So after rediscovering some of my old favorite songs on youtube today, I got to wondering, as usual, what SG users think had the best decade of music.
I started with the 1960's as many of us might not like or have heard of any before outside of Fallout games. But you can list an earlier one if you want.

Personally, I loved the 1980's. I feel it was more about the music then. The bands had more originality and heart. Very rarely did you hear a cover song back then.

So, lets hear yours and any opinions on them.

And maybe even share a few of your favorites from that decade.

And you can NOT have an '80s list without this iconic song.

If I would post all my 80's favorites then people would accuse me of spam. ;-)

That song has a '90s connection, though.

90's for the number of good bands and rock-related subgenres yet available and developed. But I have to say that Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix were WAY ahead of their time, so... Aaaaah so hard

With the recent return of 80s synth-based music through synthwave, it's the cool genre to listen to at the moment. But if you were around in the 80s, there was a lot of crap released that nobody remembers.
It's hard to pick a period but most if my favourite albums were released in the 90s so I'll go for that.

Every decade has a lot of crap that nobody remembers. 70's had the disco overdose, 80's had too many power ballads, 90's had all the same-sounding eurodance trash, 00's was full of britpop copycats, 10's is infested with one-day-fly singer-songwriters...
That said, 90's and 00's are my favorite eras so far.

When I say synthwave, I mean artists from the last 10 years like Mitch Murder, Com Truise, Timecop1983 and others who use specific features of 80s music like detuned synths and gated drums, but with a modern production touch.

The 90's. Anything by Tool, Primus, or The Melvins. It was also the age of Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and Nirvana. It was a musical Renaissance compared to the 80's.

The 60's would be a close 2nd, though - Hendrix, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, etc. Another age of drastic shifts in music.

I feel like I should say the 60's, probably most influental, but I'm gonna go with the 90's, much closer to my growing up and hence I have a stronger emotional bond to it.

I do agree on the 60's being influential, but I was an 80's kid and I admit it.

Of course, it depends on genre
My favorite directions did not develop until the 90s, so I should say 90s
...but by and large, I prefer the 80s vibes
Unfortunately, the 80s were not as versatile as we always think
There was already enough crap so that you hear your own favorites over and over again
hard to find something fresh from the decade
luckily i discovered City Pop a while ago (the japanese variant of the 80s)

70's is by far the best decade. Some bands and singers started in the 60's and some did their fame in the 80's, some are even active today, but most became legends in the 70's. Queen, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Elton John, David Bowie, Sex Pistols, The Eagles, John Lennon, KISS, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty... And a long etc.

You got a point there, I just checked my playlist and I have just as many from the 70's as the 60's. Most of the bands had their real breakthrough in the late 60's - early 70's. Was a golden period for music (and much else)

Yep. I went 70s, then 90s, then 60s, then 80s...but there are good things to say about all of those decades.

I don't feel that we've had a major musical movement since the 90s. I mean, what...dubstep? Gah.

I still buy a ton of new music, but most of it's kind of obscure. Almost everything on the radio today is shite, because it's just some garbage produced by Clear Channel hacks who create it according to formulas of what sells, or some DJ who slaps drops and distortion over someone else's music and pretends that turning a few knobs live is somehow difficult and makes them a musician. 🤣😎

Definitely not the 2010's, but every named decade before that had a bunch of awesome musicians. Historically the 60's are obviously the most important, but the 90's are still my favourite (Pulp, Blur, Suede, Garbage, Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Depeche Mode).

Hard to say!
I've always been a fan of very different genres of music.. I just never managed to like '80s music for what we intend it of course, I mean, mainstream '80s xD
Overall, I think that the '60 have been the most important decade, followed by the latest years.. after the '90s we had a huge improvement in technology and access to music, everyone can show his/her talent, and I found out tons of singers and musicians from all over the world.. I love the classic '70s rock too and I've always loved metal as my favourite music genre along with female pop music, but I think that after the '60s (which basically introduced everything that will flourish after years and decades) only in the '00s and on we had another huge musical impact thanks also to technology and such, so that we're not limited anymore to some genres..
Though it's hard, '70s has had so many awesome acts, but if I'd have to say I'd go for the quantity of the last 15-20 years and the enormous array of genres from all over the world :')
My vote still goes to the '60s for having been in most aspects the opening key that made possible the explosion of all we have :)

I love a lot of Classic Rock, so probably 1970s-80s - but I'm not picky, music from pretty much every time as some great stuff.
Queen is #1, Wham!, a-ha, Bon Jovi, Journey, etc. there's way too many to write. My go-to pick-me-up song.

Also during the jazz age, would be incredible the bee's knees to hear live.

80s and 2000s are both great decades regarding releases of my favourite groups, 90s and 2010s somewhat less, but still important. Most music from the 70s or earlier horrifies or bores me.
I'm a bit tired of those nostalgic claims that music was better in the past. There has always been a lot of shit and there has always been fantastic stuff by passionate artists. You just need to find it, which is easier today than ever before.
