Hello I am upgrading my PC from Windows 7 to Windows 8. My resolution is 1280 x 1080. I know you gotta have 1080 x 768; to run apps. I can't make my res any higher and I can't afford a new monitor. To use all feastures I gotta have 1380. Which features will I be missing out on?

Edit: I just did it...... and it fucking sucks fffufuuuck

Apps are totally useless IMO. Go for windows 8.1 if you can, it has a visual upgrade in the metro menu.

Downgrade the crappy Windows 8 to Windows 7. Seriously.

  1. Windows 8 has an useless integration with Skype
  2. Windows 8 has a strange and unconfortable graphic
  3. You can't run a lot of games on Windows 8
  4. The system.cfg and the other nerdy things aren't much different and they didn't solved the problems of Windows 7.

Sorry for bad english and for not answer the question.

Examples please? As far as I know, pretty much everything that works on 7 works on 8.

As I said, I couldn't remember for sure whether SR was just messed up on my computer or Windows 8, so thanks for informing. However, I do remember for certain that the Robin Hood thing is definitely a Windows 8 issue.

Fallout 3 won't run on mine, but I don't think that works well on 7 either. I also can't run Cities XL Platinum, Metro 2033, and a few others that I can't remember right now.

There's a simple configuration tweak for FO3 for both Win 7 and 8. I ran FO3 on Win 8 with no problem.

I don't have neither fallout 3 or Cities so I don't know

I don't get it, does it require 1080 or 1380? From what you said, your resolution is higher than what is required so why would you want to raise it more?

Features you'll miss out on: Windows 7. While I haven't used W8, it looks like crap so I'll be holding onto W7 for as long as I can until Microsoft pulls themselves together and puts out a quality product.

How can you judge something you haven't even TRIED to use? Windows 8 is the same/better than Windows 7 in almost every aspect, the only difference is start menu, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just different.

I did try the RC and couldn't stand it, although I didn't use it in much depth. Removing the start button, a fundamental part of the operating system, in favor of a start screen with mobile UI elements was a bad decision. Mobile and desktop operating systems should not be combined. To be honest, the lack of start menu and the new start screen are my biggest gripes. I understand you don't have to use Metro and you can get the start menu back via third party addons, but it's the decision Mircosoft made and the direction they seem to be headed that irritate me. Beyond the UI element, I've mainly heard complaints from W8 users. I understand that there are some nice new features like streamlined logical volumes over multiple physical HDDs. I'm generally starting to dislike the way software is heading nowadays.

I understand not liking the "modern start screen", but if you gave it a chance, you'd realize it's not that much worse or even different than the start menu you're used to. It's the same thing, perhaps slightly better even, in a different package.
Most of the complaints you hear from so-called W8 users are made by people who either
a) have never used W8 and only repeat what rumours they have heard and/or
b) people who installed W8, saw modern start menu, realized it was something "different" and decided the whole OS is crap, because they hate everything different and want things to remain the same until they're old and cranky.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think that's one thing about the OS that I can confidently say I won't like even if I give it a chance. I have no use for the app features of the items on the start screen and having to scroll through pages of larger-than-necessary icons/tiles would be annoying. Oh, and I'm not one to utilize the search function to find my programs. I prefer having a concise list from which I can launch everything I need. And to be completely honest, I'm probably a little bit of item "a" but I realize W8 has introduced some convenient new features. I just don't need them enough to put up with the UI changes.

I can respect that :) I personally never used start menu much, so the switch to start screen didn't make a difference to me. I still use Windows 8 like I used Windows 7, but I can see someone who uses Start menu a lot would have harder time switching over.
If you do get past disliking the modern start screen, W8 is better than W7 in practically every way though.

The only problems are:

The apps
The snap feature for apps which you cant even use

When we wouldnt have the mighty internetz you wouldnt get this link from me which explains how to make that apps are usable with a lower resolution as needed...

So...only feature you will miss is how the app snap works...you can maybe just get 2 apps on the screen, instead of 3 or so...

And dont hear for the bullshit of that win8 haters, im pretty sure im experienced and i can say you...win8(.1) is great and most of the things you hear is...bullshit :D...

As far as I know you'll miss the apps only. There are only few good apps at the moment, don't worry, you won't miss anything special. And btw. don't listen peapole talking it's crap. A lot of them haven't even tried W8. All these stuff like "A lot of game doesn't work, Metro is useless, it's working slow, blah, blah." is completely nonsense. Only game that wasn't working for me was Fifa 13, but I found a simple solution. Maybe you won't get any revloution, but you'll get faster OS, intuitive access to main functions - like very fast searching, new design and more.

Both Robin Hood: Legend of Sherwood and Saint's Row II didn't work for me because of W8. Haven't tried 8.1 though. I know for sure that Robin Hood was a Windows 8 thing and I can't quite remember for certain but I'm pretty sure Saint's Row was too. I have some other games that I haven't looked up so I'm not sure if they don't work because of Windows 8 or just if I have bad computer.

Saints Row 2 and Saints Row The Third both work fine on Windows 8.
The only game that doesn't work for me is Serious Sam: The Random Encounter, but that's because the developer has abandoned it and won't update it with the newer version of game maker...

What doesnt work with that game? Just Downloaded trough steam and tested, finished a random encounter on my old save. Works without a flaw, no lag or crash, sound is normal...

I haven't tried it for few weeks, but it was always crashing when multiple of the same sound was played. Try starting a new game, if you can get past the 1st map that has enemies then maybe they may have updated it, I'll have to try again later.
Edit: Just downloaded and played. For the first time ever, I got to the first boss, but crashed in the middle of it. It's a common issue with all Game Maker games that were made with the slightly older version that didn't support W8. Devs that care, updated their games, Serious Sam: The Random Encounter hasn't been updated and crashes on majority, if not all W8 computers.

I'm using 1280 x 1024 on an old crappy CRT monitor, and with 8.1 I'm able to use apps just fine and can even snap two things together on the screen at a time. So, I can do something like use my desktop, or even play a game and then have the Netflix app right along side it. I can't snap more than two things, though.

I can't think of any other limitations.

Would you explain?

I would: It's designed terribly for a mouse. Great for a tablet, after all, that's what it was designed for, tablets, not touchscreen as much, but still that too.

Comment has been collapsed.

Not really true...when you would write "terrible designed for a touchpad"...yes...then i would partly say that it is true what you said :P but for a mouse...no, not really...you just need to get used to that and appreciate what it offers...and with "it" i mean the "ModernUI"(Metro)...which is just the start menu(and some options in charm bar)...

Use the new Start Menu as an alternative desktop...just place the stuff there and you dont need to go to the desktop(or open the desktop folder like me) to start several programs...and when you use the search function in win7...use it in win8 too, works the same...

I have W8 since a quite long time and if you'll get used to these "tablet functions" then they will become really mouse-friendly and intuitive. Like searching. Dragging cursor to the top/bottom-right corner and then dragging it a bit away to activate menu bar with searching and then clicking "Search" button seems complicated and stupid. It's not. It's actually really FAST and intuitive. You only have to get used.

Apps are shit, you didn't use them in Windows 7, why would you use them in Windows 8? I remove all apps (that can be removed) as soon as I install windows on my system, there is nothing in apps that regular programs can't do better.
You won't be missing out on any features whatsoever, apps is a gimmick that is completely optional and silly on a desktop.

First Unit Converter I found on google, seems decent enough, probably better than whatever silly app microsoft has made and for music there are plenty of better options that don't restrict you to having to use metro.
Of course if you use the apps because you prefer to use them, that's a different story... :P

Same. I'm pretty sure it's because people just don't know how to launch software efficiently with Windows 8. I'd say you should next to never use mouse to find an application to launch, you use the keyboard. Saves you tons of time and once you learn it you wont use mouse to browse start menu in Windows 7 either and Windows XP is just pain to use.

Those numbers seem really odd to me. Never heard of these resolutions.
As for what you are missing out on: Apps. Some are good, some are awesome, some are meh. The 3rd party apps are getting more and more. And personally I feel like the apps only really make sense if you a) got a tablet or b) a huge screen. For me it's the latter. It's awesome to use full 1440p for some stuff and get like a magazine type of feel when reading stuff. It beats reading normal websites in my opinion. Especially because most websites are optimized for smaller resolutions.

By the way: Upgrading is not a good idea as there seems to be a high chance of errors occuring in the process leaving you with a faulty installation. Experienced it myself. Always do a clean install, no upgrade.

Edit: Here is a nice example for a great 3rd party app that gives a great experience. It's from a German sports magazine / website. Beats their website by far and is a pleasure to use. I wouldn't want to miss that app. Clicky

I think you miss understood a bit. You need 1024x768 to run app (I have a virtual machine runnig at 1024x768) but to use snap mode, I think you'll need around 1280x800 or 1366x768 (that VM can't snap but my 1366x768 laptop can)
