So a couple of weeks ago, on a whim, I reinstalled My Time at Portia and started fresh as it's been a while. I managed to surpass my old save REAL fast and this morning, I saw the ending.I admit that seeing the ending hit me more than I expected. And yes, I do know that you can still play after but the point is the ending sequences.

Probably the reason I'm putting off beating the Walking Dead Final Season too as I've grown attached to Clem.

But I digress and I talk too much.

What are some of the games you remember that made you sad when you saw the endings? Those that you knew were the end of the journey? The ones you didn't want to end?

I have to admit that, even after all these years and playthroughs, Final Fantasy VI still hits me.

So, how about all of you people at SG? Keep in mind that this is not just for endings that were supposed to be sad. This is mainly for games you fell in love with and didn't want to end so were sad when it did end.

I was a closed beta tester for GW Prophecies. Great game. Shame I sucked at PVP and could NEVER get the drops for the Obsidian Armor sets. I did have a couple of Vabbian sets, though.I want my almost 8K hours back!

Dreamfall Chapters ending: mainly because I fell in love with April Ryan and her story when I was 15, and then the story unfortunately digressed from her, and then I hated Ragnar Tornquist - but that ending almost 20 years later was so perfect and so damn nostalgic that I literally shed some tears (not sure if I can call those tears sad though).

+1 On the Mass Effect Series.
That stuff hit me hard near the end. I think it was the first time that I played as a main character who died at the end. For good this time.

I also used to get sad when a cat/dog/other animal died in movies or games (Amores perros, I am looking at you), now I just get really angry at authors for a shameless manipulation.

Evoland 2. Ending is unexpectedly depressing for all 5 main characters, especially if you try to explore everything during the game.
Bioshock Infinite - for obvious reasons.

I've been longing for this one, too. But I didn't really want to care about upset topics. ( And actually, I heard some fresh news about it, but only when it was announced to be released on Switch. )

Oh, now I remembered some other games with endings that make me feel sad :

-Hollow knight ( Every endings )
-Minoria ( More revolting than sad. )
-White Night ( Creepy.. :( And I wasn't very proud about how it ends... )
-Wonder Boy - The Dragon's Trap ( :D ...But only because this great journey came to an end. )

Plus,

Telltale's The Walking Dead
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons

Will add more if I can recall any!

Top three of emotional/tearjerker endings for me:

  1. Valiant Hearts: The Great War
  2. Telltale's The Walking Dead: Season One
  3. Yakuza 0

This is mainly for games you fell in love with and didn't want to end so were sad when it did end.

Personally I don't have any such game, no matter how fond I am of a game I always look forward to an ending to the story. However there have been times where otherwise enjoyable game disappointed me with a poor/hurried ending, and that made me sad instead. I don't wanna start naming those since then I'll have to acknowledge those disappointments once more. :P

For games with shit (sad) endings, Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons immediately comes to mind. Probably one of the most major points it ticks in my Things-I-Don't-Like-In-A-Game™ list. The boring "gameplay" (if I can even call it that) and depressing undertones throughout the game somehow feel even worse when the ending basically makes me go "What was even the fucking point of it all?!".
(And of course The Walking Dead... which, when I think about it, also ticks the same points in my list. <.< )

As for games that made me sad because I had finished them and there was nothing left to do... That would be the majority of games that I've ever played (and not hated, like the above mentioned two). XD
Especially if they were long enough for me to get very attached. The most recent example is Moero Chronicle that I finished last night. The game is not without its flaws but I still liked it and felt really sad when the moment where there just wasn't anything left to do came. :/

Everyone keeps saying Brothers. Maybe that's a sign that I NEED to reinstall and finally try to beat that now.

Yeah, i also played it as well. It's not too long either. I didn't personally get as sadden by it, although I was already aware of the big moment that makes the game sad. I quite enjoy the game in of itself though, the main mechanic of controlling each character with each joystick is pretty cool and unique, and the puzzles are relatively satisfying although I do admit they were a bit simple.

If you're a masochist then sure- go for it. The one silver lining the game has is that it is at least thankfully short. :D
