore because eventually i bound to get them on steam, and then you get the achievements and just play it there (or unless you are fine with it play a game twice).
I say the reason for GOG is their limited catalogue, they don't need $1 crap games but there are plenty of $3-5 indie games they wouldn't even think about putting it in their catalogue, since the Good Old Games are running out they have to change something.
Gog had their games in bundles in the past (groupees) and i think humblebundle too maybe.

I'm pretty sure they don't see everyone installing a bunch of games at a go thus they had their client modeled that way. You can download their games directly from the browser so I believe accessibility was their concern to make it easier for gamers to play their games. Steam installs desktop icons for me too but I guess there's an option to opt out. If those are your main concerns for the client then perhaps you may want to raise the issue with them if you are looking forward to play more games on their client. I am sure they will listen. :)
Yes they are changing GOG is not Good Old Games anymore. They are simply called "Gog" rhymes with "Cog". That's the direction they are taking. They have many more modern titles and incorporating titles that are under development/E-A games. The company is still evolving. This yr in their recent sale, they had 3 huge Triple Title Bundles. Those were great games being bundled and the most expensive Bundle was $20 but I believe it contains 3 games released this year. Yes, in a way its still expensive.
However, Slowly but steadily I believe GOG is moving towards a correct and just direction which most of the more mature/older gamers had hoped for including myself. Personally, my concern is them losing money. They are constantly giving out games through GOG/connect and to Streamers' fan base which can be from Witcher 3 game of the year to Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Personally, I've gotten Homeworldยฎ Remastered Collection and Ys SEVEN if I remember correctly from their gifts and of course Shadow Warrior 2 in the recent sale.
I have more hope of GOG being a better Reseller than Valve fixing their curation. Yes indeed, Steam has more exposure at this point. And if GOG starts bundling on GOG, Indiegala, Fanatical, Humble, I'll see myself shifting towards GOG. Even GMG started bundling recently after realizing its a good source of attraction for the buyer base now. For now, I'll not lose hope on GOG. :D
Cheers~

I got to try the client out on closed beta back in April, it was alright. Didn't have the time to check out what changed since then, but if I ever use it I doubt I'd play anything that's already on Steam, I'm not a fan of splitting my games into several libraries.

Definitely real and not that hard as long you don't mind playing some games.

Never heard of it until i saw a giveaway for it on Alienware, they do also seem to sell stuff like Costume Quest, Thimbleweed Park and Inner World.
You can do achievements/tasks on free games (some require Flash), first if you level you get a coupon, much further tokens to trade it for games itself.
If your browser says you already have flash, download the standalone installer with another one, install it, restart your browsers and the client.

[EDIT[ You can filter on free games and some will still show a price but it's pay what you want, you can select 0 and get the game for free.
[EDIT2] Bump, i been doing some games to earn some tokens, almost got 2 and can buy a game like https://store.steampowered.com/app/970140/Reynard/ (no, not steam keys afaik but hey still if you don't care, still a $8 game for free).
Definitely real and not that hard as long you don't mind playing some games.
