Hi SGers,

I feel like my pc is outdated for the more ''demanding'' games. I've tried increasing dedicated video RAM in the BIOS but it is maxed at 128mb. So I'm guessing I have no choice but to upgrade it.
So I'm wondering what I should upgrade (between my video card or CPU), so that it meets the minimum specs. Preferably, something not too expensive. Also, wondering if these upgrades would fit into my pc once I buy them...?
Thanks for helping.

EDIT: I'll save for a new pc instead, thanks for help everyone.

It'll be too expensive so...

Personally speaking, I'd upgrade the whole thing.
Any newer GPU you get is going to be choked by the CPU with newer games.

Spending a buttload on a new GPU isn't going to be as worthwhile if your CPU isn't holding its own.

Can't I buy a new CPU to replace? (I'm not very in this subject)

You could, yes, but then it'll be your video card holding your back.
No offense, but that machine is old as dirt (relatively speaking), It was nice back in its day, but its day is long past.

I'd suggest suffering it out a bit longer until you can save up enough for an entirely new machine.

Both should be upgraded, but if you do, might as well buy a new machine.

What is your budget and mainboard (brand + full code)?

Haven't decided on a budget, but if I have to buy a new pc then I guess no point in continuing this thread. I guess Ill have to save up.
Currently using PACKARD BELL IMEDIA S J18G1TU01.006

Looks like it's a pre-built machine. Can't find any information about the mainboard. If you can open up the case and check what mainboard brand it's using, upgrading could be an option.

Everything.
If that's your current pc, they trying to run anything short of a Pop Tart will not work well at all.

Yep, I have to agree, you need a better GPU, and for that you need a better CPU.

What you could do, without changing the whole computer is to find a used Core2Quad 6600... and maybe used GTX770 or GTX960. Even 950 would make wonders. And while Q6600 is old like your current CPU, having that powerful quad would make your computer... maybe not a teenager again, but like, get it from 65 year old grandpa to 42 year old second youth.

The reason for suggesting these used components is that your mainboard wouldn't accept any of the new CPUs. You know the alternative, buying completely new computer but... right now prices of everything new are skyrocketing in the entire world... so...

I'm wondering why I should buy a new computer instead of just replacing the parts. If I replace the CPU its cheaper isnt it?

You might have to replace the mobo just to accommodate the new cpu .

You'll need to replace other vital parts like e.g. motherboard, RAM and/or PSU to support and be compatible with your new CPU and GPU, it's definitely easier to just buy a new system entirely or, as NB recommended, look for used or older components to at least bring a little bit of life back into your current rig.

Yes. I don't know where you live and what the prices are there, but Q6600 is on par in most video games with 1st and 2nd generation i5 (and if you've been following i-series, you know "new features" only came with the latest 8th generation, people still use i5 2xxx today with no issues or slowdowns) and would give you enough of power to support a nice GPU with 2GB vram like 770 or 950.

I'm guessing you could get both together for less than $150 total.

If you were to change CPU for a new type with a different slot (LGA) it would mean switching from DDR2 to DDR3 or DDR4, which means new motherboard and... well, much more than $150 which you'd spend for RAM only.

Etherium miners buy all the GPUs worldwide and even if you can get one, it's gonna be so expensive it's ridiculous. For some reason CPU prices are really high too lately.

You could add a cheap video card (a second hand GTX 960 or a new GTX 1050Ti for example) but only if your motherboard has a PCI-Express slot. The Celeron J1900 is installed on a mini-ITX motherboard (FCBGA1170) and not all of them have expansion slots. Furthermore, the CPU is not replaceable, it's soldered to the motherboard. Your Celeron is a slow quad core (2 GHz), most modern games will bottleneck it.

If your motherboard has no PCI-Express then you'll have to buy a new computer.
