This was always the kind of game where the hype would last a week before being sent to the bottom of everyone's libraries.

It's 10 dollars, are you really saying 10 dollars is expensive? And do you really think the creators of the game wantes to charge people for it? They made the game as a joke, they only finished and released it because everyone loved the idea. They only charge 10 bucks because they spent resources on it and they need some of it back. I doubt they were even thinking of getting profit from it.

As andreadandrea stated, Minecraft was included as a time limited trial in one of the Humble Bundle.
When referring to developers, indie typically means without financial support from a publisher. Sierra funded Valve's development of Half-Life, thus they were not indie.

It was never launched on the market as a serious game, it couldn't have survived much

After seeing it on Giant Bomb, I'm hooked (http://www.giantbomb.com/videos/quick-look-goat-simulator-2014/2300-8709/) and it is quite a short game. People might be playing it then moving on to other games that take an average of 8+ hours to play.
Going off charts & demographics might be good for the math obsessed but with all games on steam, you find what's fun & play it, screw what the hype is telling or not telling you.

Big patch with multiplayer new map and a few new goats due soon though. And for free. The devs are surprisingly supportive for a game they themselves claim is not worth the money.

That's weird... it's almost as if it's been out for months...
And like many games before it, fewer players are playing... how about that.

Game just got updated with a lot of new features, like people can ride the goat, the goat can ride bikes. (As well as some other things in the steam update log.) This gives me a good reason to play it again. Then after I get through all the new content I will probably have a month or so where it just sits on my computer. Then the next update I will play it again. Eventually I hope it will get steam workshop and there will be an extremely high replay ability once people are given a way to customize it and make their own maps.

The number of players is dropping quite drastically, I think the hype popped already.
