The games don't sharpen the brain you know ...

Life isn't that black and white. You don't have to always stay with your friends, nor go home straight away every day.
If you find their points of discussion not important, start speaking about things you do find important. By doing so you
will eventually find out if these friends are people you want to stay in your life, or not. You can not know what will happen
in the future, but do enjoy your time and moments with people you like while you can. Some games can keep your brain sharp,
most don't. Good conversation will do a lot more for you then games. Live now, not yesterday or tomorrow.

If you want to just go home and game it up, do that. If you want to stay a little longer and chat with friends about an interesting topic you are into, do that. Just make sure you always do what you want to do and make sure you don't completely neglect your friends either of course, assuming they care about those kinds of things at all.

But why does it have to be only these options, and only one of them ?
Stay and hang out with others one day, go play games the next day, attend a meeting of student council in the evening.
I personally love to mix things up. Well, I do live in dorms so hanging around with my buddies is somewhat parallel to playing some games, but dont give games too much of credit. They dont sharpen your mind or help you with your studies. They take up your time, that at college should be precious.
Also, if people at college arent your friends, no need to mask it up and pretend they are. Due to course changes everyone I got to know over 2 years are now in other group, I consider only 2 or 3 persons friends in my group. Others are acquaintances I "work" with together. I talk to them, but mostly trivial small talk just as an acquaintance would do.

Yes, you will probably lose contact with 99% of the people you know in college. But that doesn't mean it's a waste to socialize, especially compared to playing games alone in your room.

Ultimately, after college comes 40+ years of work, and you'll probably miss some of the aspects of college. So, yes, do your homework and prepare for the future with a good education in something you like that is employable, but don't forget to have some fun. It's much easier to find and spend time with people who have similar interests while at college. You'll learn more than just what is taught in the classrooms.
