I don't like Epic and not its freebies either particularly much, but i wouldn't say no to free games.

I didnt like them at release, grabbing up companies for exclusives, and limiting my choices.
But a year or so later I started to see how they were offering good competition to steam, and requiring a smaller cut from indie dev's.
Plus FREE GAMES!!! What's there left to hate?

half-half for me
plus - they give some great games for free and their launcher is only needed to download the games
minus - everything else

From what I've seen, most people say they hate/dislike Epic due to the (timed) exclusives, but they're generally lying to themselves, and everyone else. Most really don't care about exclusivity. If the games were exclusive to Steam, most of the complainers wouldn't bat an eyelid. It's more likely that they don't like the inconvenience of either having to wait for the game to release on Steam, or using another platform. Of course, some people have more reasonable issues with trust or security, and the lacking features, but it's a new platform and it'll improve in time, just like Steam did.

I'm no fan of Epic, and I think the only game I've played on their platform so far is The Outer Worlds, but I appreciate what they're doing. They're giving better deals to developers, allowing them to improve their games or work on new developments, all of which benefits the consumer. Valve/Steam had become way too comfortable sitting at the top of the food chain, and this extra competition from Epic is/will be a great thing for developers and consumers on both platforms.

The thing that's makes me laugh the most about all of this are the people who believe they'll never pay a penny to Epic, when they most likely already have, and will do again. Unreal Engine is used by a whole load of massive and successful games, all of which will be making Epic some more money, no matter what platform they're played on :)

it goes without saying that, yes, the problem with timed exclusives is the inconvenience of having to wait for it to release on your service of choice.
Is that not the point of timed exclusiveness?

I don't care much for EGS either way but still created my account last night for the free Remnant: From the Ashes. (I already had most other past freebies)
However, I have no intention of ever giving them money.
I'm not sure what will happen when the Fortnite cash runs out though.

Even if EGS doesn't attract Steam users, the kids who play Fortnite will be the people that will keep the store alive. In a way Fortnite is the onboarding for the Epic Store.

Fortnite is already 3 years old and player numbers don't seem to drop, rather the opposite. The game supposedly has 350 million players, some of those will definitely translate to EGS users. In June the active EGS users were apparently higher than Steam's, likely because of freebies.

Steam only blow up after 2010.

HL2 was not what made Steam what it is but the fact that it was the first and best store and they added features that no other stores had.

EPIC is not first and far from the best.

EPIC's customers are kids that play free to play.

With your logic the Google store users buy more premium games than Steam ... no they buy cosmetics for free to play games.

Origin removed all their AAA games and added 3rd party games, now is back on steam.

GOG has a feature that Steam does not have but they were not the first and that unique feature is what scares AAA publishers.

All of the storefronts combined do not have 10% of Steam's features: they integrated Geforce Now into their service just a note of what they did this year alone as a major upgrade while EPIC is still struggling with a cart.

I didn't say HL2 was the reason Steam became big.
I didn't say Epic is the first or the best.
Didn't say anything about Epic's demographics really.
No idea what you are trying to say with Google store. Why would they buy more premium stuff? Care to elaborate?
Didn't talk about Origin or GOG or the Epic store features.

I suggest reading what my points were and not coming up with generic new ones if you are looking for a discussion.

Categorizing people between groups of fanboys and haters is never a good representation of the pc gamer base.
There are multiple services, we the vast majority simply choose the one that offers the better service for us, the consumers.
commenting on EGS issues, or their unprofessional twitter usage does not label us as haters.

There are not evil, they met an unexpected success with Fortnite and they try to capitalize on that because they know Fortnite won't last forever.

Sure that's a little dirty but competition is good plus paying 30% to sell your game is just too much.

I don't like them because it is a super rich corporation that likes to lie and paint themselves as a hero of the industry while buying out games as exclusives so other people can't buy them without their platform and that makes their rich corporation even more rich.

Why should I hate it? For giving me free wishlisted games? You can't beat free.
Sure Epic is not Steam but we should compare Epic with how was Steam back in its start. Give Epic 10 -15 years and then we can compare them. Don't get me wrong, I really like Steam, my library can prove it, but I think Epic or any other can only help the gaming market spread the power and avoid monopoly.
It's like most don't like Micrososft (I hate the word "hate") but you got to love XBOX Game Pass. With almost 10€ I played games well over 200€ and I don't care not owning those games because I know I won't touch them again.

Quick question since I never understood those two parts

1- Isn't waiting for EGS a 10 -15 years to become Steam now then compare them would still make EGS 10 - 15 years late to what would Steam be in those same 10 - 15 years then? Making us recycle the same "wait another X amount of years" excuse?
We should compare EGS to Steam now because EGS has the money, manpower, technology of today while Steam back then didn't have money nor manpower and had to invent that technology!

2- Me hating something doesn't mean I can't love the other
I can hate my company being scummy but still love my co-workers or other departments
I can hate Ubisoft greed but still love the amount of passion there devs put in their games
I can hate Epic monopoly practices but still love the technology their devs put in their engine
When people say I hate mega corp X it's simply because they hate the higherups, but to blindly hate the whole company and it's honest workers/devs because their CEO is stupid is 100% wrong

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

2.I totally agree but if I dislike CEO or Epic and stop using and buying from that company won't this affect the employees resulting losing their jobs?

1.Not exactly because the margin for Steam to get better is much smaller than Epic's. They change or add something very rarely compared to Epic store.
Let me give you another example. When Japan started making motorcycles back in 1950 English companies were laughing when they saw Japan's first products. 15 years later English motocycle industry was fighting to survive because Japan industry surpassed them.
Of course I can't be sure this will repeat but if Steam underestimate Epic I am sure this will have a negtive impact on their sales. This is my opinion and I can't prove it but I believe if Epic didn't exist EA wouldn't come to Steam. 30% profit is too much to lose for AAA devs and "give away" to Steam and since all are companies and all want maximum profit EA would never agree with 30%. Since Epic dropped that % I strongly believe, with no way to prove it as I said before, that Steam lowered that % for big devs and now it's a matter of negotiation. Maybe this doesn't affect me like a customer because game prices didn't drop but still I like to have more options. Even if my theory is totally wrong I still believe that the birth of Epic store will have a long-lasting positive impact on the gaming industry.

On a side note, I see many people complaining that Epic doesn't have a cart, but you know what? Most of them never bought a single game so what's the point? They just repeat each other...

1a- 2019/2020 steam added 5 new features (Remote Play, Steam Labs, Remote Play Together, Steam Cloud Play, Steam Points) and a lot of quality of life addons (Profile redesign, Library redesign, Review limiting, Steam Music redesign, etc...)
1b- 2019/2020 added some quality of life addons (Bundles, Coupons, Wishlists, Offline mode, Store Search, Cloud Saves)
1c- In 2 years, Epic added "features" are so insignificant and so standard that they're not even mentioned in steam features timeline when they came, and all of those are "features" steam already had them 10 or 11 years ago. With how much Epic spending on exclusivity more than innovating their store, it's safe to say that improving their store is their least thing they interested in.

1d- I don't really think EGS is any threat to steam at all despite what the media is really trying to tell you.
EGS most aggressive year (2019) revenue is $30.1M (their 12% revenue cut out of $251M total earning) not counting
_The $23M they refunded to devs on coupons
_The 100+ exclusivity deals (Control alone was $10.5M)
_The 70+ free games they give in 2019
While on the other hand, steam revenue in 2017 was $4.3 Billion (not including in-games sales or DLC), and in 2019 steam reported that this was the best year yet. So saying Epic is a serious competitor to steam while it failing to make 1% of what steam did in 2017 is really an overstatement
1f- Giving special treatment to a company will put steam in a really bad spot with everyone that I don't think they can handle at all, especially now. I personally see it as extra revenue and clout,
Wolfenstein: Youngblood sold 1M copies on steam despite it being discounted on release on Bethesda launcher
Gears 5 sold 1M despite being on Game Pass
Microsoft Flight Simulator is top seller on steam for over a week despite being on Game Pass
Titanfall 2 sold 2M despite being already sold on Origin on 2016
So Microsoft, Bethesda, EA coming back on steam simply because 70~80% of something is better than 100% of nothing

2- I'm not totally not buying from all of Epic, I'm simply not buying from the department that I have a problem with their practices which In that case is EGS, that's because reasoning and mature discussion with their CEO (Tim) that what his doing with that department is wong is met with childish respond, mocking and eventually a block, I'm only left with voting with my wallet.

3- The shopping cart is simply a mocking of EGS launcher because listing all the missing features will be too long.

You seem to know a lot more than me, I would never waste time searching what each company earned each year.
Unfortunately we live in times that the platform is more important than the game itself, since I have seen many guys buying games that were or are free on Epic. Well, they have every right to do so but I would never do this and according to you, why make the rich richer?

A quick Google search showd both earning in one article, as for buying I'm one of those people that didn't claim a single free game on Epic and actually buy on steam because of its features, one platform for all games, steam community, etc... It's just happened that being pro consumer = makes you a lot of money

I'm not at all a fan of their launcher or storefront, or the lack of useful features on both.

Honestly, outside of the free games, their deals aren't any better than I've been able to get elsewhere. I purchased World War Z and John Wick Hex, but haven't been even slightly tempted to purchase much else (and being forced to buy one game at a time during a sale is just outright annoying!).

People will say he's just a Tencent puppet and maybe they're right. Buehole/PUBG sued EGS, now EGS sue big dogs. It's just a matter of money like Jim Sterling said, but maybe, just maybe he can lower the cuts for everybody. I highly doubt It, those 2 will not bow to anyone.

i also think loving or hating a company is silly in itself.
in general epic starts to be a big player as well, so it's indeed fake to think that the small one tries to attack the big one, it's more like the big one attacks the huge ones. but many equalish players are still better than one big player and i also (as a developer) find the 30% shares outrageous, especially if you deduce all taxes etc. then not much is left for the creator.
so all in all i wish luck to epic in this fight even if it is a publicity stunt.

they just want to have their own monopoly, they sold the in game currency for 20% off even though apple takes 30% why? cause why not take 10% extra for yourself if you can instead of giving the customer 30% off which would make sense and thats just one thing they are super hypocritical in everything they do imo

I don't hate it nor do I like it. The free games are swell and I got a few games that are lower priced from any of the other services. I don't like that I have a lot of these individual apps that I need to open to play games but a good game's a good game and if I can't wait and the price is lower, I'd buy it from their store.

Though I regret being locked out of my account for like half a year and missing out on a bunch of stuff, I think I've claimed somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 free games on there, many of which seem like things I would want to check out eventually. S'definitely something I appreciate!

So far, I've only played around with, like, Ape Out and Stanley Parable, both for maybe an hour or so. So the Epic Games Launcher is literally just a 'log in and grab free games for potential future use' app for me at the moment; it hasn't become part of my actual gaming routine yet.

People hate them because of their policy of bribing developers for exclusivity (so that developers who even had their Steam pages up essentially leave Steam, usually for a year) and thus stripping users of their platform choice and forcing them on the Epic client or, if they refuse, making them unable to buy and play the desired game. This policy obsesses over developers, but completely disregards the customers, their right of platform choice and their convenience, treating them like mindless sheep who will go where the content is, even if that content is served on a pile of turd.

I don't really like that they giveaway so much games. If i would play new games I would be afraid that if I buy game it would be given away on Epic few weeks later. The fact that Tencent owns 40% of Epic also doesn't help. I really hate Tencent and avoid them if I can.

I don't like Epic mainly because of the following reasons:

  • Exclusivity deals, I consider this anti-consumer and not real competition
  • Ties with Tencent/China government and the suspect behavior of the launcher
  • No official Linux support

As far as I am concerned, Epic has basically burnt their bridges. It will take a lot for them to earn some respect. Recent silliness of trying to rile up fortnight players to fight their platform wars for them makes me like Epic even less.

It seems to be quite fashionable. As a fashion misfit, I'm not particularly fond of Valve, primarily because they are excluding me from the Steam Market and holding my wallet funds hostage until I purchase a new game or DLC directly from the Steam Store or add more funds to the wallet. Also, they spent years and millions of dollars fighting for the right to continue breaking consumer protection law.
