We all remember those third party accessories for our consoles. Sometimes they worked, sometimes they didnt.
Well, looks like Mad Catz has filed for bankruptcy. Now I had no qualms with their gamepads, I did have one of their memory cards for my old PS1 that wiped itself after 3 days.

Still, it's never good to see someone close like that. Means more people out of work.

I feel vindicated for my MMO7 mouse now.

Don't ship products with known flaws - that's what cost you your jobs guys.

Their product design was not for everyone. Never had any high hopes for the company, but certainly didn't expect them to go bankrupt.

I think the quality and complexity of first-party console controllers are so high that there's probably not a lot of room or demand for third-party controllers anymore. Mobile phone controllers are a gimmick and it looks like they were trying to get into the PC gaming accessories arena but there's a ton of competition there as well.

I got some no-name Dualshock 3 controllers from China for about $4 each, including shipping. And they work great. I suppose it's hard to compete in that kind of market.

Nice. So long as they work at all to start with, $4 is a fabulous price to gamble against longevity with- only about 2 months in, and you've already broken even.

I still have one Mad Catz Memory Card (PS2) and Scart Selector. Both have worked up to the present day.

I have a Mad Catz USB joypad that has been working fine for over a decade and appears to be indestructible. The only slight flaw is that its piss poor ergonomics cause crippling wrist pains in any humanoid creature that tries to use it for more than 10 minutes or so...

That might contribute to its longevity... :P

It's actually been used for knocking in tent pegs more than as a game controller. It's got really chunky rubberised grips for when you can't find a proper rubber mallet.

Troubled hardware maker used up its ninth life

Brutal.

Is it too late for an 11th hour deus ex machina to swoop in and save the day à la Logitech scooping up Saitek?

Logitech scooping up Saitek was horrible.
I still have a Saitek Eclipse & an Eclipse II that Logitech simply can't compete with.
And don't even get me started on Saitek's Flight Controller products.

The flight sticks were probably the reason they bought Saitek in the first place. If they're smart, Logitech will integrate those into their product portfolio, not kill them off. That article also reminded me that it was ironically Logitech that bought them off Mad Catz last year. Huh.

And Mad Catz bought Saitek for $30M and sold it to Logitech for $13M. Ouch.

If a product is called Mad Catz, Razer, Roccat i'd rather go with Logitech ... shitty name for brand in my op.

I think Sony and MS started requiring 3rd party controller manufacturers to buy licenses or special chips from them back around the PS3 / 360 era, making 3rd party accessories a lot less profitable. They never could compete on quality, but after that they couldn't really compete on price either (at least not enough to offset the quality differences in consumers eyes).

Oh man, I remember back in the day, like literally 10 years ago I had their R.A.T. 9 mouse. It was my favourite mouse ever just because of how beastly it looked, but holy shit was it terrible in performance. The laser was just absolutely awful at picking up 90% of surfaces and it had mindblowingly bad pixelskipping at times. Probably one of the reasons they're going bankrupt.

Their street fighter IV fight pads were really surprisingly good - I use one for most retro gaming and fighting games in favor of my Xbox 360 controller, and years later it still shows no real signs of wear. Never got my hands on one of their fight sticks though, but those are supposed to be good too.

Whenever I think of MadCatz I always think of their Dreamcast controller. That thing was terrible (I actually really liked the regular Dreamcast controllers, just wish they had had a second analog stick).
