Just wondering if devs actually go thru with their word when they claim they will give a free copy of XXXX and YYYYY if their game gets Greenlit

I've seen it dozens of times on this forums.

One good example was when this dev had this extremely shite "simulator" game (something akin to toilet simulator), and he said he will give a free copy of that game + something else to everyone who voted.

The thread was filled with "looks like a fun game, voted. thanks", when clearly these were people sucking up to get free games.

Side note: if you wanna have fun, go through these threads and see if the dev's came thru with their promises, obviously remember that you can't call out people (-.-)

It does happen however it's considered EXTRA HERETICAL to do so with any respectable member of the community.

There are also a few cases where people come on and cry cause they haven't been given a free game for their participation of the abuse of the Steam Greenlight system. The whole process is actually against Greenlight Terms of Service, but at the same time Valve are unwilling to clamp down on while they provide the means for people to exploit it. A rather bizarre situation all round.

Is it actually against the TOS? I've never heard anyone say that before. if it's not I think it should be anyway!

Counts as soliciting which is against TOS on Steam Community and in the smallprint of Greenlight.

Will it get enforced at all however? No. Also it is a bit of a grey area and will get worse once Valve abandon all quality controls and allow self publishing.

I remember one developer for a game I can't remember that changed the "this game will be free for all on Steam if greenlit" to "nope, you will have to pay for it now" when reached the votes he wanted. Many fall for the "free" before it was changed, but few noticed that and changed their vote to "No". If someone remember the game, please tell... After that, I don't know if eventually that game got greenlit.

I know it was some shitty platformer that appeared on Playfire Rewards, the guy deleted it's Greenlight page afterwards to remove the evidence too

Biart also promised the keys for Depth Hunter for previous buyers but when they got greenlit they removed the part when they said they will try to provide the keys and then changed the greenlight page to completly different game and said "Nope. It's a completly different game. No keys for you."

Before getting greenlit.
Now.

So you can't even trust people you payed for the game.

Sounds like you're talking about Blob from Space.

The dev did decide to go with a mercenary publisher instead of Greenlight, and obviously you have to start charging then. No publisher is gonna go for a game that's just free with no strings attached.

He's actually giving out game keys to people who signed up for the "supporter DLC", which was the voting bribe before it was taken off Greenlight.

To be fair, he had it on Greenlight, and it wasn't going through. As unbelievable as it seems, only some games get through Greenlight, not all of them. Some of them need to turn to publishers, and this one didn't just say "Nothing for you" once they did so.

Just the fact that there are 4 different people saying "oh you're thinking of game XXXXX", "oh you mean YYYYYYYY", shows that devs using these tactics are mega turds

You may be right. I checked all the games and none of these are the game I was talking about... (-_-)
If there were a way to check for my posts on Greenlight pages I could find it, because I commented in that game's Greenlight page about that.

You mean like the Grass Simulator devs that used ppl to make their game greenlit, and now their game will be free to play, I guess game was planned to be f2p from the start, but they liked to make "vote and get it for free if its greenlit" before revealing it.

I voted for games that gave keys for everyone, now if you look on Whos Gaming Now some devs of Greenlight games became greedy, and they give only 100-300 keys for voting, and thousands of ppl vote, and less than 5% gets the game, so they just use that 95% of ppl.

When all is done correctly keys for every voter its fine, even if game is bad, but lots of devs tried to throw away as much ppl as they could, like making new requirements when not a lot of ppl see it, etc.

I think change didn't actually come from devs, but WGN due to abuse related to key for vote, many would 'beg' for keys, even when they didn't reverse keys.

Cool, now this means they're abusing voters by giving keys only for a little part of them. Which is better voters abusing keys and Steam Greenlight or devs/WGN abusing voters and Greenlight?

I don't think it's abusing. You know that you enter for (usually) only small chance. Technically you don't even have to vote, if you don't want.

Source of this? cause i dont know of such

When there is limited amount of keys , they clearly indicate if its that the case so please check your source before spreading misinformation

Beggars are irrelevant from that regard, especially with the no begging rules in place

I have to say I join some of those stuff. But I don't vote, I simply join their group(or whatever method they are using) and hope for the best.
I only vote those that I believe it has potential. The rest, meh, but free cards!

I do keep a list of promised keys. I don't include the raffles. So far everyone has come through with a key. There's a lot currently lit, but not on steam yet. So we'll see if the trend continues.

Only problems I've seen have been with a few bundled games, where the dev argues they didn't promise keys or changed the name of the game.

Saw that, but didn't have that bundle. Body Changer (greenlight added after bundled) and Depth Hunter (changed release to Depth Hunter 2) where the two I was referring.

While not greenlight, 1C has been known to release games from bundles and refuses to give keys (looking at you Freight Tycoon and Fairytale).

Don't forget all the devs that promise key for bundles and then decide it don't worth it when it's greenlit.

Also don't forget devs who don't directly promise keys but ask to vote and then say "lol no keys for you"

Not really swayed by freebies in that sense and the one thing I did vote on with a freebie hasn't come out on steam yet, but the freebie is just a nice extra and not the main reason why I voted.

I've got more of the 'greenlight promos' than the ones promised by bundles. Aside from that, there is only one that I can remember that promised and didn't deliver, and that's Forsaken Uprising. I voted and joined their group and not long before they released on Steam I was inexplicably kicked from their group and of course couldn't rejoin. I tried sending an email asking what happened but have received no reply.

Blob from Space would have been another, I emailed the dev though why asking they were charging for the game (it was supposed to be F2P), and he said they didn't get through greenlight and had to find a publisher, therefore they are charging for it. I personally accepted that, he said all the greenlight supporters would still get free DLC, as promised, and that they wanted that DLC to be good so it wasn't released on day 1. I ended up getting a key through WGN anyway though, so that was nice.

Why I vote? If I see potential in a game, I usually vote yes anyway, whether there's an incentive or not. Secondly, I believe that no matter how crappy a game may look, someone put their hard work into it, and spent money putting it on Greenlight in hopes of getting their game out to the world. I'm all for freedom of choice, and if you don't like a game, just don't buy it. I see people complain about the quality of games getting through, but really, there are reviews and even demos for most games, I really see no reason to complain.
