i was answering to Paddy but, before hitting Submit Comment, Paddy closed the thread.
this kinda things saddens me. a ton.
now i'm quite sure that "Patreon", "SG Patreon", here around, is something peeps really don't care to know what actually is.
so they've just misunderstood the whole thing, english speakers included.
that's worse than ignorance, that's craving for ignorance.
they've asked Paddy where were the Steam keys.
there's no Steam Keys inside the Patreon. you pay actual money and you get Z E R O.
that's it.
but, luckily, SG also has peeps like you, that can make you smile, ogain.
thank you.
aaaand now: bump!

It's so hard to fix my leecher like WL/BL ratio when hypocrites only ever BL low level users for the same exact thing. Just like dollar bundles, for a while many were raging about them and BLing people left and right who got CV from them, but when I started making threads with giveaways for them, suddenly it turned into the best thing ever. Life just is not fair.

Tried in the previous thread, but... :)
Thank you for providing a fresh excuse to mention it, the second best thing about the Steamgifts patreon... :)
It's... Monty Python's Flying Circus The Steamgifts Patreon Boobie Tier! :)

I really dont wanna be rude but Im scratching my head a bit as to what exactly should we react to this thread? Agreeing with you that the amount of patrons CG has is indeed laughably small? Condemn people for not chipping in in bigger numbers?
Now if it was to give it more visibility: you can already see the banner on the bottom of the page. And what comes about the willingness of people opening up their wallets: well, you cannot exactly force people to pay monthly to help with the site costs, now can you?
I know you mean good but alas this wont suddenly incentivise people

I wrote a comment a while ago
It is not interesting to make the same comment on the same content.β(Β΄Ξ`)β
Let's think in reverse.
Big problem! I can not be a supporter because I have no money!
Let's think about a source of income that all SG participants can become a patron.
Everyone will be on YouTuber!
It needs about 2000 audience subscribers and long play times and content to play.
γΎοΎ'Ξ'o)Unreal! (Can I raise the CG? Is it possible?)
Dig virtual currency at the SG site!
(Need to confirm the legal issues of each country)
(What is the high priced virtual currency?)
(Is electricity bill higher?)
(No, I won't dig! Let's make SG coins!)
Let's get in a little easier job and earn!
("Easy" work does not exist!)
(There is no employment)
(Not human!)
(Monetary value is a problem!)
I can not use "patron" because I do not have continuous income
(CG makes a one-off receipt on PayPal!)
(Create a donation window for unused Steam keys!)
(In fact, some countries can not use PayPal donations by law.)
Thinking so far, I realized that I was still incompetent.(οΎΞ`)

If you're thinking cryptocurrency mining, yes it increases your electricity bill and it's blocked by default by the main browsers I think (and rightfully so, as this is pure hell for people who always have dozens of tabs opened)

Don't buy one or two ice creams, but give those $3 to Steamgifts instead. Once in a month. A'right or just continue leeching what you're doing.

When using a service that assigns a common "simple credit card number".
It costs an additional 200 yen fee for 2000 yen.
If you set this to PayPal, there will be an additional exchange fee.
The world is not moving with the dollar and the euro alone.
And even if you are not using it, the account maintenance fee will be collected.
In that case, it would be more meaningful to grab and distribute the game key for the user.
I am sad that the planet is a planet without a unified currency.
No, it is strange that there is a currency in the first place.
I need to make it invisible to humans.
It is bad for me to live hiding near the riverside? π₯

i think you're wrong, here, The Mully.
cause you're still mixing giveaways with patreon.
you could, say, be a level 0, with zero GA's, still being subscribed to top tier of SG Patreon.
won't discuss which type of giveaway is the best to inspire the peeps, but as it's you:
you've donated, contributed, shared, supported and kept the air fresh, here around. and you're still doing it...
personally, you've often being the reason to stay, to keep on giving. to smile again.
but, if one day, you'll pay for Patreon, you really would do a different thing. still supporting, but differently.
also, more bothering stuff, just cause it's you :
you -quite surely- know more about cg than me, but take two seconds a read the last part of Fyantastic comment ("It kind of surprises me.."), cause he is very very -but very- right (as usual)...
+<3, obviously
:D

There's a "Do not ask users for payments or donations for any reason" joke in here somewhere, but it's too late at night for me to form it in a way to actually be funny. :D
I posted my thoughts on patreon elseware, but I'll post it here too.
I don't see a problem with setting up a Patreon to give users of the site a way to say thank you for providing the service. Unfortunately, there aren't many people that would do that just out kindness in their hearts. I would say there's a number of things that he could try to make it more appealing for the average SGer to sub to the Patreon.
I would set a base price of 5-6$ a month and give users the benefits from all current tiers, as I imagine most of those that are patreons are on the 3$ a month tier anyways. It kind of surprises me that cg isn't doing more to try to turn a profit from this website, to be honest. It really speaks volumes to his character.

I'm not a big fan of Donations on a reoccuring basis.
That's a thing I would do if I would have a child studying elsewhere & being needy, but not on a site with 1 Million+ members I don't know nothing about financial wise.
However I would consider a one-time-donation here and then, like I'm doing with free software that I like and support.
A feature that I was missing from the beginning.
While it's not a steady source of income, it at least is something.

Yeah, the subscription part is a big killer, I think. $3 a month... $36 a year... think of all the gibs held hostage with that kind of money o_o To contribute that way I'd have to use the site less π
Ah, and don't get me started on the exchange rate... ._.

I think patreon isn't well-suited to single donations, but I don't know if that's by design or just one of those things... According to https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/204606215-Can-I-make-a-one-time-payment-
For now, the best way for a patron subscribe to a creator with a one-time payment is to become a patron then simply cancel their membership after they have been successfully billed. You'll know when you have been billed because you'll receive an email confirmation stating your payment has successfully processed.
Which is true, I guess, but not terribly convenient. And you're trusting patreon not to accidentally re-subscribe you, should they decide to turn evil or something...
I suspect a single-time paypal (or something) option would get a few bucks from people, now and again. Maybe not enough to make a big difference, but more than the zero it's currently getting. :)
Comment has been collapsed.
This is what I did...subscribe, donate a lump sum of what I wanted, then cancelled. I haven't be resubbed or anything.
Comment has been collapsed.
I agree. I became a Patreon for a short time, donated a lump sum amount of what I wanted to donate, and then cancelled. It was basically a one-time donation with no recurrence and no silly "rewards."
Comment has been collapsed.
To me, this isn't a Patreon, just a sub option, and I have no interest in that. Sure, it's on that site, but it doesn't really provide what I'd normally expect from a Patreon, which is support for a creator and an opportunity to communicate with that creator. This typically comes with goals which tell me what the creator would do if a certain level of support was reached. The SG Patreon has nothing of this. I have no idea what the money will be used for, no idea what plans there are, no communications giving me any interesting information about SG. So what's the point?
Comment has been collapsed.
do you know who cg is, even a little?
Dano said a similar thing, up here, asking for a little of transparency.
we surely are different, especially when it comes to money. but asking cg how he'll use mine, is useless.
and very uninteresting.
and kind of a spoiler... :D
not saying you're wrong, ET3D, we're just talking about our site... cause we care!
that said, i'm 100% sure our admin doesn't like this thread, and didn't liked when i've tried to speak about SG Patreon in a previous thread. and i'm sorry if so.
but this one is here just to show that you really can't treat peeps (Paddy) that way, making him close his thread, and then asking for "more participation". Le Nope!
Comment has been collapsed.
I have no idea what the deal is with Paddy, and not going to make the effort to look for that thread.
I don't know about cg. If he created the Patreon, surely he doesn't mind if we talk about it.
As for supporting the site, well, I mean, don't people do that by making giveaways? cg isn't the one who keeps this site alive, it's the people who participate in it. Why would we want or need to pay over that?
And sure, some people like surprises. They subscribe to Humble Monthly, they buy GMG's random keys, that kind of stuff. But not everyone. The point is, if there was an effort to draw more people, there would likely be more people. There's zero effort, so that appeals to a certain number of people who don't need a further incentive. And apparently that number is small.
Edit: Remembered your first question. The answer is: I think I knew something about him early on. But I don't remember much. That's another part of why it's not really a Patreon.

rude
about ads, and tracking: i know i'm weird and pretty much alone on this, but i don't care about Analytics (if you're "capable" to read that data for the better, you're really welcome to do it) and like, i do like to see some ads, now and then... (so that i'd put those also in Discussions)
Comment has been collapsed.
but i don't care about Analytics
Thats sad.
Even Metadata can give away so much information you surley don't want the wrong people to know. Targeted ads are one thing (like target showing your father ads for babysupply evene before you told him that you're pregnant or even started looking for babystuff, just because you changed you hygenic products) but at one point we and up having insurance being cancled or raised, when you buy the wrong things and many many more.
Everyone who does not care, what happens with his private data (inculding metadata) has not even grasped the concept of big data.

Yep. Could not agree more. As it happens just finished watching The Great Hack - by no means the best doc I've ever watched, but it does cover a lot of ground and gets its main points across.

Whatever the VAT in your country is on top of the donation.
Comment has been collapsed.
I tried it once and it added VAT just fine, from 5 to 6.x. It's more about the principle than money, everything is already taxed to death here and donations are always exempt from taxes. So until they fix it to only calculate VAT for their cut which is the commercial service the tax applies to I won't be giving anything through them.

Giveaways here aren't worth anything at all. If the site is popular enough to draw advertising money, then cg will make money. If the site is not popular enough, then it will fail. Propping up a failing giveaway site with patreon money has no upside.
Very different than e.g. supporting an artist whose work you value.
Comment has been collapsed.
Giveaways here aren't worth anything at all.
LOL if theres no value in giveaways that you can win, then why use the site at all other than giving games?
By using the site that implies some amount of value is being assigned to games you win here.
Comment has been collapsed.
I mean precisely that they are worth nothing in the context of the question about paying money via patreon. I pay nothing now. I am not inclined to pay anything. If my donation via patreon was all that was keeping the site from closing, I would still not pay anything.
Comment has been collapsed.
sorry but i'm only now getting aware of what you meant...
also, again sorry cause that was kinda badly phrased: is not "cg", it's basically "Google" that says: if you disclose revenues (you get from hosting our ads) you also show how much profitable would be your site for advertisers (or, if you want, the "value" of ads i -Google- am selling to those advertisers).
also, more in general, is always better not disclose any info about these ads you're hosting. you can obviously talk about ads in general.
...
so, rob, now you should better "get" my starting point. i mean, i hope :D
Comment has been collapsed.
no, it's not literally tied, Pete. you're still talking about a different thing. i'm only talking about Google ads term of service (or whatever the name).
as i know that, i've never asked about transparency and why the need of a Patreon...
edit: also, a question for you about a "more sg" thing: how many giveaway's pages do you think the typical sgifter actually opens?
(sorry was "little" furious cause we made delete another account. really not nice, i'd say. that's also why i've re-opened this. thanks for those cents, always appreciated)

You did not get my point at all.
Me supporting the site = the ~90 games that I gave away.
Does the site need money for it to survive, to upgrade, to add new content, I will pitch up if it is necessary@
If not, I will not ... that easy!
I don't care for the cosmetics that is what I was saying ...
Comment has been collapsed.
What I am saying is that when the cosmetics are irrelevant to donating, you don' t need to list them to make it appear that you would donate if they just were better.
And not just you, also talking about the very common attitude that a donation is buying some goods or service and it needs to be worth the donation for you to care.
Comment has been collapsed.
I want to see the rest of that video. Did he fall?
Comment has been collapsed.
I never said that I would donate if those were better, I already said when I would donate!
"Does the site need money for it to survive, to upgrade, to add new content, I will pitch up if it is necessary"
But those are not good to attract patrons, also this is already charity, that was the point of this site ... so making a thread to say that people should donate when they are already doing so with games is ... get it.
Comment has been collapsed.
And I never said you said that. You said when you would donate only after my response to your initial post which made it appear like it's mainly about the perks not being good enough. That is still all I am saying if you bother reading.
You're not donating games to the site but its users. Server bills can't be paid by someone winning Skyrim just like IRL charities also have to pay rent, bills etc to keep running. So why wouldn't users who really like this site and want to support to keep it running in the long term make posts about helping it?
Comment has been collapsed.
LOL ... I hope I don't need to explain this.
the 65 patrons do not sustain this site, the GA made by users do!
You can remove the patreons and the site will still be here, remove the GA and it is done!
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, that's what I said. :)
But also no. I mean, of course it's the gifters that keep the site alive, but we don't know what the server situation is or how much the site is making from ads. It's theoretically possible that the patrons are keeping the servers up, and if they're gone the site would be losing money and therefore die. I don't think that's the case, I just think that Patreon can serve a purpose. Unfortunately without any accountability it's impossible to know if and how that money serves SG.
Comment has been collapsed.
And if you remove the site there will be no more GAs. If the server bill doesn't get paid or cg gets bored of working for free for ungrateful people there will be no more site. What really baffles me is that people imagine nobody is using adblockers so the ads I hear about provide some major revenue.
Without SG the gifters are nothing.
Comment has been collapsed.
I already answered this from the start:
"Does the site need money for it to survive, to upgrade, to add new content, I will pitch up if it is necessary"
At this should be done by CG and he should provide where the money goes to those that give the money and so on.
And no, the GA's are more important then the patreon, if the revenue is not enough we will pitch for the site.
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't mind donating one time but I'm not going to put in the work to cancel a monthly donation just because there's no one time donation option here. Add a PayPal link or something for those of us who wish to donate money using other methods. Personally I think Patreon is often abused. It's getting as bad as gofundme and the like.
Comment has been collapsed.
Thinking about it some more, supporting SG would feel like a waste to most people. People who are mainly 'leechers' would see no point in paying money they could have spent on buying games. For people who contribute, it's money they could spend on buying more games to give. It's like a charity site asking you to sub to the site, knowing that none of that money would go to charity (and knowing that the charity is already getting money just from the normal donations). So basically that option is for 'whales', who feel they can both splurge on games to gift and also support the infrastructure.
