How did that happen. o_o
Always best to just put games on d:\ and steam itself on c:\ whenever you reinstall windows or put back a backup, copy your c:\users (for your savegames) to a temp disk and after your backup, place that back. You won't even lose your games (and your savegames, unless it saves in windows registry like Pony Island :x) because they stay on d:\ and will always be picked up.
You should also just be able to copy any game installation folder in the steam common directory and be picked up by steam (tried it myself).

I know... I was just... distracted... many problems hit me this week and steam started acting on top of that, solutions I found online didn't work and... I mean, I could have just cut/paste steamapps outside of steam folder but no... didn't even think of that...

I'll need to be sure to back up stuff soon myself, though for one of my consoles. Going to a bigger memory card in my PS TV, no way do I want to lose my 30 hours of progress in Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth, never mind the two other games I could fit on my small memory card. :P

Oh, well, you didn't need to uninstall Steam. What Valve themselves recommend when there are problems with the Steam client is to delete everything from the Steam installation folder except for Steam.exe and steamapps folder (to keep your games if you used the default folder for them). Keeping userdata folder will also keep your screenshots, and keeping the music folder will keep your music database. Steam.exe will redownload and restore everything else automatically.

Here's to hoping that everything will work out for you in the future!

Haha, yep, been there. Luckily I have fast internet. Got most of the games back in a night sleep
Whats worse, I lost my savegames. Some great games I havent played since because I dont want to do stuff twice for multiple hours. (The abc murders come to mind).

I have "up to" 10 mb/s download, which is around 8 in reality. It's not ideal, but it's okay. Honestly, I'm not even that shaken, it's gonna download again, I kind of found it funny that it could happen to me after all this time of using steam and then... not thinking ahead for a second and clicking the button.

I always try to keep the minimum amount of installed games on my drive (SSD is happier the less it's filled). Good job on getting a clean drive like mine ;)

It's not much help now, but if you have the resources: https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2017/01/building-a-local-steam-caching-server-to-ease-the-bandwidth-blues/

Reinstalled system, tried using old steam installation (always worked before), had problem with windows service, realized not one game asked to update in 3 days... decided to uninstall steam and install it again... thought it would ask me about games folder, it didn't, now removing 700+ Gb of installed games... :(((
When I think of installing witcher 3, gta5, skyrim enhanced or doom again.... man... it's gonna take A LOT of time.
On a positive side... I'll try installing steam on my new ssd and then put games folder where it used to be on a dedicated hdd so steam and games are not in the same place, just for futureproofing.
here's a giveaway for those who are looking for it: https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/8gupx/
