I have a PC with a very outdated videocard. After looking at 1070s and Vega 56 which are either sold out or ridiculously overpriced from original MSRP (due to Bitcoin), I'm seriously considering getting a console. Now the question is which console.

Should I wait for the Xbox One X or just get a PS4, PS4 Pro, Pro or Switch? Ideally I want a console with games that I can't find on Steam (as I'm eventually going to get a new gpu...but don't want to wait for prices to drop to MSRP so going console for now).

PS4 for the current, PS3 for a value. Avoid Nintendo consoles (both handheld and home) if you are on a budget since even with used games, they rarely dip below msrp.

Thanks for the reply. To be fair, Nintendo games (physical releases) also hold their value better than games from other consoles.

That is another way to look at it. They make great games but they really hit the wallet hard. This is why it is best to avoid them all together unless you are comfortable paying $40-60 per title regardless if they are used or not.

If we are talking about Switch, everyone is playing the same games, the selection isn't quite as impressive

Ah yeah, I'm not too involved in console gaming so I tend to forget that there's just about no backward compatibility there...

Edit: Microsofts strides towards backward compatibility and their Play Anywhere effort is the main reason I picked an Xbox One over Playstation. I'm be willing to pay the console tax for games if I have the convenience to play them on both my computer and Xbox. Not that impressed with Play Anywhere this far though.

Yeah no backward compatibility, and streaming only for PSvita. but and i would have to look around to be sure, under PS Now (20$ a month) you can stream to PC and play PS3 titles :|

Anyone content with streaming should probably pick up an Nvidia Shield TV. It's a pretty amazing little thing and I've had no complaints with the streaming during my trial months. I'm personally not interested in renting my games though even as it's pretty great value. Also, as an added value, I don't think there's a better set-top video streaming box out there yet and you get access to a lot the better titles on the Android platform

Something you could do with Nvidia Shield + Moonlight (phone, Psvita, and Tablet)
PC needs a Wired connection, and some devices just have a huge delay. I have a P9 and its simply not playable.
But you would be able to just play your steam library instead of renting

As I said, anyone content with steaming. I generally play stuff that's not sensitive to latency and I'm probably not too sensitive myself on top of this. Geforce Now had a decent library when I tried it out and I reckon it's great for some but it's not for me.

I guess but then you still need to buy the games you want to stream. I'm more talking about their Geforce Now streaming service. I have to admit that I don't know if you're able to stream to any device but I'm guessing not. Besides that, the Shield TV is pretty good bang for the buck if you have any interest in all of its features.

I will not deny that they have amassed the best collection of first party games ever. Even 3rd party games on their handhelds (e.g. Radiant Historia) are solid must buys imo. This does not negate the fact that their games/consoles are very expensive relative to others. Even with used copies, you will be paying a shit ton per game.

The Switch is not worth getting atm. Too few games and the good ones are either found on the WiiU (RIP) or minor tweaked versions of WiiU games (looking at you Splatoon 2).

I tend to forget that you need a crapload of different hardware to play console games. Just going by the statement that he wants to have exclusive content this would be the best choice I take it though, or rather choices :P

I suspect there are other, and more important, reasons behind the decision to go for console though

Actually no, as I'm rarely shopping for used hardware but it's my understanding that you need a pretty decent processor to be able to emulate e.g BotW. What, in your estimation, is the price for a computer able to run BotW better than the hardware it's designed for?

I wouldn't be surprised if there were $300 computers that could do it.

Hmm...i'm sure they have a bigger list for switch than they have for PS3. Still doubt most games run perfectly.

Usually emulator sites have a list, i might give that a look
EDIT: Perfect: 7% (most indie games on PC)
Breath of the wild: major glitches/issues prevent game from being completed

EDIT2: nvm the Ps3 comment, seems like the emulator is fully running

Nothing much, comments on that video, I took a look and even people with good builds can't run it above 30 fps in-game.
How many people under the video have reported to have managed it? i see none

So by normal people you basically mean people that are reporting that they haven't managed to run it at 60 fps yet? :P

we where talking about that patch making the game playable above 30fps, with only a video recorded on a very specific small area, and take it as enough proof that indeed it works, and if it does for how much of the game.

Mostly because of the "$300 computers that could do it" comment.
Doubt most people could, even on mine i would probably be slighlty under 30fps.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Why would you need anything else than a tiny portion of the game as "proof" that the patch works in theory though? I still don't really care if it actually works or not but I can't really see a reason why someone would be lying about it.

Edit: Regarding your edit, yeah I don't see this as plausible at all. From what I understand it takes a beast of a processor to emulate new consoles proficiently and I haven't even seen anyone claiming to run e.g. BotW flawlessly on any kind of hardware yet.

Yes but the potential backlash when people eventually finds out you've been faking it hardly seems worth it in this case. Most of these people seem to be in it for cred, much like cracking groups. Then again I'm not really involved in this and it's entirely possible there are slight exaggerations or even dishonestly involved.

No, not in this case, you proved your point.
It is in fact running at 60fps if atleast near. I never meant to call it fake, just a really isolated example, the boss attack patterns seem a bit sped up. Not faked, game speed is tied to its framerate.
Emulation can be time demmanding. Its good that their supportive. right now it seems only for dungeons at most, and not something you should expect from you PC. but something possible in the near future.

Not currently. Right now, there are more games locked to PS4 than to Switch. At the end of the line, Switch will probably have a dozen of first-party games worth playing while PS4 will probably have a few more due to JRPGs.

Just buy the hardware for your PC if you're an impatient gamer, i.e. want's to play the latest games as quickly as humanly possible. You're not going to save money on buying a console and paying the console tax for all the games you want. Games for consoles are, generally, a lot more expensive than the same titles on PC

Wrongly phrased question. You want to buy a GPU, but your budget is not really good for that, so now you are contemplating on buying an even worse video card attached to a weaker computer you already have, forking over more cash to buy a desktop GPU, or buying the only actual video game console on your list, a Switch.

In my experience, an old (not very old and in good shape) high-end gpu is generally better than a new mid-tier one.
Of course, you shouldn't buy these things from total strangers, since you can't really check how much they're worn. That's why you should ask some friends. Asking costs nothing :D

Ignore AMD GPU's if you don't want to wait. Go for a 1060 for 1080p gaming. I don't recommend console at all for more reasons than overall pricing if you take into account how much you pay in the long run.

The mining craze hit AMD hardware the most, they're just better at mining than Nvidia's and that's by design. As Nvidia avoided compute performance as opposed to rendering performance. That's why they perform pretty well while consuming less power in GaminG.

If you are considering a console, i'd recommend the PS3. I've been considering it myself, but there is one or two games that interest me, so i never bit the bullet. So if you have a list of exclusives available on the PS3, i don't think that'd be a bad idea,
If you want a console for now and make use of it still for the future, the Xbox 1 S seems decent for the price. BluRay player as well as 4K HDR netflix playback [may require updates]. That said, i'm not sure about the support for CrossPlay, but it'd be a bonus to transfer your games as well as saves back to PC when you manage a decent rig.

Just my two cents, i hope it helps. Best of luck and thanks for the GA (i own it, but i love seeing good games being given away).

Here is the complete but definitive answer to that question:

  1. Do you have at least 1200€/$?

    • Yes: Consider a PC (no point if you don't have the accompanying powerful enough CPU/Board/SSD, so we're talking full PC build)
    • No: Your choice is console, if you have a TV or plan on getting one.
  2. Do you prefer solo chair, bedroom, small screen setting or social couch, living room, big TV setting

    • Chair/Screen: PC, it's slower, it's has lags/freeze/bugs, it's longer to operate but you can do everything with it.
    • Couch/TV: PS4 or Switch, just enter the disc or download and play/suspend.
  3. Do you prefer quantity or quality?

    • Quantity: PC has a timeless (no-generations) catalogue and emulators. In fact undifferentiated oceans of it, amongst which lots of crap.
    • Quality: PC, or PS4/Switch depending on your type. Of course, the criteria is exclusives (Xbox One has almost none).
  4. Do you prefer western/action/online/fps games or global/narrative/cinematic/graphical games or eastern/arcade/accessible/fun games?

    • 1: Go for a PC: you get easy access to tons of F2Ps, all the FPS in their highest settings and emulators.
    • 2: Go for a PS4: you get the highest quality selection of highly crafted cinematic and graphical adventure, action, sport games.
    • 3: Go for a Switch: you (will) get a good quality selection of highly crafted game design adventure, platform, arcade and multiplayer games.

Overall:

  1. Price sets your destiny.
  2. The settings you prefer tells a lot about what you'd enjoy more.
  3. In the end it's about wether you prefer an undifferentiated ocean of crap amongst which big but redundant AAA titles highest settings, or a selection of highly crafted exclusives games you're all going to want to play, either the cinematographic graphically impressive action/adventure/platform ones on PS4, or the great and fun game design and gameplay you find on platform/adventure/arcade game on Switch
  4. Haven't you decided yet?

I have a PS4 a Switch and a... quite decent PC. Switch is a newborn, there's not much worth to it right now besides Breath of The Wild and Splatoon 2. PS4 is stuffed with games you find on Steam, but some (perhaps temporary) exclusives are quite worth it, like Persona 5 (wonderful JRPG), Let it Die (a cyberpunk Dark Souls) and Horizon Zero Dawn (I really don't have words to describe this one), plus the officially exclusive ones like Uncharted, The last of Us and God of War.

I would take advantage of this 'opportunity' to experience all the exclusives you haven't played yet! Though I personally think that the PS3 is where it's at, atm. The hardware is cheap, and so are the games. There are a bunch of console exclusives on it (including PS1 and PS2 classics) and you can stream most PSP/PSVITA games if you purchase a PSTV, which is around 20 bucks. If you're looking for multiplayer games though, I would go for the PS4 - which is starting to have a respectable list of exclusives of its own. Just be warned that you will need to sub to PSPlus, though you do gain access to a few mystery games each month to sweeten the deal.

I have pretty much everything except for a PS4 (been waiting for a good deal)
I would first and foremost put the PC ahead of a console purchase, but i agree pricing is crap due to mining. (I've been waiting for a year to buy a 1080ti, but refuse to pay over $1k for a GPU, but they HAVE to come down soon right??)

Having said that.. I wouldn't touch Nintendo atm unless it's a decent second hand Wii U maybe (for a cheap temporary option until you get the GPU)
If none of your friends have consoles (Then you should buy what they have so you can play with them) then i would say get a PS4pro as it is the best there is atm, until the XboneX comes out. But even then.. what games will it make a difference to? Also look at exclusives.. go for what ever has the most exclusives you'd prefer to play.
Good luck :)

If the sole reason that you want a console is to play games you can't find on steam, I'd have to say any Nintendo Console, since they always have, by far, the highest number of exclusives in the console market. However, if you're not a fan of their exclusives - zelda, mario, pokemon, etc-, go with the ps4, since it's has the second biggest exclusive library.
