This is huge news:

Introducing GOG Connect
GOG Connect

Important: You can connect only one Steam account with your GOG.com library. This process is permanent – choose wisely!

Important 2: If you own some of the games and Connect doesn't recognize them, press the Refresh button and wait a while (can be a few minutes, hours or even a day). The reason for this is that GOG is using the Steam API to scan your Steam library and the API has a limit on the number of calls it can make for a given period of time. If you're still having problems, refresh your GOG account (simply clicking the link is enough; this is different that the Refresh button on the GOG Connect page!).

Important 3: In case you are still getting the message "Due to exceedingly high demand this may take up to several days, please check back later. Thank you for your patience." after waiting a while and trying the account refresh link above, then it would be a good idea to contact GOG support. Many users have reported that their problem was fixed quickly after that.

Connect your Steam account and grow or jumpstart your GOG.com library.

Today, we're launching a new program called GOG Connect. The premise is simple: connect your Steam account and add your eligible games to your GOG.com library.

Whether you're checking us out for the first time or have been with us for a while, GOG Connect gets you DRM-free versions of your games, digital extras, and a whole lot of freedom of choice (like whether you go with the GOG Galaxy client or not). It gets you our take on game ownership, and we say: why buy the games more than once?

While GOG Connect will stick around, the available games will come and go. These are limited-time offers made possible by participating developers and publishers, so stay tuned as we bring new titles onboard in the future (and grab your copies before they go away)!

I really hope more games are made available, because this could raise GOG's popularity significantly!

The list of games in the OP, along with Surgeon Simulator 2013 from the first edit, are no longer possible to connect. Which is a damn shame, since I had almost all of them, and only one of the new batch.

there were even more games. I got 8 games synchronized out of the approx. 20 games (if not a bunch more).

the funny thing is that I asked for the sync, it said that the servers were busy and I have to wait and a few days when I tried to do it again, it wasn't available anymore.

I saw other posts on their own thread with the same situation. I think the idea is great and could lead to more users engaging with the Galaxy platform... but so few people seem to be aware of the Connect service. It also seems to be hindered by overloaded services. Alas, first world problems.

I tried to get Two Worlds. When I clicked on connect it was shown at the bottom that this game is available. But it said "no eligible game found". After refreshing the site, they changed the games. So I guess I was a few seconds too slow xD

I was just looking through my GOG library a moment ago and noticed that while I own the Surgeon Simulator Anniversary Edition on Steam, on GOG after connecting I only have the base game. Not that I'm complaining, mind you, as it's still marvellous to have the game added gratis, but it does make me wonder if DLC owned on eligible Steam games will carry over to GOG in the future.

Just guessing but it might be the same issue with Steam API not reporting DLC properly that leads to DLC being so annoying here on SG.

i have heard getting access to owned dlcs is a problem with the steam api.
I assume its a problem with that.

It's a limitation of Steam's API. There's no way to get Steam to list the DLC you own. It's the same reason you can enter giveaways here on steamgifts.com for DLC that you already have.

By the way is it possible to use the Connect feature (to scan my Steam Libary for new availabe games) from the Galaxy Client ? If not they really should add that.

I guess it's just a matter of waiting. After the Steam sales, many people are trying to connect to GoG.

Didn't even know about this until I read this post. I at least had Shadowrun Returns that should have worked, but it looks like there's a time limit and i missed the intro period. So do I not get to add anything now? If that's the case then the whole thing is kind of gonna alienate me from GOG rather than "jumpstart my library" and make me think about buying more things there.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If you missed the time limit, then yes, you missed it. They could only convince publishers to dish out free DRM-less versions of products bought elsewhere if the games can be activated in a short window.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

^^ Pretty much this.

There's an old saying: you snooze, you lose.

I know it sucks if someone misses the boat but it can't wait forever (as per the reason you pointed out). If it were a permanent offer or lasted too long there would be no incentive for anyone to buy these games from GOG, which is obviously not good long-term for business.

They left the option open that they'll repeat those windows

Keep in mind that they have to find developers willing to give away their games for free since I doubt GOG is paying them out of their own pocket.

They cycle the games periodically and only for a limited time. They do not have any up at the moment. Keep checking back for future updates.

Honestly, we should all be grateful that we got anything at all. It was actually kind of an unconventional move in this industry on the part of GOG as well as the developers/publishers involved and I have to give them kudos for that.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Agreed. I love GOG and have been really happy with their service. I mostly buy older titles from them, but it is worth it just to have them work without having me fight with DOSBox or booting up my old 80486 I have sitting in a closet.

Obtaining free copies of games I've already bought on Steam, only with amazing support and goodies, is an amazing bonus!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well it's strange for the main reason, I didn't know how that thing worked, so its looked weird.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

When there was an active batch, the games you could get a free copy for were listed under "Available games". Since there is no such batch at the moment, this list is now empty and therefore you (and everyone else) won't have any eligible games.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Hmm still nothing new.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, they said it was experimental. Most likely the publishers were not satisfied with the results or GOG decided to not pursue it further.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Even if it would be 1 game a month, if GOG decided that they could atleast announce it saying hey it didn't work out the way we planned and we are going to end it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Good point. It wouldn't be the first experimental feature they just let to be forgotten though without much explanation.
I'd like if it was 1-3 titles a month too. Something to keep many people coming back. But I fear they think it'd be like some Origin accounts, where the library consists of On the House titles mostly. But unlike EA, they cannot just give away games without loss (well, apart from the Witchers).

The reclaim feature was never about getting DRM-free copies of DRM-encumbered games, it was about getting GOG copies by way of physical game CD keys. Think of it in the same manner as how Steam let you activate certain games on Steam with product keys instead of with Steam keys.

Well, that's how I understood it, and taking a fresh look at it, that's certainly how the functionality seems to currently apply.

Gotcha. When it was brought to my attention, it was in a way that emphasized the "There are countless retail games out there that don’t work for various reasons: unsupported types of DRM, system incompatibilities, broken features. " bit, and I recalled it being part of their 'you shouldn't have to pay twice for a game' push. I likely misremembered based off that part of it.

Either way, your point stands that they do tend to try new approaches in such matters pretty often. And "This is just the start of something much bigger. We plan to add more titles to the list in the future" definitely emphasizes the heart of your point rather well. :P

That's a vague answer that doesn't actually say anything.
My guess would be that, due to the how well the initiative went, publishers aren't easily inclined to send free keys.
Only time will tell what will become of GOG Connect...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, of course, it's a vague answer. If they had something concrete, they would have announced it or said nothing, if they thought of abandoning it altogether. "It will be ready, when it's ready (in whatever form)."

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There were a notable amount of early bugs/issues, according to the e-mail reply I got from them when I reported my own bugs. They said they'd take their time moving forward to make sure those issues were addressed before putting strong efforts into it again- that reddit post seems to echo those comments rather closely.

Given that, it's really hard to say if they're finding it more effort than they'd expected, or if they're putting strong efforts into shoring things up before they dive back in fully.
Flip side, perhaps it'll be like Origin's On the House, and be a rarely updated affair that lasts over an indefinite duration.

As you say, there's really no point in speculating about it until there's more to work with. :P

More games were eligible, but I don't own them:

  • AI War Fleet Command
  • Anno 1404 Gold Edition
  • Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition
  • Cossacks Anthology
  • The Last Federation
  • OlliOlli
  • X: Gold
  • X Rebirth
  • Ziggurat

Refreshing a few times worked for me as well after several attempts for my remaining titles but not for Anno 1404.
