Edit: Don't know any freeware ones but, ones I've enjoyed a lot would be Dead Island and, yes, you guessed it right, Day Z.

Dead Island, but only if you got some friend to play it together. Single play is boring.

They aren't really alot of sandbox survival games..

I can either say Dead island, dayz, and uhh Dead rising? .-.

Only sand box survival game I can think of is Dead Island. But if you don't like to melee, then that's out. It also has RPG elements such as skill trees and quests. But the best part of the game is you can explore the place on your own, finding zombies randomly. Only bad thing is, there aren't that many zombies. You will find one or two here and there mostly. I don't want something killing floor or L4D where you get waves of zombies. Considering the lack of guns it is understandable though.

It's a pity they don't make such survival horror games anymore. I guess they want more gamers so they make it kiddie friendly.

The Sims

Perhaps Dead Frontier. Runs in the browser and uses the unity engine. Pretty much survival, except end game. Quite difficult at times.

DayZ is a waste of time, as all the admins are cheating children as of now, who'll admin kill you and loot you.

Killing Floor does fit survival. its not scripted like L4D, but its best played multiplayer really.

If you are not against it I really do recommend at least emulating the older Resident Evil games.
