I got a trade offer from someone with +172 / -0 Trade Feedback. He has a key and wants me to go first. Should I?

Reliability does not prevent you from getting scammed.
Even if you -rep the guy, 1 hit is nothing compared to the 172 positives.
If you don't feel comfortable with the trade, don't go through with it.

+1 Also people impersonate users with good rep and/or fake rep.

This can't be stated enough. That's the most common "exploit" when it comes to SteamTrades feedback - people not checking that they are dealing with the correct person. Just because someone sends you to a link that shows 100+ positive feedback doesn't mean they are the person you're dealing with.

Double check all URLs before trading!

You have a point but is the Trade Feedback exploitable? Is there any way someone can get red of a negative feedback?

Nope he cant get rid of neg feedback, otherwise everyone would be scammers with only positives :D

On SG? Assuming the -rep is undeserved and you have proof, you can ask the support to remove it.

Yes and yes. The first yes I explained in my other comment. The second, it's possible to eliminate -rep, but it needs to be done by a moderator, and needs to be examinated first. Me for e.g. had a -rep from a scammer. Since that scammer was more than proofed that he was a scammer, they removed it.

You shouldn't trust someone just based on feedback from people you don't know. If he decided to scam you for example, then suddenly you have this "reputable" person's word against your non-reputable word.

Trust people who you can trust and don't trust people whom you can't. If you don't feel comfortable, don't do it. If they're a pushy asshole (like most high reppers are), don't do it. If you don't know or trust anyone who gave that person reps, don't do it. It's really that simple. You not having any rep doesn't mean that you have to listen to other people tell you what you should do just because of their arbitrary trading rules.

There is no rule to trading except the way that both people happily exchange their items to each other successfully. That's it.

Just to have an acount in SG, you need 100$ worth account. Who would create 100 accounts and spend money in them just to exploit the trade feedback? Yet nothing garantees you he's not going to scam you ;)
But +100 usually are trustable.

There is Facebook / Twitter / Youtube accounts on which 'user' can create Giveaway where entry can be +rep on his profile ;)
So dont need to create 100 accounts.

If all the +rep for a user are within a day or so of each other, consider that as a very suspicious sign. Hundreds of +rep should normally cover a span of a few months to have some semblance of reliability..

Yep there is always some tricky situations, as you mentioned, but still its possible to fake it in one or another way :)

Oh yes... I didn't think about that. It's very possible, yet unlikely, I think. I've never seen one as far as I remember.

It's not that hard to get a 100$ worth account. Just buy one 1$ pre-order bundle on groupees and you will have your 100$ worth account. So that is saying absolutely nothing!

Bundled games aren't counted during registration. It has to be $100 worth of unbundled games.

That sounds strange as 95% of my own games are bundled games. Maybe even more, never had a problem though.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter + Fahrenheit + Skyrim + Back to the Future + Contrast + LEGO Hobbit, that's already over $100

Except for Ethan Carter all bought in the last few weeks. I'm not arguing with you, I guess I've just been lucky when I started here.

Could be that it was different when you registered. I seem to remember that bundled games used to count for 15% of their value during registration, similarly to giveaways, but the FAQ says that they don't count at all.
Maybe I just remember wrongly, I don't know.

It's somewhat reliable. It's a good indicator of past behavior for the user, but it's no guarantee.

Also, make sure you're dealing with the right person by clicking the link on his profile page. So many times, people have made fake accounts using the same name & picture as a reputable trader, in order to scam others.

Make sure that you're trading with the right person, and not just an impersonator. It's very easy to just change your name and avatar on Steam to look like a known trader.

I don't see this offer in your trade post.
Did that person added you and made that offer in the Steam chat ? If yes, you might be dealing with an impersonator.

I was thinking the same thing. Especially since no one in his friend list has a high rep here.

If the trade seems logical to you and person has a high +rep then yeah, it's reliable.

As you have none references yourself I would have asked you to go first as well. Only logical.

Everything matters, from the general image, profile, the game he/she offer for yours, negative reps here (even one negative rep can call a truth of the personality of a trader), steamrep.com. Also install EnchancedSteam addon for google chrome to help you indentify easier if its the original trader or impersonator and for some useful tools for everyday steam use.
As a new in trading its recommended to not trade for a game key, its always better and recommended to trade gift with gift or tf2/csgo keys, i never traded for a high value key because i can't prove if its used or not, the 99% of the high positive users are safe but shit happens sometimes like an unused key though for a game but in reality was used/traded/gifted by mistake.

  • My opinion in trading :)

Visit the user's SG profile, from there go to his steam profile. If it is the same guy, he should be in your friends list and is not an impersonator. If the guy is legit, the risk is still on your side as you will have to go first unless you guys use the steam trade window.

I'm not sure what key you are being offered (tf2/cd go key, or game key?) but if the offer is legit...

Before I started trading for more expensive stuff, I traded mostly cheap ass bundle games. It helps to get to know SG trading business and you learn the tricks/ traps.

First thing to do is be ABSOLUTELY 100% SURE that the SG profile of the trader is indeed their profile. Click the button to view the user's Steam profile to make sure it is the same user (read the profile URL; Is it the same as the trader who made you the offer?).

If that has been taken care of, you are probably safe to trade.

If you have steamenhanced click on the steamgifts link in the user profile so you know for certain that it's who he claims.

Or check yourself by going to http://www.steamgifts.com/go/user/XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX where the xs are the steam id not the name.
