Because total value isn't considered cheap enough for it to be considered one...
Unlike the bundle stars 24/48 Games per 1$ the total value of humble monthly doesn't go past 80% ( maybe even lower ) for all games combined.

Does anyone explicitly buy the monthly to farm CV? On average, I usually end up activating half the bundle myself and giving the other half away. But, someone subscribing solely to give the games away? That seems a bit silly.

I actually started buying the monthly to give away since the quality is/was so much higher than anything else and I prefer to put quality before quantity, but in the end activated half of it myself most of the time and now I'm not even sure if I can continue buying it, so plan failed :p

Are you sure it's figured that way, though?
If it were, the higher priced games would end up bundled, and apparently they don't.

Alien Isolation was due a ru-store price bug incident

That's what I figured. It'd be too hard to place individual values (i.e. $2 per game) due to the wildly ranging prices of the games in the bundles.

Perhaps we should lower the threshold for the bundle list. That could address this issue

Or just forget this bundle CV thing and expand the level system so level 10 is at 25k or 50k raw CV or something, with the 5+ copies rule remaining in effect (or dropping their CV to flat 0 after 5 copies).
or drop the entire level thing altogether. ^___^

SGv1 had CV for the most part (CV got implementedlong before me and you joined the site and it was years ago), actually in initial phases of SGv2 beta CV was dropped altogether, simply as the ultimate solution to deal with all forms of CV explotation, replacement of CV with levels happened very late, in final phases of beta, before that SGv2 was supposed to be CV-free and level-free

If you have proof of specific games going below the 95%~ threshold then you can make a ticket for it and I think it will get added to the bundled list. There was another Monthly game that was exploited (Wasteland 2 maybe?) which was bundled. According to what you're saying it's not every monthly game just a few of them, so there's no need for all the games to be bundled? Does explain all those cheap monthly games on strades though πŸ€”

To get to bundle list, price of bundle < 5% of Steam price of all games in bundle.

So, Monthly games would need to have a value of $240.01+ to be bundled.

USD 216, more likely, since we mostly calculate with the lowest value, which is $10.80.

I'm not sure what G2A resellers have to do with steamgifts. Are you saying that guy is abusing the system and giving people free money in order to give those copies here?

Afaik, they said 1. most prices in monthly don't get under 95% discount compared to USA price and 2. you don't know what you'll get upfront for those $12 so it's not like you can plan to give things away and 3. you're limited to what, 1 bundle per person?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Forget G2A, I m talking about steamgifts users! You yourself (any user) can buy it and do what I wrote and get shitload of free cv. And therefor it is abusable; and if its abusable it deserves to be on bundle list. Any individual can farm this way 100+$ cv per month.
You're limited 1 bundle per 1 ccard afaik. How many friends with different ccards you can ask for a favor to do like the guy in screenshot? I can ask at least 10 friends to do the same.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But why would I spend so much money and go through that trouble for CV? I admit I gave some games I was not interested in after activating those I liked... but I don't see the point in subscribing through several accounts just to farm CV. I can understand someone doing all of that to resell and earn paypal wallet or what not... but for cv?

I already said somewhere, once you're above lvl 5-6 and enter some nice and friendly groups, cv becomes meaningless.

Also, I'm pretty sure I was against allowing bundled games on the website at all couple of years ago (not sure if you remember, but they were forbidden and you could get suspended for giving a bundled game before support removed it from the list) but now I realize they made a good call allowing them, because out of 5 games 3 were already bundled somewhere and 1 is on the way to be bundled. It's harder to find a game that was never bundled than to have a threesome with 2 models nowadays.

It is also per credit card example I have 2 accounts
on account 1 I buy and pay via my cc

But buying the bundle and gifting it for CV gets you less CV-per-dollar than buying a game at ~90% off. Anyone who is "farming" it is an idiot.

(Anyone who is farming at all is an idiot - we've done the math before to show that even with the best possible methods, it would take actual years to earn back the value you spent in games won, and they wouldn't even necessarily be the games you want most. There simply aren't that many high-level giveaways. But even if someone is being an idiot and farming for CV, there are many much better ways of doing it than the bundle.)

I mean, a lot of people give away bundle games, but I think that that has more to do with people having leftover copies of keys for games they already own or don't want.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

m3h duno ... on 1 side its a bundle so it technically shouldve been there from the start ...

On the other hand there are many people who would be upset to say the least if that happens retroactively ....

Not to mention some of the bundles did not go past 70-75% off the combined retail price ... which is not really low enough to be considered Bundled by the 90%+ Off rule thingy ...

To be fair i think its fine as it is , Monthlies have some great games in them most of times , and the full cv gain gives initiative for more people to buy it , and therefore more giveaways for the games :)
Its a Win/Win !

Buying the bundle is not free.

Shenanigans involving people overselling their games to gullible buyers and offsetting the cost of the bundle should not be the deciding factors for bundle status. Good on them if they have the time and conning skills to make a profit off their bundle purchase and still have a game left to give away. But this is the exception and not the norm, and we shouldn't punish 100% of the site's users over the possibility that 0.1% of them are getting CV "for free".

+1 if we remove every single game that's ever been given out free then only one person is allowed to gift only 1 copy of a title, then someone in the world effectively got their copy for "free" so it needs to be pulled from the gift-able list.

Comment has been collapsed.

Ofc I am against proposed idea, with similar reasoning, pointed in my comment below, but to play a little of devil's advocate "we shouldn't punish 100% of the site's users over the possibility that 0.1% of them are getting CV "for free" " - we already do it ;p If theres a small obscure sale somewhere, price error that gets fixed within minutes and only a few people used it, we still add the game to bundle list, if theres GA for 1000 keys and keys run out in few seconds, we still remove game from GA list, so yes, we are already punishing 100% of users because small minority could gain something ;) Actual difference is official/unofficial sources. Official sources, like price of item in official store can be verified, grey market trading like it's happening on ST cannot be verified, anyone can create topic with whatever deals, this cannot be base for adding something to bundle list, because I could write I give away whole steam for 1$ and it would then be base to put every steam game to a bundle list - doesn't matter whether I delivered the promised deal or not ;p

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, and sometimes I think games are removed that should have stayed on the list. Or maybe just removed temporarily. I remember buying Divide by Sheep on the first even sale it got on Steam, only to find out it wasn't one the list anymore because there had been a small number of keys given away a few weeks earlier. (That I had obviously missed)

OP's point though is that someone could buy the bundle and re-sell the games with enough profit to cover it's cost back while still having a game left to make a giveaway here, thus getting "free" CV.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I know and I do not agree with OP ;) I simply also did not agree with just one sentence of your reasoning as well, but it doesn't change my view on the topic ;p

Because theorethically it's not just humble bundles, theorethically you could buy any game, any deal or on any sale and trade with it enough to get profit which will make your initial purchase actually free, thus it would mean that everything on Steam must go to bundle list because ytou can do the same with any game on steam ;p It will simply require more time and effort but is possible ;p I remember a topic on SG where guy started of with few cents worth bundle game and was going to trade it over and over until he would get some brand new AAA game and afaik he succeeded ;p

If you feel a game should not be removed or on the bundle list please send in a support ticket. A lot of the time we just remove preemptively because we have no idea how many copies are given.

the problem is, especially with price errors, it's impossible to provide enough data. We can assume, but we have no access to hard data to make our case. GAs usually state "1000 keys for XYZ" (yet not always), but for sales we cannot know if 5 or 500 SG people managed to grab an exploited key. Thus I believe it's good as it is. It is unfair, but it's the best we can do sadly.

All true, but the numerical definition of the word "cheap" doesn't match its semantics. 95% off is not "cheap", it's "dirt cheap, basically free". 75% off is cheap.

Steam account levelling for the sake of levelling is just… dumb. I am high level because I get level 5 badges for games I finished and it happened to give quite some experience points. But I don't want to just spend money on badges for the sake of levelling.

And if you're in a nice group or two or more, you realize most giveaways have no level requirement at all or lvl1 to 4 at most, and are "protected" by group membership status instead. So even lvl 7 or 8 is usually overkill if you don't plan to enter public giveaways or you just like to give games and not care for the cv at all.

Most people that give away monthly are over level 4, so quite far away from "CV exploit" since it takes years even with monthly GAs to go up one level. And I was glad when I saw a lot of avernum 2 GAs, cutting CV from monthly would discourage GAs and probably encourage trading with other monthly buyers or reselling on gray market. I'm fine as it is :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

it was plain CV exploitation. LiS separate episodes got removed from Steam Store, but SteamAPI was reporting their price with price of complete pack (20$). Episodes are DLCs thus cannot be checked for activation in users library. Whether you own only Episode 1, Episode 1,2 and 4 or all Episodes 1-5 it will always show you own whole Life is Strange in your library. Also Episode 1 was (or still is, idk) available for free. Combine these things and you have an exploitation scheme. Create 4 5 copies GAs for each episode, have people who own full game or just episode 1 already enter these GAs and mark them as received, even if you don't deliver. In the end you get 400$ of free CV and there is no proof that you didn't deliver the games, because winners library will only show that they own Life is Strange but will not show which episodes exactly they do own.

SG is and should be concerned only with official sources and prices, not resell, not grey market, because there you cannot even tell if deal is actually real. By your definition - especially second example - if I create SteamTrade topic saying I am selling ROW keys for Witcher 3 for 1$ we should instantly add Witcher 3 to bundle list, right? Or to take exactly from your example - All games from Humble Monthly beside TW: Warhammer should be totally removed from SG - because you could get these keys for free on SteamTrades! See to what levels of craziness it leads? Rules are simple - something below 5% of price in any actual store goes to bundle list and that's it. There is no point in playing any grand schemes, because let's say I buy 10$ game now on Steam, game gets rmoved, I sell it years later for 70$, so I got 60$ free, I can use these 60$ to buy any possible game on Steam, so all games from steam should be bundled or removed from GA list?

Like i said - ST is still grey market and we cannot consider grey market abuse. I can abuse theoretically any game on Steam or item which will get removed to get free steam wallet and buy any game on steam. By your definition all steam games should be bundled because of that. Or like i also mentioned i can create fake ST topic saying i sell any game for 4% of its value, i dont have to deliver, topic is proof enough, right? And again every game hoes to bundle list.

You know who's silly? CV farmers, who spend actual money to gain virtual points in a site level system that will mostly do absolutely nothing for them.

You know who's even sillier? People getting upset that others are spending their money to gain virtual points, where the only side effect is making several lucky winners happy.

If cv doesn't matter, why do you care so much how "easily" people gain it or whether they deserve it or not? I actually get that someone might want to grow their CV, even if it might not be considered an optimal use of money. Sometimes it's fine to pay for cosmetics, or simple satisfaction of seeing your profile number grow. But in what world does it make sense to police how other people enjoy spending their money, if said spending doesn't hurt anyone and actually benefits several?

In other words, how do people gaining CV from monthly games hurt you? And how will putting them on the bundle list improve anyone's life in any way?
