Just looking for some game series ideas, if you know of a game series trilogy that is just something that you can think back to fondly, or nails the story and continuity throughout the series.. please share your thoughts! There is no GA in this post, but doesn't mean there won't be a GA :)

My only request is that suggestions are a trilogy (max) with connected story arcs, not just the same universe.

Thanks :)

GA Deadline Expired 2026-01-09, but please feel free to continue the conversation.

Andromeda is a spin off and set in the same universe. There's pretty much no connection to the ME trilogy.

"In contrast to the original Mass Effect trilogy, which was spearheaded by BioWare's Edmonton studio, Mass Effect: Andromeda was handled by a new team out of Montreal."

I suppose it depends on how you define a trilogy. If a series has three games but then gets a standalone reboot years later, does that mean it's a tetralogy despite one game having no connection to the rest?

The first three Mass Effects are directly connected, so much that their remasters have been combined into a single package (Legendary Edition).

Andromeda uses the IP but it's almost entirely standalone. The entirety of the plot and characters from the others are ignored, and it takes place in a different galaxy.

For a trilogy with connected story arcs… hmm, I’d suggest the Metro trilogy, or Half-Life, Half-Life 2: Episode One, and Half-Life 2: Episode Two—if those count as a trilogy :3

It's not, Stalker 2 plays in the same universe but isn't connected to the original trilogy story wise. The more I play Stalker 2 the more I think you're better off playing a mod of the originals like Gamma or Anomaly.
My overall positive review of Stalker 2 is certainly influenced by the fact I got it for free due to an anomaly :)

The Rocksteady Batman Trilogy: Arkham Asylum, Arkham City and Arkham Knight.
Sure, there was a prequel (Arkham Origins) and a semi-sequel (Gotham Knights), but since they were both made by a distinct studio and did not feature Kevin Conroy's iconic voice as Batman/Bruce Wayne, I don't count them as part of the core trilogy.

Starcraft
Broodwar
Starcraft 2 parts 1, 2, and 3

Yeah it's a messy trilogy, because what was supposed to be the conclusion of the trilogy, got heavily expanded and became SC2.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I have never seen the opinion that StarCraft is a trilogy, just as I have never seen the opinion that StarCraft 1 and Broodwar are a duology. Overall, I see the logic here.
However, with this approach, we could consider the series a PENTAlogy, since all three StarCraft 2 campaigns were released as independent sequels and, at the time of release, could be purchased and played even separately from each other.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well each Starcraft expansion was supposed to separately theme and expound upon each of the 3 races, protoss, zerg, and human.

But there was some overlap between the final expansion and Starcraft 2, so i'm assuming someone had the brilliant idea, to just dovetail it all into SC2, and be way ahead of any deadline for making the first expansion for SC2.

But you're right, it's not technically the part 3 we'd been looking forward to after Broodwar.
Just where the spirit of part 3 went, and what they could afford to develop and produce afterwards before interest got watered down.

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, of course, this series is full of sequels, prequels, and spin-offs, but at the same time, this trilogy can be considered as a completed work in its own right: first three original Resident Evil games. You never can't go wrong with this one.

1) Now that Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 and 2 are remastered, I recommend them both, along with Legacy of Kain: Defiance.
Afterwards you can grab Blood Omen 2 for some more fun. Not part of the trilogy but adds some more depth to the story.

2) Dead Space 1, 2 and 3. Many hate on 3 but its great imo.
3) Max Payne Trilogy
4) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 1, 2 and 3. The original Soap trilogy is still the pinnacle of the series.
5) Lastly if you don't mind older games. The Hitman Trilogy. You can skip Codename 47 as it may require some getting into and Hitman: Contracts remasters a lot of the levels. So play Silent Assassin, Contracts and Blood Money

I assume shipping to Canada will be around $20-$30 for each item. That would likely be just for the jewel cases. The small cardboard boxes or the big versions will run a lot more especially sealed new. Out of production for over 20 years a lot of things happened to them, trashed, boxes thrown away to minimize space, and then eventually cd's lost, broken, left in the sun, etc.

Yeah, there's a lot of Tomb Raider games and I think many skipped the second era, it didn't help that when they rebooted the series for the second time LAU Lara got relegated to spin-offs so half of the games in that continuity aren't even called Tomb Raider and instead titled Lara Croft.
Looking forward to how on earth they're gonna merge all three continuities into one with the two new games since they announced they were unifying everything, all three Laras have conflicting backstories and to some extent different personalities.

How about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series — the original one, not the remastered version.
And even though it’s already been mentioned a few times, I’ll add it too: the Assassin’s Creed Ezio Trilogy (my all-time favorite).

I’d also mention the Metro, Mafia and Life is Strange games.
edit: maybe Kingdom Come: Deliverance I & II (it’s not a trilogy, but it still deserves to be mentioned)

Mortal Kombat has a pretty in-depth story, but it's so confusing that most players have no clue of what's going on, kind of a common issue with fighting games in general where they go balls to walls with dozens of characters with intertwined plots, but MK is particularly indulgent in general weirdness with the fact that characters can die and be brought back from the death, various parallel dimensions, a bunch of gods, and reboots that are actually time travel or something like that. Let's say that it makes me appreciate the fact that other fighting game series had the common sense to break their plots into sagas or separate continuities when things got too complicated, kinda like how SNK kept Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting separate from the King of Fighters continuity so they could rearrange the timeline so the characters' ages can make sense, and for Geese Howard to not be dead.

I mean, if you bring up Mortal Kombat, do we also include the Tekken series? That has continuing story between the games. So twisted up. But I enjoyed the story gleaned from intro and endings between 1 and 2. I don't recall clearly enough for 3, 4 and...uh...tag? 5? But then it's on 8 or something so...trilogy gone mad with resurrection! The story-so-far on the trailers for the last I saw were so confusing.
