It's in beta; don't expect so much.

Why would you want to dual boot a beta OS? You like screwing up your main PC?

Often do this. I regularly install an OS I want to try out on a completely seperate HDD, and multi-boot.

If you do it properly there's practically no chance of buggering up your main PC (I'm paranoid, and physically unplug all the disks other than the one I'm installing the new OS on during installation).

I think my new 2005 store-bought laptop was 500gb.

Not that I don't agree with you, but if you want to set up a SteamOS box just to stream games from your main PC, wouldn't it make more sense to just use a small SSD?

Why do you need a 500gb hard drive? I need a lot more than that... maybe 5 or 10 Terabytes.

My biggest question.. why does the minimum specs say a 500GB Harddrive and the recommended says 1 Terabyte..Erm.. I have neither.

In no way in hell a Debian-based linux distribution with a 2.4GB full image could require either 500GB free on your HDD or an Nvidia card specifically (this in particular probably just means there are no prepackaged ATI drivers or something). Those are probably foolproof suggestions rather that actual requirements. Just look at the damn FAQ and not some stupid news articles.

Actually, trying it right now. It's your basic Debian with your basic Steam client on top people, what the hell?

Update: for now the most problematic thing about it all is that the bootable flash requires EFI and I have old-fashinoned BIOS pretty much everywhere, eh. Otherwise, this one looks just like Debian, but the sysrestore image actually requires a big blank HDD to make four partitions of fixed size on it and simply clone the system there.

Steam themselves had asked people not to bother with the OS, unless you're a hacker!

Since it's just Debian based...

Why does anyone need SteamOS at all? (other than it's pre-load on Steam Machines)

Just use your favorite Debian-based OS (or even other Linux) and install Steam Client. Same thing, no?

What the fuck is this shit? I only just found out about it now. Wow. Guess not a single thing Steam released this year (aside from reviews) has any of my interest.

So, guys, for now I sort of succeeded in installing this on your basic non-EFI (good old BIOS) system and man do I have a huge WARNING for those you who in fact want to try it now.

Like I say in the article I'll tell you the actual details of the procedure of turning Valve's zip into a BIOS-bootable DVD image slightly later. Now I'll go and recuperate somewhat if you'll excuse me.
