Here is some interesting information for you (yes, pretty much, but it may be interesting for you):
There are ships. Some of them are battleships, which are heavy, they weight is measured with hundreds thousands tons. So, what do you need to move such big thing?
A big engine. Nowadays most of them use nuclear reactors, which produce also hundreds thousands horse power. But let's say in World War II, there were no such things, but you still needed the power. What did you use? Diesel engines. Ok, but how can such an engine produce this much of power? How big would it have to be? Well, several floors high.
And what's more, a typical diesel engine works from 800 to 5500 (some can do 6500) revolutions per minute, lorry diesels do 800-2500 RPM, but to save fuel, a big ship engine worked even with 10-100 RPM! Of course, smaller ships make more RPM, because their engines are smaller.
